To be scared of my new boss

Snuffleupicus · 29/07/2013 12:33

I work in IT. I'm a total geek. I'm also profoundly atheist and extremely fact based.
If you don't try to convert me you'd never know but get me on topic and I'll run with it.
Havent met him yet, but just checked his linked in profile and he follows deepak chopra. Seriously. I'm supposed to respect his opinion now?
This isn't one in 100 details on his profile. This is the one and only person he has chosen to follow on linked in.
If I'd been recruiting I wouldn't have even interviewed someone with that on their linkedin profile.

I'd respect him following the new pope more tbh ( not the old one mind ).

OP posts:

YABU.

It's not really any of your business is it? His beliefs are his own and as long as his technical ability is up to scratch then yes, you are supposed to respect him.

If you can't handle other people having different beliefs and opinions you might as well become a hermit and you enjoy your fact-based atheism to your heart's content.

countrymummy13 · 29/07/2013 12:42

Yes, you are being completely unreasonable! And quite frankly utterly ridiculous.

You need to chill out.

Do you seriously think everyone you work with will have, or should have, the same spiritual beliefs as you?!

At this stage you have absolutely no reason to believe your new boss' interest in Deepak Chopra will have any affect on his work. And anyway, you don't know on what basis or for what reason this person is connected with Chopra.

Stop making such wild assumptions and judgements and get a grip.

I just had to double check that this was MumsNet and not Reddit...

DidoTheDodo · 29/07/2013 12:44

Agree with the above that you're being U.
And pretty judgey too. Where's your diversity hat?
Here's hoping he is very efficient at his job and a jolly nice person to boot.

youmeatsix · 29/07/2013 12:45

anyone who feel the need to proclaim "I'm a total geek" ........ never is

claig · 29/07/2013 12:45

YABU.
You are being ridiculous. He can believe in whatever he wants, and frankly someone who is interested in Deepak Chopra sounds a lot more interesting and open-minded than an atheist who dismisses someone simply because of that.

lurkedtoolong · 29/07/2013 12:46

Why would this scare you? Of course you're being unreasonable, judgemental and a bit precious.

DidoTheDodo · 29/07/2013 12:47

I am interested as to why, OP, you say you are "scared" of him. It's a curious turn of phrase.

EvieanneVolvic · 29/07/2013 12:47

Agree with the others: for someone who claims to be fact based (and for that I assume rational as well) you are thinking in a totally irrational manner and from a somewhat uninformed position.

I mean I'm broadly with you, but your reaction seems a little bit out there to me.

StuntGirl · 29/07/2013 12:47

No way, I agree with you. I sometimes choose not to hire people based on their religious views too. Totes legit.

HesterShaw · 29/07/2013 12:52

Er...how about not being prejudiced and minding your own business?

How about saying you are scared of Jews or Muslims? No?

Get on with your job and let him do the same.

EvieanneVolvic · 29/07/2013 12:52

No way, I agree with you. I sometimes choose not to hire people based on their religious views too

Isn't that (borderline) illegal Stunt

Just occurs to me I may be have a total irony failure here, in which case please accept a gazillion apologies and a thousand Blush

ChasedByBees · 29/07/2013 12:52

YAB massively unreasonable and ridiculous.

countrymummy13 · 29/07/2013 12:53

StuntGirl are you being sarcastic?

Because not employing someone based on their religious views is illegal!

It's called discrimination and is outlawed in statute under The Equality Act 2010.

EvieanneVolvic · 29/07/2013 12:53

btw OP when I said I was broadly with you I meant I'm an atheist too!

Potteresque97 · 29/07/2013 12:53

Maybe they don't use the site much, I think you should keep this out of work, yabu and unprofessional...as long as the boss isn't quoting his spiritual guru in support of work decisions, you should forget you ever found that out.

HesterShaw · 29/07/2013 12:53

I think she was being what is known as sarcastic.

4thfloor · 29/07/2013 12:54

scared

why are you scared of him?

Yes you are BU and very closed minded and judemental.

Keeping mt fingers crossed you are never in a position to recruit people as your professional values are flawed

PaulSmenis · 29/07/2013 12:55

What is scary about Deepak Chopra?

StuntGirl · 29/07/2013 12:56

It's incredibly illegal Volvic Grin

Luckily the OP clearly isn't involved in any kind of recruitment, so all those non-geeky, non-fact based atheists applying at her work are safe.

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 29/07/2013 12:57

stuntgirl really?
It is against the law to discriminate against you because of your religion or belief. You are protected from religious discrimination in your workplace. This means you are protected:

whatever your religion or belief
whatever your employer's religion or belief
whether you are already working for your employer
whether you are applying for a job.

HairyGrotter · 29/07/2013 12:59

I'm an atheist and have very unsavoury views on spirituality, however, I always give people benefit of the doubt. I wouldn't be so harsh on someone who follows Deepak, I'd just stifle a giggle privately.

I doubt their beliefs will impact their ability at work?! Seems you're VU.

StuntGirl · 29/07/2013 13:00

I work in HR so am aware of the protected characteristics, but thanks anyway Cakes Grin

ilovesooty · 29/07/2013 13:05

It isn't April 1st is it?
