to give dd food before paying for it?

Went to shops today with dcs. Dd was a bit tired and hungry and I wanted to get in and out quickly and home.

She was very hungry and has health issues and needed to eat that minute so I picked something up and let her have it. I have not done this before but couldn't have gone and paid then given it to her and continued shopping as she needed to eat straight away. Usually I have a snack in my bag for her but she had already had that one and I was going to buy more snack bits for her from the shops to replenish the ones I carry for her.

I noticed that a shop assistant was watching us intently and kept seeing her as we went round the shop.

When we got to the till I took the packet off dd for the man to scan and gave it back to her. As we were leaving the member of staff who had been watching approached us with a security guard and asked had we paid for what dd had eaten round the shop. I replied yes we had but she asked to check the receipt which obviously was fine.

She then told me that in future we HAD to pay for food before consuming it. I explained to her that it was a one off as I had run out of snacks I usually carry and dd needed to eat immediately but the security guard said food has to be paid for first.

It wasn't like I do this all the time and tbh as long as the food is paid for does it really matter?

WIBU to have let dd eat her snack before we had paid for it?

Asda has wine on 3 for a tenner, we can drink 1 each and T-Rex all the way to the checkout.

Although, if you're making cocktails Zingwidge, I might open a bottle of vodka.

You know when you go to a restaurant (a proper one, not MaccyD's) you get to eat food and drink wine before paying for it. IS THAT THEFT?

Ilovemyself · 31/07/2013 22:49

Oh FFS tabulahrasa. Your whole argument works only if the person intends NOT to pay for the goods. Otherwise every single thing you purchase is theft as you are permanently depriving the owner of it.

Caboodle · 31/07/2013 23:24

Zingwidge, I'm in. Can my cocktail have Ribena in it please?

And Tabu (I know I'm going to regret this but....) is intending to pay the equivalent of a outright taking or disposal?

(Yup.....groundhog day....which I have never actually seen....is it any good?)

Caboodle · 31/07/2013 23:26

Ooops....Ilovemyself....don't know how but didn't see your post....I'd claim xpost but timeline says not....better not make me a cocktail Grin

ZingWidge · 31/07/2013 23:38

vodka, ribena - coming up!Grin

yes caboodle it's a good film.
btw is your name Scrubs inspired?

tabulahrasa · 31/07/2013 23:38

All I'm saying is that intending to pay is besides the point because you've already disposed of it by eating it, you may pay for it you may not, but at the point in time that you've disposed of it's not your property. Taking shopping round with you hasn't disposed of it.

Some supermarkets may not actually object to it because some people will pay, some people will mean to but forget and some people never intend to but either way they've sold a full load of shopping and its not worth hassling people over a packet of crisps that they may pay for anyway. But if they come over and say, actually that's not yours to eat until you've paid for it, they're right.

If you're walking round eating crisps that you haven't paid for and the store staff don't care, go ahead...but it doesn't make it your bag of crisps till you've actually paid for it.

Caboodle · 31/07/2013 23:40

Zingwidge - I wish it was 'cause it would be so much cooler (shows age by use of 'cool')

tabulahrasa · 01/08/2013 10:24

Hey - you can't narrate that it's still going on when I've got wine and cake for winning...that's just mean.

That just makes winning virtual prizes meaningless... oh hang on...
