To be shocked that a woman is feeding her baby..

...a Capri Sun orange carton on the bus? The baby cannot be any older than 8 months. And the other day on the bus I saw a woman give her 2 year old a bottle of coke to drink. I know he was 2 because he was telling me about himself!

Oh. Really.

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 19/07/2013 14:01

Just out of curiosity what would people suggest a baby gets given to drink? Obviously water is the best option but if that leaks or gets spilt or has warmed up in your bag or you just forgot it, what do you give??

Fizzy drinks obviously out.
Mineral water not suitable.

Unless you want to traipse around shops for a look warn bottle of the cow and gate water the only options in your typical newsagents fridge would be a carton of orange or apple juice or something like a caprisun.

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 19/07/2013 14:01

Luke warm

AKissIsNotAContract · 19/07/2013 14:02

I see lots of kids who are given coke from an early age. I do GA extractions of rotting primary teeth and this is the main cause.

wigglesrock · 19/07/2013 14:05

Wouldn't bother me in the slightest - you saw a thirsty child take a drink of juice Shock

My 2.5 year old had a sip of real coke today - it went with her happy meal, I cannot get worked up about what other parents feed their kids - not when it's so warm, it's the summer holidays and you've had a brief nosy.

morefalafel · 19/07/2013 14:05

I don't know where you lot live but a can of coke on a 2 year old is pretty standard here. My nephew often has it Confused and I am the crazy one for not giving DS anything that has 'a bit of flavour'.

BTW I would go into Starbucks or similar and ask for tap water if caught out rather than buy a caprisun but Im tight!

HeySoulSister · 19/07/2013 14:06

op this coming from you??? you were sat observing all this wearing no underwear according to your other thread??

wonder what the mothers of those children would have thought of you

forevergreek · 19/07/2013 14:06

I wouldn't give it , but in the heat maybe it's all she had on her and gave baby some. It's better than no drink

Babies can drink mineral water though.. The evian water as well as others have a baby symbol on the side in many countries.

CatsRule · 19/07/2013 14:12

I prefer to give my 16 month old ds milk or water but once I did give him a carton of orange as we were out, his water became warm, and he was thirsty. It didn't kill him! Capri sun wouldn't be my choice but as a one off, last resort for a thirsty child I'd give it too.

You don't know why she was giving it. The day I gave my ds a carton of orange there was maybe a few judgy people talking about me...they don't know it was a one off so maybe best not to judge so quickly!

CylonNumber6 · 19/07/2013 14:14

Why can't they have mineral water? I've never heard this one before, but then I don't have kids. Am genuinely interested to know.

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 19/07/2013 14:15

I was told because of the salt content

Oh god, I was just giving 8 month old DS a drink of water from a sports bottle outside M&S (forgot his sippy cup) and he cut his mouth on it. Cue blood everywhere, wailing, water gushing out of dropped bottle.

Maybe I should have just given him a Capri Sun, probably would have been fewer lemonwithahintofcatsbum expressions. (Thank you lovely lady who offered me a hand, if you're reading)...

spacegoat · 19/07/2013 14:20

No mineral water because the minerals can cause upset stomachs. However, I have given them to both mine when young and they were fine. But they would also swallow pool water too, and by youngest loved chewing shopping trolley's when she was teething (I wiped with an anti bac wipe).

I also sneaked a packet of sweets in their lunch box today, though, so I'm definitely a bad mother!

IRCL · 19/07/2013 14:21

Shocked? Really?

I am shocked at what some people find shocking.

Callmedreckly · 19/07/2013 14:21

Was the baby sipping from the straw or do they come in bottles now?

pianodoodle · 19/07/2013 14:21

We went for a pub roast for Father's day and forgot DD's (21 months) beaker. She can drink from a normal cup but not to the extent where I'd give her one in public (soggy dinners would ensue)

The waitress suggested a fruit shoot so she had one and drained it in a minute! I've never seen such a look of glee!

She hasn't had one since but in this heat I've been tempted to put a splash of juice in her cup just to make sure she's drinking plenty...

maja00 · 19/07/2013 14:23

Why would pure juice be any better than capri sun anyway? They have the same amount of sugar.

ThisReallyIsNotSPNopeNotAtAll · 19/07/2013 14:28

Cant get worked up about the capri sun.

The giving the 2 year old coke though?! My toddler wouldn't touch it if there wasn't any vodka in. Je has sophisticated tastes.

In all seriousness the toddler drinks fizzy pop. Shock He is yet to spontaneously combust or for his teeth to drop out of his head

DeWe · 19/07/2013 14:28

You can get "touch of juice" caprisuns, or 100% juice caprisuns too round here. The packets are pretty indistinguishable from a short distance away. I get them for my dc.

CitrusSunshine · 19/07/2013 14:29

I would say the two year old having coke is probably less healthy than the 8 month old having orange drink, but to be honest I really couldn't manage to get very upset about either of them and most certainly not "shocked"....

maja00 · 19/07/2013 14:31

What do people think is so bad about a juice drink anyway? Juice, water, sugar Confused

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 19/07/2013 14:33

In this heat there's more danger from dehydration than from a Capri sun.

gordyslovesheep · 19/07/2013 14:34

a carton ...with a teeny tiny straw...and an 8 mth old baby was sucking the tiny straw ...okay then Grin

unless she was dangling the baby out of the upstairs window at the time I fail to see the shocking aspect

AKissIsNotAContract · 19/07/2013 14:36

for me it's the sugar, but I guess I'm anal because of my job.
