Babygrows aren't pyjamas!

... so are fine to be worn during the day!

Two-piece "outfits" just look so uncomfortable on a newborn. Waistbands? Elastic? They have no waist! They ride up and I find babies awkward to handle in "proper clothes."

I recall ex-SIL pointed out a 'dressed' baby at a party, in jeans and trainers (2 months old) and went on and on that I'd brought mine out in PJs.

DM made similar comment today about my youngest. She's not even three weeks! What's wrong with vests and rompers until they at least have a waist?!

Re hindering crawling... when DS put his leg in forward bend position the knee would go higher inside the suit than intended, so when he moved and his leg went into the long stretch position the fabric was in the wrong place and didn't have enough give. He'd trip up and head butt the floor. Also we have laminate wood flooring and his little legs would slide out from under him (no grip dots on the knees). Bare leg offers much better resistance.

Haha ds gets changed into a fresh babygro in the morning to help him understand the difference between day and night. Babies have absolutely no understanding of what they are wearing so as long as he is changing into something new and clean whether it is 'real' clothes or a sleepsuit makes no difference to baby, just the parents!
I made a point of asking for sleepsuits for ds instead of 'real' clothes as gifts as I've always hated the limited choice for boys. He has some fantastic funky coloured ones. When we go out we only get positive comments (if any) that people are glad to see him dressed like a baby and not a mini adult.
He has a few pairs of shorts and light sweatpants that he wears if it's warm.
I can't say I've ever cared what other children wear, I just know that as soon as I come home anything restrictive (bra, knickers, jeans) gets swapped for something more pliable, so I assume my ds will have inherited this little oddity.

hghkjh · 19/08/2013 03:24

But what about the bloody poppers? I always do them up wrong and find it a faff to try and get all that material out of the way when nappy changing. A vest, trousers and long sleeved top, all in v soft material and not restrictive/tight in any way I find much more practical. It's easier to strip off/layer up in response to changes in outside temp too. I do think babygros look v cute but just find them a hassle tbh.

StuckOnARollercoaster · 19/08/2013 05:13

My DD was born in the heatwave. I had prepared only vests and babygros, but I was bought some lovely dresses and rompers which were perfect for the hot weather and very comfy to wear and change.
The 'yorkshire lass' inside me wants to get some use out of the clothes I've been given and she looks as cute in the outfits as she does in her babygros.
Oh and most of the outfits seem very comfy, the only dress that doesn't is the only one that hasn't been worn. The 'jeans' that she has are actually a soft legging that are very comfy.

Longdistance · 19/08/2013 05:25

My dd's were in baby gro's til 6 months.

They do look so comfy, and cute in them.

But, I agree, jeans look uncomfortable for them when they're tiny. Dresses, leggings and t shirts are fine, but scratchy denim is just awful.

Sorry!

MisselthwaiteManor · 19/08/2013 06:37

I put my baby 2 months old in babygrows as much as possible, for my own benefit as much as hers, she's so adorable and snuggley in them. I will really miss this cuddly stage when she's bigger and in normal clothes. Why rush it?

I do put her in a dress if we go out and it's too hot for an all-in-one but I want her covered from the sun. She looks odd but cute.

CreatureRetorts · 19/08/2013 06:38

YANBU

Babygros night and day until they start crawling/cruising.

BlackholesAndRevelations · 19/08/2013 07:17

Rompers are great too!

EmilyAlice · 19/08/2013 07:23

YANBU. I only had babygros for my second baby as they hadn't been invented when the first was born; he was in flannel nightie with hand-knitted bootees and cardigan. We were so happy when the first babygros appeared.

doingmyhead · 19/08/2013 12:37

I am with OP, I cannot abide seeing mini adults, when they are babies! My DS always said I dressed mine old fashioned, they were in babygros and cardigans or romper suits!

Small babies in jeans and trainers and waistcoats etc! Yuck!

softlysoftly · 19/08/2013 12:44

DD2 is just out of babygrows (walking 14 months) though still has rompers, they are perfect, baby jeans are evil.

Someone mentioned white terry towelling babygrows and now...

I NEED ANOTHER BAYBEEEEEEE Envy

zoobaby · 19/08/2013 13:00

As for poppers... umm... DS' arms and chest always stayed inside the suit and once legs are covered up, just start from the bottom. The crotch is the trickiest as this is where the poppers change direction, but you don't even notice cos it's just the next one along.

FrussoHathor · 19/08/2013 13:01

Dd1 had outfits for day and babygros for pjs only.
Dd2 had outfits for baby groups, and babygros for the rest of the time.
See where I'm heading with this Wink
Ds1 usually to be found in a babygros or a romper or pjs. (I think I'm trying to keep him babyfied as long as possible. And he's so snugly and cuddly in gros.

cory · 19/08/2013 13:01

A century ago all babies, of either sex, would have worn long gowns until they were a few months old and then short dresses. Same night and day. So presumably all the children of that generation will have grown up incapable not only of distingushing between night and day but also between male and female. Hmm

ipswichwitch · 19/08/2013 13:03

jammiedonut, DS is 22 months and as soon as he gets home strips off his clothes and runs about the house in his nappy til bath time! I've always had a habit of taking my trousers off when I come home too Grin
He was in sleep suits til about 6 months - we did have nighttime ones and kept the nice ones for daytime. From 6 months he was either in sleep suits or jersey tops and joggers as his legs are a little short (something else he gets from me!) so many sleep suits had legs that were far too long for him!

bronya · 19/08/2013 13:13

I used 'clothes' during the day and babygros at night. Worked for us as I'm outside a lot and needed warm clothes (DS winter born). They were v useful for layering during the day though, as socks didn't stay on too well. In the coldest weather had vest, babygro, trousers (double lined), thick jumper with hood (hats fall off), then one of those outdoor fluffy all in ones on top, a blanket and the raincover on the buggy. That was just about warm enough for the 2-3 hours outside. Obviously stripped off indoors!

goldenlula · 19/08/2013 14:11

Mine wore the poppered baby grows for sleep time and soft dungarees or romper suits or soft trouser and top combinations. Dd wore soft dresses or leggings and top or romper suits. Ds1 was gifted a pair of proper hard denim jeans in 0-3 months. He never wore them!

chocoluvva · 19/08/2013 15:01

My friend and I treated our babies to very cute Christmassy babygros when our babies were nine months old. And DS wore his big sister's old pink babygros.especially when we were visiting MIL

LimitedEditionLady · 19/08/2013 15:15

Mine wore babygrows and real clothes.Dont think babygrows are pyjamas, they have gorgeous ones.i liked the real clothes too.

Pigsmummy · 19/08/2013 20:48

My DD has a hernia so it's dresses or sleep suits, I now refer to them as oneses. She is 10 mo and can't see me changing my baby stylist anytime soon.

IfIonlyhadsomesleep · 19/08/2013 20:53

Babygrow and cardigan = outfit until at least six months. I regret the time my dd1 spent in outfits tbh. Dd2 spent her first couple of months in underwear I guess-she was a summer baby and it was mostly too got for a babygrow!

IfIonlyhadsomesleep · 19/08/2013 20:55

Erm...it would be wrong to have another baby simply to have another few months of babygrow time, wouldn't it? Wink

MrsOakenshield · 19/08/2013 20:56

DD was winter born and she was in vests (long-sleeved, short-sleeved or sleeveless as weather dictated) and babygrows (and cardies/tights if really cold) until she could sit up unaided (around 4/5 months) and really until she crawled. Dresses on a non-walking child seem utterly pointless, so her first clothes were leggings and such-like. I think her first dress was the one she wore to our wedding when she was 16 months (so walking for 2 months by then)!

Nombrechanger · 19/08/2013 20:59

Mine were in babygros until they were about 7 or 8 months old!
I didn't realise people thought they were sleepwear. Even if it was considered for indoors only, I don't give a flying fuck.

My boys were lovely and comfy!

peanutMD · 19/08/2013 21:06

My first was in clothes from pretty much newborn to help him distinguish day from night and because I couldn't take him out in his PJ's. He had cute hoodies, Jeans, joggers, tshirts the lot...

I was seriously brain washed my mums advice Anne what a load of shite it was!!

My DD (now 5 months) wore babygrows day and night until 3 months and since then we have thrown on the odd pair of soft leggings and cotton dressespureply because its been roasting and we have a ton of unused clothes.

Babygrows still win for me though :)
