AIBU to think that wiping your dog's bottom is unnecessary?!

So, out for a peaceful stroll today and I saw a woman bend down and wipe her pooch's bum with toilet paper. Wtf! Is this normal because I've never owned a dog and having to do this would certainly put me off.

I think some longer haired breeds get some caught in their fur IYKWIM. I think that's quite good TBH.

lifesgreatquestions · 05/08/2013 19:16

Ha! I can imagine thinking that needed to be done. Must put that down on my list of reasons to not get a dog!

Sparklingbrook · 05/08/2013 19:18

If she didn't wipe it, it would be on her soft furnishings when she got back. Sad

YY to no dogs here too lifes.

VivaLeBeaver · 05/08/2013 19:20

My mum has shitzus (ha ha) and they sometimes need their bottoms wiping as they get poo stuck in their hair.

I have bad memories as a child having to hold the dog still while my dad soaked rock hard shit out the dogs fur with a soapy rag.

Nannyme1 · 05/08/2013 19:20

I refused to do it I one job but is needed if dog has a lot of fur I the bum area.

Sparklingbrook · 05/08/2013 19:21

Ooh no Viva.

Fairylea · 05/08/2013 19:21

Brings a whole new meaning to "puppies on a roll"....

BoysAreLikeDogs · 05/08/2013 19:27

Ugh

I am reminded of that joke Viva: I went to the zoo, it only had one dog, it was a shitzu. Pa ha ha ha.

mrsravelstein · 05/08/2013 19:28

puts hand up to having to trim my dog's bum hair to stop it getting poo matted in it. nice. (and this is why i always had cats up til now)

Sparklingbrook · 05/08/2013 19:30

Ooh the whole 'anal gland squeezing' thing makes owning a dog a complete no-no for me.

PostmanPatAlwaysRingsTwice · 05/08/2013 19:35

mrsravelstein I read that as 'puts hand up dog's bum' Shock Grin

Anyway yes, another reason not to have a dog!

candycoatedwaterdrops · 05/08/2013 19:41

Sometimes you have to so it doesn't get stuck in their fur. It's grim and embarrassing to do in public. On the other hand, having worked in childcare and changing nappies for 6 years, I can assure you that dog bum wiping is not as bad as baby bum wiping!

VivaLeBeaver · 05/08/2013 19:41

I've never had to squeeze anal glands. I think that's a James Herriot/Tricky Woo myth.

VivaLeBeaver · 05/08/2013 19:42

My dog did once stand in another dog's poo and I had to clean shit out between her pads with a baby wipe.

aldiwhore · 05/08/2013 19:44

I used to do this occasionally, but usually if I knew there'd be trouble. Easier than picking off the winnets later on, that was the worst side of dog ownership and it was a big enough one for me not to replace my lovely pooch when he died.

Mostly though, my dog was an avid bum walker on the grass so he self wiped.

Tortoise · 05/08/2013 19:44

I've had to pull a hair out of my dogs bum that had poo crumbs on it!

onedogandababy · 05/08/2013 19:45

The vet squeezes the anal glands. We just mention when we're there for something else.
Never wiped her bum. Though DP has pulled stuff out when she's eaten to much grass. I refuse to do that. Too grim.

MamaChubbyLegs · 05/08/2013 19:46

Well, there goes my DPs chances of EVER having a pet of the non caged variety.

VivaLeBeaver · 05/08/2013 19:47

I just had to,google winnet. Every days a school day!

Sparklingbrook · 05/08/2013 19:47

Oh no Viva a dog stepping in dog poo? Sad

Our local grooming parlour advertises that they 'express anal glands'.

BoysAreLikeDogs · 05/08/2013 19:49

Hah Mama and we haven't even TOUCHED on cats that eat rubber bands and need lollipops eased outta their bums. Lollipop ain't a sweetie in this context, btw.

MissTweed · 05/08/2013 19:50

Sometimes if the dog has been eating grass then they can get a dangly and need a helping hand pulling it out. If you don't the dog goes nuts and it will be dragged across your cream sofa/carpets/cushions (I speak from experience!)

5hounds · 05/08/2013 19:51

My greyhound was munching grass like a cow one day . . Role on 24hours she had a poo. 2/3rds of the grass was still in her. Had to hold it with a poo bag and pull. Ewwww

squoosh · 05/08/2013 19:51

I don't like dogs with fluffy bums that need wiping and I don't like dogs like boxers who blatantly flaunt their bum holes.

Capitola · 05/08/2013 19:52

My dog's groomer does the anal glands and she trims his bum hole hair so neatly, there's nothing for shit to stick to.

Our poor old dog had big problems with her bum and we got very used to cleaning it and helping her to poo by applying pressure!
