To not want to lend my old iPad to a complete stranger

I bought a new iPad for my birthday after having had the iPad 1 for three years (it would no longer do any updates, had issues charging etc.). I have quite a lot of games and cartoons on it, so planned on keeping it for my kids to use.
DH just came to ask me if one of his sisters friends can borrow it (I said I didn't mind DSIL borrowing it) and I said no (it's got quite a lot of personal things on it). He thinks IABU and wants to know what he's supposed to say to DSIL. I think he just says no.

Surely it would be perfectly reasonable to say what you've said here...ie that it's got personal stuff on it. That's what he's supposed to say to her!

I wouldn't lend it either! Is yours to do with as you wish. Just be honest..say to doesn't work properly that's why you bought a new one so there's no point lending it out if it doesn't work properly

Say no because you need it as kids use it everyday. What is her reasoning for needing it?
My iPad is my iPad I would feel very funny lending to anyone due to personal stuff being on it.

Tell sil that the children are now using it.

Why would someone want to borrow an ipad? Tell her the kids are using it during the holidays. Libraries offer free internet access if she needs a computer.

Assuming that you use the same apple ID for both iPads, then no way would I let anyone else use it. Any photos you add to your new iPad could be viewed on the old one. Any apps that you have or add will be useable on the old one. If they add apps on the old one they will appear on you new one, unless you password protect so they cannot add apps, which you would need to do so that they don't purchase paid for apps.

They would have access to your e-mails and contacts.

I'm not sure that it would be much use to them if you had everything locked and needing a password to use.

It's yours, tell dh to tell SiL you said no and that's the end of that.

Thank you, glad I don't seem to be BU about it. I would have to wipe it / restore it to factory settings (which I don't really want to do as I'd have to reinstall everything after), she'd have to create her own apple ID, and as has been mentioned I'd probably never get it back. I thought it was a bit cheeky of DSIL to even ask (I'm wondering how it even came up in a conversation with her friend???).

Nope, he still thinks I'm BU because I have my new one and the old one isn't being used Hmm . I give up (still saying no though).

I would say no too, I get really uncomfortable when people ask to look something up on my phone - my brother wanted to check the cricket scores the other day, because my phone has loads of personal stuff on it, and I wouldn't want anyone seeing what I have searched for - usually after reading threads on here so some of it is a bit dodgy (Terry Wogans cock for example!) and some of it just very personal - I last googled about anal fissures and piles Blush but its hard to say no, especially if they are standing right next to you and you have your phone in your hand at the time!

Strange request, to borrow an iPad, who asks that!?

Exactly. She's heard you've got a new one and wants the old one for nothing. Asking to "borrow" it sounds better than, "Can I have your old ipad for nothing?"

Does he know how apple products work? You don't lend them to people for their own use. And lend for how long? This sounds like 'give' by another name.

YANBU - ask him if he's quite willing to lend £200 to a random mate of your second cousin twice removed? Because that's how much you could get for your ipad1 if you sold it.

Ignoring the privacy and personal information, what if they damaged it? Sorry Viking - here, have it back. I've heard a man down the market can fix the smashed screen etc etc

Plus he should have even agreed with SIL about her friend without checking with you first. Bloody cheeky. He's supposed to say no to SIL. If he's said it's okay for a random mate to borrow it, then its his mess to clean up.

He's taken the DCs off to SIL's for the day to celebrate DS's birthday with the cousins. I'm sulking at home eating left over birthday cake from yesterday's party (we have to have 2 parties because one of the cousins is allergic to cats and can't come to our house).
