Here's an extract of the lyrics if you are lucky enough to have not been subjected to them...

Baby, it's in your nature
Just let me liberate you
You don't need no papers
That man is not your maker
And that's why I'm gon' take a
Good girl
I know you want it
I know you want it
I know you want it
You're a good girl

I'll give you something big enough to tear your ass in two

Nothin' like your last guy, he too square for you
He don't smack that ass and pull your hair like that
So I'm just watching and waitin'
For you to salute the true big pimpin'

Do it like it hurt, like it hurt
What you don't like work

I know it's a bit old now... But it still makes me so Angry

ExcuseTypos that's a valid observation, I really don't know what going on. A friend told me about the video, I watched it, I have never seen anything like it. I don't watch music channels so the last video I seen was probably from the late 90's...

Hardertokidnap it's the references like ''I know you want it'' - this is a typical defence used by rapists. Also, ''do it like it hurt'' and ''tear your ass in two''

HairyGrotter · 15/08/2013 10:09

I'd feel more empowered if I could tear Robin Thicke's ass in two, if I'm honest

Winter123 · 15/08/2013 10:11

HairyGrotter that did make me laugh! Perhaps you should get in the queue that appears to be forming! Grin

Hairy :)

Buttercup4 · 15/08/2013 11:54

I think the 'it's a song' attitude is very dangerous to have. The lyrics in the song are offensive, but I suppose you think that they are 'just words'

It's almost the same as don't worry if DH is EA, at least he isn't actually hitting you.

Stropzilla · 15/08/2013 11:56

Awful, "You're the hottest bitch in this place" and "the way you grab me, must wanna get nasty". Love the tune etc but the words are are just...ew.

Chattymummyhere · 15/08/2013 11:58

It is a horrible song like so many others.. You happily listen then one time you note what the song is actually about and it shocks you..

I remember happily singing songs when I was younger then realising they where about fighting to have hard rampant sex after.. But it was a really upbeat "tune"

My friend who is a teacher bans searches for certain artists when her students have a bit of free time to mess about on computers and she by no means old!

Something needs doing its all a bit like subliminal messages really a song seen as innocent by many actually putting ideas into people's heads

Cakebaker35 · 15/08/2013 12:05

YANBU. Really liked this tune, hummed along in the car, then figured out some of the lyrics Angry So depressing and its a catchy tune now ruined for me.

Alisvolatpropiis · 15/08/2013 12:06

The lyrics aren't exactly charming but I don't see them as describing rape. And he could easily be really talking about his wife.

Sinister can't say I've seen it... Don't think I want to either now!

Chatty so not surprised by your friends diligence in this area, I would be horrified if children saw the uncut version (yes, I realise that does sounds like I'm clutching my pearls at the thought)

StHelenInPerson · 15/08/2013 17:07

Yanbu but I like the tune and never knew/realised what the lyrics meant.
The fact that most mainstream songs are sexist/distasteful and mysogynist has not escaped me though.

I don't listen to top 40 and rarely the radio now a days so don't normally get up up in modern crap music.

Do listen to modern dance music but no lyrics required 90% of the time.

StHelenInPerson · 15/08/2013 17:09

I also would never let my dd watch a music channel or even on in the background just for the dancing that goes on if you can call it that.

gordyslovesheep · 15/08/2013 17:10

And he could easily be really talking about his wife oh lovely - I wonder if he promised to love, honour and tear her ass in two in front of their family and friends Hmm

PrincessFlirtyPants · 15/08/2013 17:17

gordyslovesheep Grin very good response!!

PrincessFlirtyPants · 15/08/2013 17:17

Till death do your arse cheeks part...

SirChenjin · 15/08/2013 17:28

Fucking hell - I had no idea what the lyrics were Angry Sad

Anyone else getting sick and tired of having to turn the radio off all the time in response to this shit that's being churned out? I do not want to listen to songs like this, I do not want my children to listen to them.

Wasapea · 15/08/2013 17:28

This discussion has been had a million times. The lyrics are dreadful. It's still a good song. It's okay to like the song and not like misogyny. Suggesting a petition to ban it from BBC playlists is utterly ridiculous. Where would you draw the line? Hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of songs have lyrics some people find offensive.

mum2bubble · 15/08/2013 17:31

YANBU. Songs like this make me so very, very angry. And as for the video - words fail ... Sad

5madthings · 15/08/2013 17:36

yanbu it is vile and just reinfores a crap culture where women are seen as property to do whatever you want to.

farrowandbawl · 15/08/2013 17:45

It's vile, cheap, crap = instant hit.

Unfortunately, it's so common it's depressing. Yes, sex sells, but it's on fucking everything now in adverts from yoghurts to sofas. It's no bloody wonder women are in a worse position now than 50 years ago. Sex has been cheapened so much there's no..no...I can't even think of the word.

Depressing, depressing, depressing and I'm so bored of it all.

Buttercup4 · 15/08/2013 17:59

Wasapea OP, has already said that they know the song is old and has apologised up thread for it being repeated. No need.

Most people on this thread are offended by its lyrics, if you aren't then that's fine. If people want to protest about a song that belittles women and promotes violent sex then that is their choice.

SirChenjin · 15/08/2013 18:08

I don't agree that women are in a worse position that 50 years ago - I'm in my mid forties, and things are much better for women now that they were when my mum was young and than when I was growing up in the seventies.

We've still a hell of a long way to go though, and the oversexualisation of everything nowadays is just fucking grim.

MimsyBorogroves · 15/08/2013 18:10

Eew.

I'd not heard this one. Thankfully.

curiousgeorgie · 15/08/2013 18:12

It is just a song though.

I actually really like it, so does my 2 year old. (And everyone else I know!)

There are so many things in this world to get up in arms about. I don't get how you can all get so worked up over a song to be honest.
