To be scared of my new boss

I work in IT. I'm a total geek. I'm also profoundly atheist and extremely fact based.
If you don't try to convert me you'd never know but get me on topic and I'll run with it.
Havent met him yet, but just checked his linked in profile and he follows deepak chopra. Seriously. I'm supposed to respect his opinion now?
This isn't one in 100 details on his profile. This is the one and only person he has chosen to follow on linked in.
If I'd been recruiting I wouldn't have even interviewed someone with that on their linkedin profile.

I'd respect him following the new pope more tbh ( not the old one mind ).

Yes, I think this is a wind-up.

EvieanneVolvic · 29/07/2013 13:12

Yes, I think this is a wind-up.

If it is then my apology for failing to spot the irony, which was addressed to Stunt, applies to Snuffle as well.

SelectAUserName · 29/07/2013 13:14

YABVU, undiverse and unprofessional. The beliefs of your colleagues are no-one's business but theirs; your boss hasn't attempted to force them on you, you've actively sought out his LinkedIn profile. Judge him on his ability to manage an IT team and nothing else.

LaurieFairyCake · 29/07/2013 13:14

You're an idiot with no imagination.

He could have been to a business seminar where Chopra was mentioned and followed him out of curiosity.

I follow people as diverse as Eckhart Tolle, Anthony Robbins and Oprah Winfrey.

They're interesting

Snuffleupicus · 29/07/2013 13:16

Potteresque kinda hit on my point. I prob wasnt clear enough.
The guy is enough of a follower that along with " project managed multi million pound projects " and "6-sigma guru", he CHOOSES to put "follows deepak chopra" on his work focused social media site.
He can believe in small chocolate coated fairies as far as I'm concerned.
What concerns me is his declaration of it as a "selling point" on his linked in profile.
Which makes me feel he will push it.
And I will have to push back.

I hate all this snooping about on FakeBook, LinkedIn, blogs, Instagram and all those other assorted streams-of-consciousness shite out there. Spying on a person and making snap, usually wrong judgements about them.

Very dangerous when it is used in the workplace. Hate it with a vengeance.

Snuffleupicus · 29/07/2013 13:19

Laurafairiecake.
As a matter of interest. Would you "follow"Oprah Winfrey on linked in when your applying for a new job.

OP posts:
Snuffleupicus · 29/07/2013 13:19

Amrapaali. And yet here you are.

OP posts:
Amrapaali · 29/07/2013 13:20

Sorry, forgot LinkedIn is more work-oriented. But still, don't judge on what he puts on that site. Talk to him, interact with him on a professional basis and if he spouts any New Age Chopra pearls of wisdom, tell him kindly to fuck off.

LaurieFairyCake · 29/07/2013 13:20

I cannot see how following Oprah Winfrey is a negative. Confused

Smart, rich, successful businesswoman who has changed the world for black women?

Tittypulumpcious · 29/07/2013 13:21

Urgh..Biscuit

SelectAUserName · 29/07/2013 13:21

But he hasn't "pushed it" yet, has he? So you are making an assumption. And if he does "Push it", you respond with "oh, I prefer to keep religion and politics out of the workplace" and change the subject.

It sounds to me as though you're dying for the opportunity to show off get into a debate about your "fact-based atheism" when in fact the professional response would be to keep non/belief systems OUT of the workplace altogether and encourage others to do the same.

Crinkle77 · 29/07/2013 13:23

Wow judgemental or what? You have not even met this person yet. As long as they are capable of doing their job and not trying to force their views on anyone else then leave them be.

Snuffleupicus · 29/07/2013 13:23

Oprah, who routinely promotes quacks like John of god and gives time to Jenny McCarthy

Amrapaali · 29/07/2013 13:23

Here I am? Confused

Well, this IS a public forum. I can be here. You can be here. The problem starts when I root around your profile, file away whatever "quirks" you happen to mention and use that information to judge you when you talk on other threads...

alwaysinamuckingfuddle · 29/07/2013 13:24

My first ever Biscuit

I think you need to grow up a bit, OP.

DaleyBump · 29/07/2013 13:24

Be sure to take a grip from the box on your way out.

LaurieFairyCake · 29/07/2013 13:24

This thread has reminded me why I don't work in IT any more Hmm

It genuinely gives me the creeps how controlling folks want to be over each others thoughts.

Eyesunderarock · 29/07/2013 13:25

His choices away from any interactions with you are entirely his business,a nd you are being extremely illogical to theorise and predict on a groundless basis.
You are afraid of him? Why? What possible cause has he given you to feel fear? When has someone believing in woo ever been scary to those who don't?
You need to remember that you are logical and fact-based and get a grip.

Snuffleupicus · 29/07/2013 13:26

We do all know deepak is a massive fraud right?

OP posts:
alwaysinamuckingfuddle · 29/07/2013 13:26

This is another reason why I am no longer on LinkedIn, Facebook or Twitter.

People make snap judgements about you that are generally wrong...

Eyesunderarock · 29/07/2013 13:27

Perhaps if it is impossible for you to work with someone a little alternative, you should look for another job that will embrace your intolerance completely.

EeyoreIsh · 29/07/2013 13:27

Who is deepak chopra?

You are, of course, being totally unreasonable. someone's religious (or otherwise) beliefs should have no impact on the work place.

FYI, people don't 'follow the Pope'. They are Christians who follow Jesus, and are Roman Catholic.

Snuffleupicus · 29/07/2013 13:28

Eyesunderarock. That's why I work in IT.

OP posts:
Eyesunderarock · 29/07/2013 13:28

He's a New Age Guru type.
But OP, you said you were scared. WHY?
