Babygrows aren't pyjamas!

... so are fine to be worn during the day!

Two-piece "outfits" just look so uncomfortable on a newborn. Waistbands? Elastic? They have no waist! They ride up and I find babies awkward to handle in "proper clothes."

I recall ex-SIL pointed out a 'dressed' baby at a party, in jeans and trainers (2 months old) and went on and on that I'd brought mine out in PJs.

DM made similar comment today about my youngest. She's not even three weeks! What's wrong with vests and rompers until they at least have a waist?!

To those of you who said babygros hindered crawling, how does it? This is a genuine question as i want to dress ds (5months) in babygros as long as possible.

iamadoozermum · 18/08/2013 21:58

I had been thinking that I was obviously a slovenly mummy by dressing my DCs in babygrows until they were walking. They do wear other clothes too but I'd often just have them in their babygrows whilst all the other babies at groups were fully dressed. Glad to find out it's not just me Smile.

morethanpotatoprints · 18/08/2013 22:00

YANBU and I'd tell them to mind their own....

Mine were in them for as long as possible both day and night.
I can remember buying tops and bottoms for ds1 when he was around 6 months old. Most presents were babygro's too.
They are far more practical and in the early weeks/months this is what matters. Mine are 22 18 and 9 now and it didn't do them any harm. Grin

smokinaces · 18/08/2013 22:00

Yanbu to put your baby in what you want.

Mine both wore outfits in the day (tshirt and trousers or dungarees) from a very early age, days old. Two reasons, one wad I prefered them in outfits, and the second I have fibro and hms and babygrows I struggled with a lot with the poppers. They were both in pjs at night from three months latest.

FloweryOwl · 18/08/2013 22:03

My 6 month old wears babygros all the time, he always seems happiest in them. if were going somewhere other than the shops or a relatives house I'll put him in a comfy outfit. I don't like seeing small babies in trainers and shoes I always feel sorry for their little growing feet. I only put my two in socks or soft slippers or barefoot until they were starting to walk. I don't like tights on them either, they look so uncomfortable.

NeoMaxiZoomDweebie · 18/08/2013 22:05

Ah OP you're full of it. Baby's look undressed when taken out in babygrows. You can buy PERFECTLY comfy "Outfits" for babies which don't ride up or reveal their body.

You put a vest on them which buttons underneath and some little footed leggings and a cardigan. My DDs both wore soft romper style dungarees too....with a vest...no midriff on show. Sometimes GASP they wore DRESSES too! They were fine and always looked nice.

NeoMaxiZoomDweebie · 18/08/2013 22:06

I never found a gro hindered crawling but they did come undone somewhat...and my DDs ended up unbuttoned and crawling like that.

I don't think they do hinder crawling. Both mine were crawling at 5 months and 6 months. My eldest was walking at just turned 9 months and she was always in a babygro!Just get the ones with the grips on the feet :D

Both of my DC wore clothes from day two. I liked to distinguish day from night.
I loved seeing my babies in baby grows at bed time, but preferred to see them dressed in proper clothing after their morning feed.

I don't pay too much attention to what others do with regards to dressing their babies. Their baby, their choice. As long as baby is warm enough and comfortable does it really matter?

catkind · 18/08/2013 22:19

Mine always ended up tied in knots in babygros. Before they were crawling even. Think it's because they both had very short legs compared to their bodies so the babygros just didn't fit right. Also I didn't really like having their feet enclosed in the daytime, they loved investigating their toes. And specially in summer babygros just seemed too hot in the daytime. DS spent his first few weeks mostly wearing just a vest, it was a heatwave.

I didn't feel they were particularly not dressed in babygros, but they weren't our favourite everyday wear or even our favourite nightwear once they were crawling.
And all those poppers! Much easier to slip soft trousers on and off for nappy changes. They only wore vests cos they seemed to help keep the nappy in place properly.

FirstStopCafe · 18/08/2013 22:23

YANBU. I dress my 5 month old in babygros a lot. He looks so comfy. He does wear other clothes as well simply because we were given them, but babygros are my preference

FennCara · 18/08/2013 22:25

NeoMaxi actually dresses are ok, great in hot weather!

There is nothing more stupid than a dress for a crawling baby.

Ooh, not read all the pages (sorry!) but I'm so with ya!
Why on earth would you put tiny newborns in jeans and trainers or whatever?!
Vests with poppers and babygrows are the way to go!
Why do tiny babies even NEED trainers at that age anyway?! They don't. The longer they can go without 'proper' shoes, the better!
Jeans and trainers just look uncomfortable on small babies. Get them in so called sleepsuits!

pigletmania · 18/08/2013 22:34

I could never get my head around poppers, ds 18 months, worse joggers and tops instead from an early age, dd 6 lived in baby grows until about 6/7 months old. Ds was growing so much I gave up, tops and jiggers lasted longer

TooTabooToBoo · 18/08/2013 22:55

DS is 5 months but huge, he wears 9-12 months clothes.

I prefer to put him in babygrows, in fact he wore one to church this morning.

His aunt bought him jeans on 2 occasions, both were rigid style (proper denim), the first pair were newborn skinny jeans from Next, they never got over his thighs! His second pair are slightly softer, but again his thighs were not made for jeans! Grin

I think we are getting to the stage were babygrows will become nightwear and I will have to start dressing him properly, although soft jogging pants and t-shirts or courdroy dungarees will be my choice.

With DD, I dressed her."properly" from the start, babygrows were solely for night time.

I couldn't really give a.flying fuck what others chose to do with their baby.

WafflyVersatile · 18/08/2013 22:58

Anything more than practical baby clothes eg babygrows are about what adults want to see babies look cute in not about baby comfort.

YANBU

thebody · 18/08/2013 23:00

there is nothing on this Earth more fabbi than cuddling a newly bathed sweet smelling baby in a soft babygro.

making my boobs tingle as I write and my milky bar closed 11 years ago (tmi)

tell your sil to do one silly cow.

mrsyattering · 18/08/2013 23:06

Baby grows or onesies are all newborns should be in. I hate seeing tiny babies "dressed" till they are crawling at least

mumofweeboys · 18/08/2013 23:14

My first lived in baby grows until about 8 months as he was a winter baby and I always had him in a snow suit. My next two I tended to keep in baby grows or those vest with the little legs as they were summer babies.

ReallyTired · 18/08/2013 23:14

I think if I was taking a baby to a party then I would make a little more effort than to take them in a babygrow. There are lots of pretty outfits for newborn babies which are comfortable. A little girl can be put in a nice dress which makes nappy changes easier and doesn't rub the cord.

However for normal days there is nothing wrong with a babygrow. A new born baby spends most of its life asleep so it does make sense for them to live in a sleepsuit.

I suppose its each to their own. With my children I chose to dress them in proper clothes quite early on. Ds had awful reflux so threw up all over his babies clothes about 4 times a day. With dd she was born in a heat wave and found the babygrow too hot.

Retroformica · 18/08/2013 23:41

Jeans for a tiny baby? Ridiculous!!!

Baby grows are perfectly acceptable day wear. My friends kids wore them up to about 5 or 6 months. We went a bit longer as my DS looked so young.
