To be irritated by what this sonographer said?

I recently had my 12 week dating scan. I declined the nuchal translucency scan, so was just going for the standard dating/measuring.

As soon as we got into the room the sonographer confirmed that I had declined the NT scan. The scan went as expected, baby looks fine etc.

At the end of the scan the sonographer said "I know you declined the NT scan, but I had a quick look at the baby's neck and it all looks normal. I would tell you if there was an obvious abnormality there".

Now, is it just me or is this not really in the spirit of us declining that test? If the sonographer had said it looked abnormal, then we would have been in exactly the position we wanted to avoid Confused

I understand that the sonographer was trying to be helpful, but AIBU to be a little annoyed by this?

OMG it is not acceptable to ressurect a zombie thread that gives me a huge amount of rage and then removes any satisfaction from wading in and having a rant. Although, clearly didn't stop the resurrector.

SpaceUnicorn · 21/07/2016 20:41

Tbh I think if you complain because a HCP has reassured you that your baby doesn't have a health problem, you really are being unfair.

Absolutely.

Some people really do seem to make a career out of finding things to be affronted by.

SpaceUnicorn · 21/07/2016 20:42

Oh fucking zombie!!!!!!!! Blush

PatMullins · 21/07/2016 20:44

"Before you jump the gun"

Maybe take your own advice and check the date of the thread?

Goingtobeawesome · 21/07/2016 20:51

It can't be right that they do what you asked them not too.

I declined amino and other tests and they didn't like it Hmm.

thisisafakename · 21/07/2016 21:05

YABVU. Surely people reject the test because it's invasive?? Not because they absolutely would not want to know until the birth whether there were any abnormalities. I really do wonder about some people- my reaction would be a huge sigh of relief and I would be extremely grateful to the sonographer because it would otherwise have been at the back of my mind as a worry. Your baby is fine and healthy. Surely there's no element of 'ruining the surprise' when it comes to serious birth defects? Be very very grateful that you can now relax a bit more ahead of the birth.

PurpleDaisies · 21/07/2016 21:06

This is why zombie threads should be locked...

thisisafakename · 21/07/2016 21:06

Whaaaaat noooooo- why do these idiots have to resurrect old threads???? So annoying.

thisisafakename · 21/07/2016 21:09

PLEASE MNHQ can you do this- prevent posting on old threads. It's so annoying. If people want to come back and update then they can start a new thread and link to the old one- surely an exception to the TAAT rule?

I got myself all upset and worked up about this post and now I realise it's from 2 years ago.

Thanks

Vixyboo · 21/07/2016 21:32

Last year at the 12 week scan I was told our baby had anencephaly and could not survive.

I would give my right arm to be reassured all is ok next time.

I realise you didn't want to know but you do know and fortunately your baby is ok.

I wish I had been told my baby was ok.

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 21/07/2016 21:34

This thread is years old

MsJudgemental · 21/07/2016 21:35

Why are you angry at being told your baby is OK? You may have declined the nuchal but wouldn't she have been failing in her duty if she withheld telling you that there was an issue?

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 21/07/2016 21:36

mum2Bomg · 21/07/2016 22:28

Sorry but this is ridiculous! You didn't want the test so don't have the test but why wouldn't you want to know what they see on the scan? They're not the same thing!

Why did you go for a scan in the first place?

PurpleDaisies · 21/07/2016 22:43

The op has probably forgotten given that is was THREE YEARS AGO.

Why doesn't the zombie alert stay around longer?

lljkk · 21/07/2016 22:55

It sounds like...
They didn't measure the NF
OP didn't get the NF test at all
But the sonographer is experienced, and could tell at a glance that the NF was within low risk numbers.
So that's all they told OP.
The sonographer has a set routine in each exam to make sure they don't forget anything, so that's why the couldn't help but pause & notice the NF

They didn't do it just to irritate OP. Confused

You sound crotchety, OP.

lljkk · 21/07/2016 22:55

Oh Fig, Purple, I wish I had noticed the date!!!

ZOMBIE

April229 · 21/07/2016 23:04

The NT test is done just by looking at a close up of a picture they take during the scan, why wouldn't you want it done, just out of interest?

farkoff · 21/07/2016 23:09

Fucks sake.

Cyclewidow46 · 21/07/2016 23:11

The sonographer was most likely reassuring you that the baby didn't have a cystic hygroma, not a raised NT.
With regards do the comment don't buy anything blue, sonographers really don't care regarding the sex of any baby unless looking for or even finding a gender specific abnormality.
Obviously the Op is aware that the anomaly scan will be looking for markers for chromosomal abnormalities as well?
Was the Op given the option to have the NT measured due to the association of a large NT with cardiac abnormality or would she not want to be aware of the possibility of a possible cardiac problem early on and have an early cardiac scan at 16 weeks?

Cyclewidow46 · 21/07/2016 23:14

Just noticed date of original Post Blush
