to give dd food before paying for it?

Went to shops today with dcs. Dd was a bit tired and hungry and I wanted to get in and out quickly and home.

She was very hungry and has health issues and needed to eat that minute so I picked something up and let her have it. I have not done this before but couldn't have gone and paid then given it to her and continued shopping as she needed to eat straight away. Usually I have a snack in my bag for her but she had already had that one and I was going to buy more snack bits for her from the shops to replenish the ones I carry for her.

I noticed that a shop assistant was watching us intently and kept seeing her as we went round the shop.

When we got to the till I took the packet off dd for the man to scan and gave it back to her. As we were leaving the member of staff who had been watching approached us with a security guard and asked had we paid for what dd had eaten round the shop. I replied yes we had but she asked to check the receipt which obviously was fine.

She then told me that in future we HAD to pay for food before consuming it. I explained to her that it was a one off as I had run out of snacks I usually carry and dd needed to eat immediately but the security guard said food has to be paid for first.

It wasn't like I do this all the time and tbh as long as the food is paid for does it really matter?

WIBU to have let dd eat her snack before we had paid for it?

I have been a supermarket checkout girl, and it is really unpleasant for the operator. Picking up a sticky opened packet to scan was for me absolutely the worst thing about the job. Uurgh.

HarderToKidnap · 01/08/2013 14:27

If that's the worst thing about your job you are very lucky!

Emilythornesbff · 01/08/2013 14:50

Picking up an bag of bananas that has already been opened must be quite traumatic too. Or raisins with one little box missing.

Don't cashier staff have PTSD counselling for these things?

Or has the budget for that been obliterated by all the thieving, scoffing, face stuffing greedy chats?

She didn't say that did she? And is that comment about PTSD supposed to be funny?

neepsandtatties · 01/08/2013 15:45

I don't think it's a biggie, I've never done it but that's because I'm one of those awful mothers who bribes 'if we get around the supermarket without you whinging you can have a bag of crisps in the car' (with aforementioned packet of crips frequently being walked back to the shelf when DC whinges). But I hardly think that's the epitome of parenting, so YANBU. However, I have to say, now DC is 6, it is quite useful that he knows that he is not allowed to eat something until we've paid for it, so he wouldn't try to.

Emilythornesbff · 01/08/2013 15:51

I wasn't making a joke about PTSD.
I was making a joke about the fact that someone felt the worst thing they ever had to do was touch an opened packet.
So don't start suggesting that I'm belittling the experience of anyone who actually has been through PTSD. As I know that's where you were headed with that loaded comment.

supergreenuk · 01/08/2013 15:52

I do this every time I shop. In fact today I opened a pack of biscuits for the kids and they had one each. When I got to the till I noticed a slit in the packet. I asked them to discard the packet at the till once I paid and I explained why and they insisted I had a fresh packet.

Have you named and shamed yet?

HorryIsUpduffed · 01/08/2013 15:57

Emily it was pretty rude though. It doesn't matter if it isn't the worst thing evah: if it's even remotely unpleasant we should take it into account.

tittytittyhanghang · 01/08/2013 15:58

im just back from the weekly shop and im sure i'd be lynched for what ds ate. Usually he only has a cookie but today he had two bits of cheese and a bit of quiche (free samples so dont really count), a large end of a salt & pepper baguette, a cookie and a fruit shoot. Tbf we were running late and he hadn't had lunch yet.

Emilythornesbff · 01/08/2013 16:00

What was rude?

ilovesooty · 01/08/2013 16:13

You referred to PTSD counselling flippantly. I don't think that's funny. And yes, your response to a perfectly reasonable post was rude. However, those in favour of grazing have obviously taken on the task of killing any actual debate.

ilovesooty · 01/08/2013 16:13

Sorry: some of the pro grazers.

HorryIsUpduffed · 01/08/2013 16:15

I found it rude that you completely discounted the feelings of a person who works in a supermarket by posting flippant comments about whether that was the most traumatic thing that had ever happened to her.

Sure it's funny ha ha ha but that's a real person there, who probably feels demeaned enough by thoughtless customers without having to process their discarded rubbish as well.
