To be scared of my new boss

I work in IT. I'm a total geek. I'm also profoundly atheist and extremely fact based.
If you don't try to convert me you'd never know but get me on topic and I'll run with it.
Havent met him yet, but just checked his linked in profile and he follows deepak chopra. Seriously. I'm supposed to respect his opinion now?
This isn't one in 100 details on his profile. This is the one and only person he has chosen to follow on linked in.
If I'd been recruiting I wouldn't have even interviewed someone with that on their linkedin profile.

I'd respect him following the new pope more tbh ( not the old one mind ).

cos he will have authority over me, and if he tries any new age stuff I'll react badly

So he hasn't started his job yet and you don't trust him to be professional? If I were him I think I'd want to renege on the job offer if I knew I was going to have to manage someone so bigoted, immature and unprofessional.

OP you have the wrong end of the stick.

No one gives a flying turdfuck about Chopra. No one is sticking up for him in any way or being remotely 'woo' about him.

People only care about your single minded, no room for flexible thinking, prejudice.

Amrapaali · 29/07/2013 13:47

Oi, K8 what is a death breathe? Sounds ominous... Grin

WireCat · 29/07/2013 13:47

I've worked with many people who have different beliefs.
None of them have ever tried to convert me.

This includes working in another country that was heavily religious.

Eyesunderarock · 29/07/2013 13:48

No one is upset, and most people haven't got a clue who Deepak Chopra is.
You are a bit old to be this naive surely? You think he's going to insist you become a cult member? have to follow DC on twitter?
Go and play with your little one, she'll keep you grounded.

It's one you use on the unbelievers Am

Delayingtactic · 29/07/2013 13:50

It's not about the fact you have an issue with deepak. It's about your religious intolerance. .

If he starts handing you pamphlets or calling on the other world for business advice or tells you to do something random because the stars foretold it, everyone would be right behind you proclaiming nutter. But he's not. He's done nothing apart from add one line on LinkedIn. Get over yourself.

NicknameIncomplete · 29/07/2013 13:50

I work very closely with about 10 people. I dont think i know any of their religious thoughts or their beliefs.

All we talk about at work is what we watched on the tv.

Tittypulumpcious · 29/07/2013 13:53

“For those who believe, no proof is necessary. For those who don't believe, no proof is possible.”

I'll be handing out pamphlets later along with a free incense stick. Until then I shall sit in my peace bubble breathing in love breathing out negativity...Ommmmmmmmm

Hmmmmm. Trying to listen.
Thinking people may have a point.
I'll separate opinion of boss from opinion on his 'possible' beliefs.

I'll stop stressing and try to grow up a bit.
Thanks for the gentle smacking round the chops with a wet fish.

So. OP. Giving you benefit of the doubt.

  1. New boss follows DC on Linked In.
  • maybe new boss treats LinkedIn as more of a social than professional site.
  • maybe new boss thinks he looks "cool" by following DC.
  • maybe new boss really and truly believes and subscribes to DC's belief system, in which case...
  1. You fear that new boss will shove his belief system down his new employees' throats
  • maybe he won't
  • maybe he will and you will be able to overlook it
  • maybe he will and you won't be able to ignore it and you will report him to Human Resources
  • maybe you will have a lively discussion about your different beliefs based on mutual respect
  • maybe in retaliation you will try to shove your belief system down his throat resulting in you getting fired?

Does that about sum it up? I really, really think that the "not-getting-along-because-of-religious-beliefs-resulting-in-you-losing-your-job" scenario is what you are really posting about - and I also think it is very, very unlikely.

YouStayClassySanDiego · 29/07/2013 13:58

What new age stuff might he try out on you within the field of IT? Hmm

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 29/07/2013 13:58

Oops, x-post, sort of. Smile

K8Middleton · 29/07/2013 13:59

Wear your kaftan to work day?

Viviennemary · 29/07/2013 14:03

YABU. You meet a huge variety of people in the workplace and people are entitled to their beliefs or non-beleifs. I'd wait and see what the person is like before you make any judgements on them.

PiratePanda · 29/07/2013 14:10

Can I just point out that there are probably hundreds of perfectly non-woo Deepak Chopras in the world who just happen to share their name with afamous guru? There are more than a billion Indians you know.....

But even if he is a follower, why do you assume he would bring his beliefs into the workplace at all?

Oh, and you need to take a chill pill.

K8Middleton · 29/07/2013 14:50

Good point PiratePanda it might be a completely different one! I was once asked to pass on a message to Mr & Mrs Patel who lived on North Circular Road, London. The computer returned 8000+ results before it crashed but Rural of Bradford couldn't understand why I couldn't help her Hmm

Amrapaali · 29/07/2013 15:49

Good on you, OP for being generous and open in the end.

Keep returning to MN- tis the fount of all wisdom Grin

Amrapaali · 29/07/2013 15:50

And yes, always remember: "Happiness is a continuation of happenings which are not resisted."- Deepak Chopra

don't ask me to explain that one. Blasted if I know

WeleaseWodger · 29/07/2013 16:10

I'm just wondering how many people write down their religious beliefs on their CVs. How many elaborate on their active memberships in Church of Scientology or how many time they've read Eat Pray Love and how that's profoundly changed the way they look at life and their managment style?

Nobody here thinks it's highly unprofessional to tie your personal metaphysical/religious beliefs with his/her CV on LinkedIn (making it public for anyone to google), but it is highly unprofessional for others to then make any deductions/judgmenents on it, is it?

What are you all, the new messiahs who judge not?
