to give dd food before paying for it?

Went to shops today with dcs. Dd was a bit tired and hungry and I wanted to get in and out quickly and home.

She was very hungry and has health issues and needed to eat that minute so I picked something up and let her have it. I have not done this before but couldn't have gone and paid then given it to her and continued shopping as she needed to eat straight away. Usually I have a snack in my bag for her but she had already had that one and I was going to buy more snack bits for her from the shops to replenish the ones I carry for her.

I noticed that a shop assistant was watching us intently and kept seeing her as we went round the shop.

When we got to the till I took the packet off dd for the man to scan and gave it back to her. As we were leaving the member of staff who had been watching approached us with a security guard and asked had we paid for what dd had eaten round the shop. I replied yes we had but she asked to check the receipt which obviously was fine.

She then told me that in future we HAD to pay for food before consuming it. I explained to her that it was a one off as I had run out of snacks I usually carry and dd needed to eat immediately but the security guard said food has to be paid for first.

It wasn't like I do this all the time and tbh as long as the food is paid for does it really matter?

WIBU to have let dd eat her snack before we had paid for it?

Exactly, Horry. My niece works in a supermarket and I'd hate to see her comment sneered at like that.

Emilythornesbff · 01/08/2013 16:32

Really?

Tbh I do think it is a bit rude to leave sticky rubbish on a checkout belt.
I certainly wouldn't do it.
But I also find it ridiculous, and slightly amusing that someone describes that experience as the worst thing they've encountered.

ilovecolinfirth · 01/08/2013 20:50

I know that lots of people do it, but to be honest I class it as theft, as until you have purchased the items they do not belong to you.

Obviously it's a difficult matter if your child has diabetes, but I would personally park the trolley at customer services, ask them to look after it and then buy a quick snack at the self service till.

Imagine if you fed your child during the trip and you got to the till and realised you had forgotten your purse or your card got rejected.

Mitzyme · 01/08/2013 20:59

Well I thought it was funny Emily, but then I am lazy, entitled and a thief with now obviously a very suspect sense of humour.

Mitzyme · 01/08/2013 21:01

Oh dear God not the what if you forgot your purse scenario. Thought that had been dealt with pages ago.

Emilythornesbff · 01/08/2013 21:05

Thanks mitzyme
I thought it was funny.
And quite harmless. But now I am an abuser of supermarket cashiers as well as a feckless parent .

colinfirth It would be embarrassing to have forgotten one's purse. That's very true.
I always check it as I walk in.

tittytittyhanghang · 01/08/2013 21:06

I dont get the forget your purse thing. Surely you'd just go to the car/home and get it? Then come back and get your shopping. Fuck walking round a supermarket for an hour for nowt, then having to do it all again.

Emilythornesbff · 01/08/2013 21:06

And I always have a couple of quid in my pocket. Even in waitrose a baton only costs £1.25

Emilythornesbff · 01/08/2013 21:07

Or I could turn it round in it's pack so they can't see the chewed end Grin

ZingWidge · 01/08/2013 21:08

In BB voice: "Day 5 of GrazeHog Day. the thread mates are discussing the 'what if you left your purse' scene for the upcoming drama performance.
some are not happy"

Had a great chat with the manager about how well he had sorted the twin trolley issue I had ( I guess some of you remember - and yes he listened, got 30 more twin trolleys and retrained his staff to make sure the twins are always separate.)

He looked at the twins and commented it was good to see them eating fruit. As they were from mini mixed packs of fruit it was obvious they were from his store. He didn't question me one bit........................

I think that says it all really.

And I lovecolinfitrh. It doesn't matter that you class it as theft. It's what the law classes it as, and it doesn't !

BadztMaru · 01/08/2013 22:23

Not read all the thread so apologies of I've missed anything but why cant so many people and their children make it round a supermarket without eating? (Apart, possibly, from people with diabetes etc)
You can't go an hour or whatever without eating?

BadztMaru · 01/08/2013 22:24

And I've never had to give my children food as we walk round the supermarket either, not sure why so many people need to do this?

Mitzyme · 01/08/2013 22:36

Badz, don't go there. You have missed, cake, forgotten purses/cards, BB VoiceOver and traumatised checkout persons. Obese children, lazy, entilted parents and grandparents, who steal.
Oh and Groundhog Day.
Again and again and again.

Ilovemyself · 01/08/2013 22:36

BadztMaru. We needed to shop today as the cupboards were empty and we only got money today.

Because of my job and the fact my wife doesn't drive we had to go when I got home from work.

We knew the twins would be hungry, but we needed to go straight away. We got some small packs of fruit pieces and they were quiet and happy all the way round.

Life doesn't always allow you to plan everything exactly the way you want it to so sometimes these things are a must

Emilythornesbff · 01/08/2013 22:38

What I really want to know is...

ZingWidge · 01/08/2013 22:40

yes Ems?

what bothers you?

Emilythornesbff · 01/08/2013 22:40

Is aisle grazing ever acceptable?

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

ZingWidge · 01/08/2013 22:41

mitzy and scoffing. don't forget about the scoffing! Grin

Emilythornesbff · 01/08/2013 22:41

Because I can't seem to see any answers on this thread.

ZingWidge · 01/08/2013 22:42

I don't know, sorry.
I'm wondering about eye candy instead

Emilythornesbff · 01/08/2013 22:44

Eye candy? What's taken your fancy?

Caboodle · 01/08/2013 22:45

Bugger.....I missed the cake, and the brownies.

PrincessScrumpy · 01/08/2013 22:50

Was it the person's first day and they are being ott?
To be fair, I thought it was a terrible thing to do and never did it with dd1 (for whom I have been the perfect parent... Organic home made everything etc), then I had dtds and I now regularly do it and hand the lady/man packaging. Usually I do it at the till as that is when mine get fractious.
