To think that refering to a baby's age in weeks (once the baby is older than a month) is unnecessary.

I am often confused when people refer to their baby's age in weeks. A friend posted on facebook "Wow my ds is 27 weeks! Time is going so fast!" I recently asked a lady on the bus how old her dd was and she said "13 weeks."

Given that babies born at 37 weeks and those born at 42 weeks are all considered full term it seems pedantic to state a baby's age in weeks.

AIBU to think that once your baby is over 1 month old you can start refering to their age in months even if you say "3 and a half months" or "nearly 2 months." Is there a reason why the exact age in weeks is important? Maybe it is just me and my bad maths skills that stuggle to work out how old the baby actually is.

I don't give a shit whether people use weeks or months. I can divide by 4 or 12 accordingly and quickly in my head.

A month does not equal exactly 4 weeks though. I think you need to be more precise with your maths sanctimommy. Otherwise you will end up behind.

I'm guilty of this, my pfb will be 24 weeks tomorrow and I'm still saying it in weeks.

Sooo annoying to hear about peoples' 32 week old babies or their 27 month old toddlers. I'm with Sanctimummy on the whole mental arithmetic thing though, I can figure it out, just think it's a bit OTT.
While we're at it I also dislike the 2.5, if you mean the child is 2 years and 5 months they are not 2.5...2.5 is 2 years and 6 months. Sorry but with the generally poor maths standards nowadays this bugs me (although I can see the flawed reasoning).

Don't really understand why people find this annoying. I've just stopped using weeks now at 5 months but other mum's can do as they please.

EYFS profile assessment uses months up to 60!

So many people count 1 month as = 4 weeks which is VERY WRONG. So think OP might be onto something. Approximate months good enough.

Yanbu. The annoying woman from playgroup has a 32 week old. Shit knows how old it actually is. Agree with the people saying swap over by 3 months.

I think I used weeks for quite a while, up until 6 months maybe. We had a lot of invovment with paeds though and they always go by weeks.

I agree I talked in weeks to others with similar age babies but months to others. I have a bizarrely weird memory for number so knew both my ds's ages in weeks for quite a while.

I'm a childminder so used to talking in months for children upto 5years because of using EYFS.

HVs and Doctors always used weeks until they are 1 so I used weeks too.

Not sure why anyone would get het up over it.

Babies in weeks doesn't really bother me although I tended to refer to mine in months after about 3 months.

All this my toddler is 37 months business is ridiculous.

I have a 7 week old - (I only know this because my mother pointed it out). At this age 4 weeks to 8 weeks is a huge jump so saying she's a month old just feels inaccurate. But I agree in general, weeks til 3 months or so.

And referring to your child in months past 2 gets me totally lost. I have a 2 1/2 year old, why on earth I'd say he is 30 months I have no idea (I just had to work that out).

One thin that always confuses me is that as others have said, there aren't 4 weeks per month. So my DS2 was 40 weeks at the end of July, but not 10 months (on a calendar) until over 3 weeks later. Which is right.

I usually use weeks to 12-16 weeks then months after that until 1 year. After that I'm lucky to match the right DC to the right age (very sleep deprived for 6 years).

One thing drives me nuts is when some refer to 4.11 year old. Took me ages to realise they meant 4 years 11 months.

people actually ask how many weeks my ds is but I do sometimes say months, he was 2 months on monday, 9 weeks yesterday. I prefer asking when they were born but like a pp I dont tend to have problems with mental arithmetic

I referred to DS's age in weeks until about 4 months, then used months. In fairness though, I would probably have used weeks for longer if he hasn't gone through the 4 month sleep regression, when I could barely remember my own age, let alone his! Now he's turned 2 I'll be using years rather than months (he's still my baby though!).

I would use weeks up to maybe 3 or 4 mths then months until about 18mths, , after that its years. I think people who still use months for toddlers are desperately trying to cling onto babyhood!

Weeks until 26wks/ 6m. Half a month or so can make a big difference in baby's development.

DS1 is in a combination of 1 1/2- 2 yr and 2-3y clothes. The mix of labelling in different shops by year or months is annoying. I don't particularly care which is used, just be consistent.
