So my quiet town had a visit from our traveller 'friends' this week and

They wonder why people are so against them setting up camp where ever they please.

They arrived last Wednesday on a football field with a park and caused a whole load of trouble, for example, going to the petrol station handing over euros, being told they won't accept euros as payment, they simple got in their vans and drove of.

Made a visit to our local Sainsburys got caught shoplifting, were locked in until police were called.

Local children playing on park got beaten up with sticks by the traveller children.

And to top it all of 3 vans pulling up outside a local pub, very busy, dropping their trousers and all three disgusting men casually took a shit one by one on the pub doorstep. Got in there vans and drove of.

Then left the football field and park in an absolute mess. Rubbish everywhere.

Each incident police were called but nothing has been done.

So AIBU to wonder why travellers think this behavior is acceptable? and why can't anything be done to stop it?

Both are covered by the same law. And my earlier point stands.

BoneyBackJefferson · 18/08/2013 15:48

skyler

unless the 2013 act has closed the "loophole" that allows motor salvage operators to pay cash, they are still allowed to do so.

skylerwhite · 18/08/2013 15:58

Boney motor salvage dealers are included in the new act.

BoneyBackJefferson · 18/08/2013 16:04

It will be interesting to see then how it affects the motor salvage operators that are online :)

Retropear · 18/08/2013 16:13

Maristella I think you've been reading the wrong thread so if you don't mind I'll ignore your rather over dramatic post.

The patronising generalising "all travellers keep immaculate caravans" comment which always cross up on the these threads is in the same vein as "all Indians eat curry".

Retropear · 18/08/2013 16:13

Just sayin.

IneedAsockamnesty · 18/08/2013 16:34

Retro, its no different to you continuing to state or imply that all travellers are tax dodging benefit defrauding criminals who are a drain on the gov.

Fwiw. Rates of benefit fraud are quite low in most traveller camps and the ones who do they tend to get cought quicker than settled people due to the raids so the a punt lost is less than in settled comunities.

Loads of travellers are tax payers many pay HRT many are also law abiding employers.

If anybody drives without insurance and gets cought there car gets impounded travellers are not exempt.

It sounds very much like you have a bit of a bee in your bonnet and it makes you sound a bit uninformed.

Retropear · 18/08/2013 16:38

Think you need to read posts properly.

IneedAsockamnesty · 18/08/2013 16:51

Why, you have made several posts about not paying tax's and being beyond the radar of the law.

Retropear · 18/08/2013 16:59

I'm quoting facts.

People that move a lot can fly below the radar far more easily(fact)and the issue re travellers near us is they don't want to pay council tax(fact).

Feenie · 18/08/2013 17:06

and the issue re travellers near us is they don't want to pay council tax(fact).

Fact? Confused

You are clearly ignorant as to the difference between fact and opinion.

IneedAsockamnesty · 18/08/2013 17:07

Its not a fact,it may be a fact that some don't its not a fact that all don't pay.

People who move a lot but receive benefits find it quite hard to fly under the radar given that the dwp cooperates in trace and tracking and arrest facilitation.

Retropear · 18/08/2013 17:09
Grin

Errr no.Permanent settlement plan on beauty spot has been canned because said travellers didn't want to pay council tax when it was finished.

Fact

Retropear · 18/08/2013 17:16

Any traveller on an illegal site does not pay council tax- locals many of whom are seeing services cut obviously do and fund any clear up operations after.Fair?I don't think so.

skylerwhite · 18/08/2013 17:16

Is this in southwest England, Retropear?

Al0uise · 18/08/2013 17:19

I'm seriously smirking now. MUMSNET - Defending the indefensible beyond logic since time immemorial.

Naughty people are not bad, merely disenfranchised.

Righto

IneedAsockamnesty · 18/08/2013 17:19

CT usually gets lumped into site fees.

Al0uise · 18/08/2013 17:20

It bloody well doesn't. Council Tax is paid per registered dwelling, not land mass!

Retropear · 18/08/2013 17:21

Not if they camp illegally.

alemci · 18/08/2013 17:21

do you mean haldon near Exeter Retro?

IneedAsockamnesty · 18/08/2013 17:23

AL formal long term sites have dwellings on them.

Al0uise · 18/08/2013 17:27

Long term = CT per dwelling.

Not site.

Al0uise · 18/08/2013 17:27

Short term = Nil Nada Zip Zilch

IneedAsockamnesty · 18/08/2013 17:31

And your point is?

Quaffle · 18/08/2013 17:33

My DH works on a retail park and a load of these people set up camp overnight.

For 24 hours they created havoc.

Strolled into shops and calmly and matter of factly announced they'd be helping themselves to whatever they fancied, and that it would really be better and far less painful for the staff not to get in their way.

The (barefoot, feral) kids invaded the bike shop and helped themselves. Had a wonderful time racing round the car park.

When they'd finished with the bikes they moved on to to the furniture store which apparently made a perfectly acceptable alternative adventure playground.

I'm sure they're the minority and that most travellers/gypsies/whatever the properly respectful term for them is are absolutely charming.

This lot were utter scum.
