To be shocked that a woman is feeding her baby..

...a Capri Sun orange carton on the bus? The baby cannot be any older than 8 months. And the other day on the bus I saw a woman give her 2 year old a bottle of coke to drink. I know he was 2 because he was telling me about himself!

There are Capri Sun pouches with a spout like Ella's Kitchen pouches. Not tricky for an 8mo with help.

I also confirm that you can get "good" CS made of just water and pure juice.

But honestly, in this weather, on a sauna-like bus, a CS is not that bad.

maja00 · 19/07/2013 14:37

But it has the same amount of sugar as pure juice, or an innocent smoothie, and people seem to see those as acceptable. Not that much more than formula milk.

Callmedreckly · 19/07/2013 14:37

Exactly why I asked gordy!

WandaDoff · 19/07/2013 14:38

It is a very hot day, she gave her child a drink. Hmm

MrsBungle · 19/07/2013 14:39

Maybe the mother needed a drink for her baby and maybe she's heard mineral water is no good so she gave baby some orange squash.

Or maybe she just gave him some orange squash. This really is not shocking.

I agree, pure juice is just as bad. Milk and water are the only drinks that I would give between meals. (Milk has a different kind of sugar which is broken down in the stomach not the mouth so is safe for teeth)

kooksi · 19/07/2013 14:41

Really, a mother giving her baby a drink shocked you? .. wow

willyoulistentome · 19/07/2013 14:41

My kids get Capri sun in their lunch boxes every day. What's the issue with it? I'm asking genuinely as i though it was fine? You get told to put FRUIT in lunchboxes. What's so bad about fruit juice then? Neither child has an fillings.

maja00 · 19/07/2013 14:42

If milk sugar isn't bad for teeth, why are we advised to brush teeth after milk and not give it in bottles after a year?

JedwardScissorhands · 19/07/2013 14:43

A Capri sun? Seriously, that was all?? Not even a fruit shoot?

IamTheYoniOnly · 19/07/2013 14:44

From around 12 months I use to freeze Capri suns so that my dd had an ice cold drink when out and about.

VitoCorleone · 19/07/2013 14:44

People should mind their own business. So fuck if somebody elses kid is drinking a Capri Sun

Whats wrong with Capri Sun anyway?

BeanoNoir · 19/07/2013 14:46

My dd's nearly 2 and has just been really poorly with virus. Doctor at hospital said to give juice/squash/pop to give her liquids and sugar. So you'd probably have judged me if you seen her but you wouldn't actually have the full story (water and sometimes diluted fruit juice usually).

JimbosJetSet · 19/07/2013 14:46

I'd have judged too... Sorry.

foreverondiet · 19/07/2013 14:48

I probably wouldn't give but in emergency better than dehydration. Don't think I'd be shocked though.

Evian totally fine for babies, on going basis as it has low mineral content, can make formula with it but any mineral water is fine (as a one off) and preferable to dehydration!

NandH · 19/07/2013 14:50

Oh dear... Biscuit

My 2 yr old dd drinks squash and when I very very VERY rarely have cola she has a sip! I must be a bad parent

VisualiseAHorse · 19/07/2013 14:54

I am more shocked that a baby can drink from a straw at 8 months.

SoftSheen · 19/07/2013 14:56

I am quite fussy about DD's (2.4) diet but I have had to learn to chill out a bit for the last few days in order to make sure she drinks enough in the hot weather. So DD has had diluted juice, squash and strawberry milkshake... not ideal but at least she's not dehydrated or getting heatstroke.

Maybe the baby was a water refuser and the mother was simply anxious to get fluids into her. Harder to justify the 2 year old with the coke, I have to admit...

WandaDoff · 19/07/2013 15:56

I was told to give my DS1 flat coke by a Dr, he wouldn't touch the water or dioralyte & he was getting dehydrated.

ApocalypseThen · 19/07/2013 16:15

Little neffer (9 months) can drink from a straw and seems to prefer to.

Anyway, the overwhelming consensus is right. Any liquids you can get into the tinies right now is best for them.

SofaKing · 19/07/2013 16:20

My two year old ds2 drank muddy water from the boating pond yesterday. I don't think he drank any of the tadpoles though.

Do I win worst drink for a baby or toddler?

Yabu I gave my ds squash from a young age because he would only drink small amounts of water and I worried about him dehydrating. Coke isn't great but my 2 year old has has other fizzy drinks a couple of times

Emilythornesbff · 19/07/2013 16:33

Ridiculous thing to be shocked about.
Truly.

You would have shat yourself if you'd seen the lovely friendly woman in Istanbul (unbeknown to me Shock) rub a piece of Turkish delight on my 5 mo baby's gums!
I had to laugh even as I was backing away.

Although. Was this baby wearing a headband? That might make all the difference.

I don't know. I was a bit worried about DS drinking from his paddlingpiddling pool. He seems ok!
