been watching 'The men that made us thin' and am simply overwhelmed.

So diets don't work....most people end up heavier than if they had not dieted at all...one guy was like "well duh! if they worked we would lose our customers"....another wrote a book aimed at teenage girls including the advice to " buy scales and keep them secret from your parents"

The constant stream of adverts aimed at middle aged women are seen by children who by age 6-7 have self-esteem issues and can quote the number of calories in most foods...

My evil-ometer is broken.

Darkesteyes,

Try My Fitness Pal they have an phone app and website with different weight measurements ie. Spoons, cups, ounces, gramms. Plus you can use your phone to scan barcodes on food packaging.

Plus it is free. You can save your favourite meals and add with one click once they are in the system. Takes a few days to get into the swing of it and then it is really easy to use.

dark I am guessing you will have sorted it out by now, but to get the actual amount of anything you take:

amount it says eg 154 kcal and divide by the weight that was for eg 30g serving and then multiply by the amount you are going to eat eg 60g eaten.

so 154/ 30 = 5.13 and 5.13 * 60 = 308 kcal eaten.

I'm not accusing you of eating twice the recommended serving Grin

It's not the diet industry we should be blaming for the obesity epidemic - it's the (industrialised) food industry!

haggisandneeps · 15/08/2013 11:33

Darkesteyes you could be me! I lost 10 stones 6lbs in one year with Slimming World and ended up with gallstones (now removed) My hospital consultant told me I lost weight too fast which is why I ended up with them.

My way of eating is totally messed up now. My body seems to have trouble with a lot of foods and I still get phantom gallbladder pain. I am 1 stone 10lbs heavier than I was when I stopped Slimming World (had to stop exercise when I was recovering from surgery and couldn't be arsed to start again) and due to this thread I have thrown out my scales and will stop eating low fat crap and processed crap and will get some form of exercise in every day even if it is Just Dance on the Wii with the kids or whatever as I can't afford the gym. I will weigh myself once a fortnight at Boots and keep on top of it that way.

Good luck on your WW journey.

Darkesteyes · 15/08/2013 15:24

Thankyou haggis Thanks Im 5 stone heavier than when i stopped SW. Sad Whenever i cut my portion sizes and eat small portions i get sharp shooting pains all over my stomach and back Its like gallstone pain Not as excrutiating but bad enough.
When i eat a lot the pain doesnt seem to happen.
As for trouble with foods i cant eat bananas any more . Because i end up in excrutiating gallstone type pain I have the same reaction to co codamol tabs as i do with bananas.
I talked to the consultant on the phone just now and she said i need to eat more protein I thought id have trouble getting up to my allocated 34 ppts but i might be ok We shall see.
Haggis im sorry for the pain youve been through Wouldnt wish this on anyone.
I sometimes get pains when eating some veg too Makes it bloody hard to eat healthily.

haggisandneeps · 15/08/2013 15:44

I totally understand!

Banana's, raisins, apples, citrus fruits and some vegetables have me in complete agony. So do quite a few other foods but I'm giving examples of healthy foods that I can no longer eat.

I have to eat often (every couple of hours or so) to keep the pain at bay. Once it gets past a certain point then I throw up and pass out the pain is that bad. I've ended up in hospital numerous times with it.

Sorry you're going through it too Flowers

Darkesteyes · 15/08/2013 15:58

haggis yours is worse than mine Im so sorry. Thanks And ppl abuse me in the street because im big not realising that eating a lot of healthy low fat foods cause me pain.

Totally agree the diet industry is evil, and I also think most of these low calorie ready meals are a waste of time, they are low in calories yes but they are not always healthy and don't fill you up.

Losing weight is very simple, all you need to do is find out what a healthy weight is for you height/age/gender is and what daily calorie intake is needed to maintain that weight. Whatever that daily calorie intake is, then that is your limit.

As long as you always have a calorie deficit below the calorific needs to maintain your current body weight than you will lose weight, this can be helped along with a good amount of exercise.

Also the most important thing is to learn about nutrition there are many foods out there that people assume are healthy but are not at all healthy. Bread for instance is high in calories, especially white bread so always eat wholemeal, same with pasta and rice always opt for wholemeal. If you like to eat potatoes, buy sweet potatoes, they are a complex carbohydrate and have slow release energy and taste great too. Obviously it goes without saying but eating plenty of veg especially dark green veg like spinach and broccoli is very good for you, and helps you feel full. Having a good source of protein is also essential, skinless chicken breast, fish such as mackrel and very lean red meat which helps with iron intake.

Starving yourself, and depriving your body of its needs with silly soup diets is never a good idea because when you starve your body you will lose weight. Though once you resume a higher calorie intake your body then holds onto to it as fat stores because it has previously been starved and it doesn't know when its next meal will be so it keeps it as reserves. This is why when people lose weight drastically often end up putting it back on plus some extra.

All that's needed is:

Healthy Diet
Portion Control
Exercise

Sorry for the long post....I have a bad habit of doing that eek!!

Darkesteyes · 15/08/2013 17:54

Well Less than 24 hours after starting WW i am now shitting out orange water Fan bloody tastic.

Darkesteyes · 15/08/2013 18:01

Happened just after eating a tangerine. Id literally put the last segment in my mouth and had to go straight to the bathroom

RightsaidFreud · 15/08/2013 18:06

I wouldn't eat fruit whilst trying to lose weight, it's full of sugar. Doesn't matter that its 'natural sugar', it's still sugar.

Darkesteyes · 15/08/2013 18:18

Im follwing WW and on their Pro Points Plan you eat fruit.

Ilovemyself · 15/08/2013 18:19

Rightsaidfreud.. Fruit is fine on a diet, and in quantity. Of course, if you just eat fruit and do it all day every day it will not help, but as part of a healthy balanced diet.

Darkesteyes · 15/08/2013 18:19

Or try to in my case Hmm

Wishihadabs · 15/08/2013 19:23

Dark eyes and Haggis so sorry what you have gone through. [Thanks]. I work in a hospital so have always been able to weigh myself on very accurate scales once a week or so. I think it does help, my weight (not pregnant) has ranged from 69-56 kg (BMI 25-20) over the past 5 years, but I have never got to the stage when it seemed an unachievable mountain. I have never been on a diet, although b ave started 5:2 recently with good results. When I am getting heavier than I'd like to be I just cut back.

The whole diet industry is such a rip off. I am hoping that the rise of 5:2 will be their death toll.

'I am hoping that the rise of 5:2 will be their death toll'

Wishi, I expect someone will soon try and cash in on this with some product or package which promises to help people stick to the 5:2 regime Hmm
(if they haven't already?)

EagleRiderDirk · 15/08/2013 19:57

they have already. other than books galore, there is now a special vitamin supplement. god knows what they will come up with next, but come up with it they shall

mercury7 · 15/08/2013 20:28

exploiting peoples weaknesses is always going to be an easy way to make a fast buck, thats why we have payday loan companies, the diet industry, fast food, cheap booze etc ect

Darkesteyes · 15/08/2013 21:04

Am watching a programme about The Healthy trap on itv. Part of the Tonight strand.
Wish someone would do a programme about mine and Haggis"es experience.
Our experiences are basically the story that never gets told. You wont see stories like ours in the weight loss or womens mags.
When someone on these programmes talks about ppl regaining weight after a big loss i always wonder if theyve been through similar to me and have regained due to the fact that healthier food now causes them pain. Because of my experience i dont believe that someone REgaining after loss is always down to lack of willpower.
