to think no matter how hot it is, you should keep your shirt on in public?

Places like beaches and swimming pools excluded of course.

But walking around Tesco? I don't want to see anyone's sweaty nipples! Keep your top on!
(i'm boiling in this heat but trust me, no one wants me to whip my shirt off in the shopping centre!)

You mean 'Oh sweet Jesus I hope they have got some sunscreen on' IfNot. Wink

IfNotNowThenWhen · 18/07/2013 19:21

Er...of course sparkling. I did wonder whether I should offer to apply some, but was too polite.

Sparklingbrook · 18/07/2013 19:22

Grin IfNot. I imagine you will be checking on the progress of said houses tomorrow?

XBenedict · 18/07/2013 19:23

My 4 year old DD thoroughly disapproves! Grin

IfNotNowThenWhen · 18/07/2013 19:27

I can't avoid it as its on my usual route unfortunatly.
I may faint from the over exitement heat.

JuliaScurr · 18/07/2013 19:30

my objection to it is that men can go in public virtually naked but women are made to feel self conscious for breastfeeding
double standards

coronalover · 18/07/2013 19:31

YANBU
This really pisses me off for some reason, and I seriously don't care what the bod looks like, I don't want to be in close proximity to anyone's sweaty pits or bum cracks! It gives me the rage!

A few years ago I was in a supermarket near a beach during a heatwave and saw a couple semi-clad. He was topless and wearing shorts, she was wearing g-string bikini bottoms and a crop top [puke emoticon].

Sparklingbrook · 18/07/2013 19:33

Two things are totally different totally different Julia. I can't compare a woman breastfeeding a baby in public to a topless man in Tesco. Confused

Quenelle · 18/07/2013 19:34

There was a woman at the school gates this afternoon wearing a towel and flip flops.

I assume she had a strapless cossie on underneath. Either that out she'd just got out of the bath.

Sparklingbrook · 18/07/2013 19:37

A towel? Quenelle. Is the school on the beach? Grin

TheHandbagOfGlory · 18/07/2013 19:46

My DD, she's just 4 and at the "say what you see!" stage, saw a topless man the other day and said "wow mummy! That man has got boobies bigger than yours!!" I have very large boobies and the man did have a set that rivalled mine, it was embarrassing though.

We did see him later, with a tshirt on, and dd started "oh look mummy there's....." I shushed her so never heard what gem was coming.

Quenelle · 18/07/2013 19:50

Nope.

I'm actually starting to wonder now if she'd maybe locked herself out by accident after getting out of the shower. Who does the school run in a towel??

rosesandpirates · 18/07/2013 19:53

What I find concerning is that it is fine for women to walk around in hot pants that don't cover their ass and for men to walk around with no short on, but breast feeding in public is still relatively unseen. Our society is messed up

Sparklingbrook · 18/07/2013 19:56

But I don't understand what people wearing or not wearing in hot weather has to do with breastfeeding. Confused

rosesandpirates · 18/07/2013 20:02

It's about what 'we' do/don't find socially acceptable. Simples

KevinFoley · 18/07/2013 20:24

Please keep your clothes on people. I long for the days of elegance, hats and long everything, people dress really horribly now.

BlueStones · 18/07/2013 20:36

milbracat

I have never heard of anyone argue that it's socially acceptable for a woman to enter a supermarket with a bare chest. Ever.

I think you are confusing two separate issues. No-one is arguing that men with no shirts on are, say, "asking for it". There ARE people who claim that women in short skirts are "asking for it". When we say that women should be able to wear what they like, we mean ... without being assaulted or catcalled. I would still judge a woman who chose to walk naked in Tesco, but only on grounds of politeness. That's all we're saying about the bare-chested blokes - it's impolite.

Travelledtheworld · 18/07/2013 20:42

In the USA it is socially unacceptable for men to go bare chested away from the pool/ beach and most shops and restaurants will have a sign up which says " no shirt, no shoes, no service " !

InLoveWithDavidTennant · 18/07/2013 21:05

yanbu

i do get very Angry at the fact that if a woman went topless, she would be arrested... but thats not why i dont like it. its hot... but not THAT hot that you have to remove as much as possible. doing it in shops/cafes/or whetever really pisses me off. there is just no need

Sparklingbrook · 18/07/2013 21:25

I have seen loads of people breastfeeding in public. Confused

milbracat · 18/07/2013 22:02

Bluestones I have not heard anyone argue that it is socially acceptable for a woman to enter a supermarket with a bare chest either, and none of my posts in this thread or any other have indicated that that I have argued that it should be. Where have you got your information from?

This thread is about being shirtless (and I assumed it was men we were talking about) in PUBLIC and I would argue that a supermarket is not part of that since Tesco/ASDA/Waitrose/Sainsburys or whoever can impose what rules they like within the law. In public - ie outside, what is polite is subjective depending on the environment and perhaps on what others are doing already. We live in the North of England in a working class (but not too chavvy) neighbourhood. Its certainly not Kensington and Chelsea.

It used to be scandalous to have children out of wedlock. Now, nobody gives it a second thought.

BlueStones · 18/07/2013 23:13

Well, I'd argue that a supermarket is a VERY public place, mil! Mind you I do live in Kensington
Grin

kali110 · 19/07/2013 01:15

I dont much like people's sweat dripping onto my fresh fruit!!seriously some guy is moaning at tesco and saying they were discriminating against him cz a female manager told him to put a shirt on. He claims women can wear bikini tops, yes they were wearing tops.
What is pita btw?

ZingWidge · 19/07/2013 01:24

PITA = Pain In The Arse

Sparklingbrook · 19/07/2013 06:42

If men want to wear a bikini top that's great. Better than topless IMO kali. Grin No fuzzy nipples in the fruit and veg.
