To love Google Street View?!

I do! I could spend hours on there. DH gives me this look when ever he sees me trawling the globe Hmm and you can practically see the speech bubble coming out of his head that thinks 'geek.' Grin
I mean, you can go all over. Just last night I was meandering down Rodeo Drive a'la Pretty Woman looking at all the designer shops I'd so get booted out by snotty sales assistants in RL
I'm improving my geography too. I didn't know Alaska, US, and Russia practically touch in a certain place.
Now I do!
I was also in Bangkok.
Is anyone else a Google Street Geek?!

I don't like it! It's one thing having a few passers-by going up and down the street. But it seems different having a periscope taking pictures of each house for millions of people to see.

SantanaLopez · 11/08/2013 22:42

Oh that game is amazing! Thanks! Flowers

ShakeAndVac · 11/08/2013 22:43

I think I may have just found something to keep me occupied for many happy hours

Oh yes,it's a definite time suck! Grin

It's only what people would see if they physically walked down your street though, so what's the difference?

We play a family version of GeoGuessr - one person starts by zooming in close on Google Maps/Earth to a location the whole family has been to or knows (like a theme park or holiday destination). The others then take a look. First one to identify it wins; you can scroll out slowly to reveal more of the surrounding area if that helps the guessing. I hated geography at school but find Google Earth addictive too!

Cooroo · 11/08/2013 22:57

I love to go somewhere random and drive along. Especially coastal. Spent a lovely afternoon in California when work was quiet.

ChasingDogs · 11/08/2013 22:57

I love it, I was wandering around some suburb in Japan the other day (no idea where, I just clicked a random bit of the map) and I often "visit" small towns in different countries.

I refuse to click the geoguessr link though- the last time I did that I lost an entire afternoon! It's really bloody addictive. Smile

ShakeAndVac · 11/08/2013 23:08

I also love to visit UK namesakes in other countries. My town but in a different country just to see how they compare.
Think along the lines of visiting Newcastle in Oklahoma for example and seeing how they differ in looks and amenities! Smile

There isn't the possibility of millions of people walking down my street at once, each with a long-lens camera on a stick.

OK, maybe you won't get a million people at once down your street with a long lens camera, but the street car only picks up what the average person on the street can see.

My beautiful ultra-glamorous mate was caught on there putting the bins out wearing her DH's sweatshirt and trackies. I don't understand why she was so mortified, she still looked better than 99% of the rest of us!

CorrineFoxworth · 11/08/2013 23:15

I also love it. If I read about a place I can "go" there and I do.

The internet is sometimes annoying when you're trying to find the house teenage DC needs picking up from and bloody Zoopla decides to pop up telling you it's worth three quarters of a million Sad

happybubblebrain · 11/08/2013 23:17

I love it too, I've spent hours on there.

My favourite thing to do is choose a costal town on rightmove, pick a house at random, then try and find the sea with streetview using the obvious clues and my intuition. Sometimes it takes ages, but if feels like I'm really there (and not here) with is brilliant. Love it.

jellybeans · 11/08/2013 23:31

I am an addict too. Love it and use it often.

I opened this thread an hour ago.....geoguessr is a tad addictive!!!! And I love google earth too!

Saffyz · 12/08/2013 00:12

Not really... there are quite a few photos which give a giraffe's eye view into people's private gardens, for example.

CorrineFoxworth · 12/08/2013 00:15

And empty wine-bottles seen through the window too according to the MN chat threads when it was new Grin

redwellybluewelly · 12/08/2013 00:20

I'm a bit addicted since we got the very first beta version - its a part of my work toolkit, I use it every day and I get paid to do so!

Look for the plane graveyard in USA, every plane you can imagine stacked in piles across a huge swathe of desert.

Tis fab.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 12/08/2013 00:24

I love it. We are moving back to the UK on Thursday - I've been able to show DD the house we are moving to, the school she is going to, where my parents live, where the closest shop is...
She feels much more comfortable with the idea.
I started a thread a couple of months ago about it. I hadn't realized that Google go around renewing the pictures. Our house in the NW looks much nicer than when we first looked at it on street view.

ShakeAndVac · 12/08/2013 01:00

Right, I've had a go on GeoGuessr thingy now. T'is very good! Although I'm a bit crap at it. I find if I meander down the street a little bit and zoom in on the nearest street sign though I'm a hell of a lot better Grin
the street sign in Chinese gave the location away a bit

I love it too! Did you know you can walk around inside the White House using it?

WhispersOfWickedness · 12/08/2013 08:44

Wow, thank you for the link to geoguesser! So addictive Grin I got some fairly close, was quite pleased! Grin

hiddenhome · 12/08/2013 08:48

I often find myself totally lost in Siberia Grin

ouryve · 12/08/2013 08:50

DS1 goes for virtual walks on it.
