to think no matter how hot it is, you should keep your shirt on in public?

Places like beaches and swimming pools excluded of course.

But walking around Tesco? I don't want to see anyone's sweaty nipples! Keep your top on!
(i'm boiling in this heat but trust me, no one wants me to whip my shirt off in the shopping centre!)

Sparkingbrook There's no need for men NOT to be topless either and whether they are cooler in a vest or not is for the man himself to decide - not some random women who are not likely to comply if a man was to reciprocate by deciding and saying what is not appropriate for HER to wear.

My DH has said that vest shaped tan-lines are more "common" than an even tan and consequently the top comes off to avoid that particular look.

AndHarry · 18/07/2013 15:51

YANBU. It's horrible and yes, intimidating en masse.

Lottapianos · 18/07/2013 15:55

'We as women want to be able to go out (whether on on a night out or during the day) in skimpy outfits if we want and not to be judged on it, yet want to dictate what men can wear (or not wear)'

I don't think I've ever heard a woman argue for the right to get on the bus or go to the supermarket completely topless though. It's not the same thing. Although I agree the 'ok if he's got a 6 pack' type comments are well out of order.

ZingWidge · 18/07/2013 16:07

lotta that was a joke.

hence the Grin

I'd already posted that I don't like it!
I grew up in a country where the summer is hotter and for longer so I was subjected to sweat dripping people near food and on buses for years.

as you were...

Pendeen · 18/07/2013 16:07

Oh no! What have I done?

I suppose I must circulate at the school gate tomorrow and apologise to everyone!

Oh ok. I didn't notice the Grin

ZingWidge · 18/07/2013 16:14

thanks lottaThanks

I was worried about humour failure due to hot weather...it's a thing Wink

ZingWidge · 18/07/2013 16:19

or maybe it wasn't funny in the first place.

then I'm sorry

OnTheNingNangNong · 18/07/2013 16:27

Pendeen, are you a mum at my DS' s school? I demand a full apology first thing tomorrow Wink

GobblersKnob · 18/07/2013 16:27

It makes no difference how 'good looking' the body, there are times and places when it is just not fucking appropriate to have it uncovered, am frankly baffled that some cannot see this Confused

Youhaventseenme · 18/07/2013 16:33

I saw a fab E Card on FB the other day.

In this warm weather, please dress for the body you have.

Not the body you wish you had.

Sparklingbrook · 18/07/2013 17:37

Quite You. I hadn't thought of men being topless due to not wanting tan lines. Grin

I haven't seen a topless man today. Quite a miracle I think. Two topless teenagers at the cafe. Like Pepperamis as SPs says. Grin I felt like rushing over with my Factor 50.

Khaleasy · 18/07/2013 18:04

I don't think it is appropriate for any adult to be half naked - man or woman, fit or aesthetically challenged ugly
Wear what you want in your own home, but its not appropriate in public.

You may wee/poo with the bathroom door open at home but you wouldn't in public loos would you? It's only skin!

Sparklingbrook · 18/07/2013 18:09

I think for me my DF never went out half naked, DH doesn't and neither did his Dad. It's not something they would do.

None of my neighbours do it either.

complexnumber · 18/07/2013 18:20

"I just think its grim, and not hygienic in food shops."

The 'grim' bit I can accept, but I'm not sure about the 'not hygienic' bit.

What are these people doing that clothed shoppers are not doing (or the other way round)?

Are they drying their armpits on the peaches? What are they doing?

Sparklingbrook · 18/07/2013 18:21

Chest pubes falling into the fruit and veg complex. Sad

eatyourveg · 18/07/2013 18:37

YANBU and our house rule is that no-one comes to the table at meal times with a bare chest save for babies -

SirChenjin · 18/07/2013 18:41

Always keep your top on, unless you're on the beach or at the pool, is the general rule of thumb in polite society.

AndHarry · 18/07/2013 18:53

Maybe I should go topless to take DS to nursery tomorrow. Baby DD would be like this lion :o

It's only skin after all.

GobblersKnob · 18/07/2013 19:01

eatyourveg, dh once was outraged when I wanted to eat topless at the table, was bf a very tiny ds at the time and had cracked and bleeding nipples, was as hot as today and I had just smothered them in nipple cream, couldn't bear the thought of anything touching them.

He told me to put a shirt on, I told him to fuck off and eat in the other room Grin

Sparklingbrook · 18/07/2013 19:04

Ooh Gobblers it was like this weather when DS1 was born. I sat topless at the table many a time, DS1 on one boob, cabbage on the other. Sad

IfNotNowThenWhen · 18/07/2013 19:11

Yanbu in the street\ supermarket but...today I walked past 4 houses getting building work done, and at each site there was a really HOT builder or roofer, shirtless and Woking hard. I dont mean adonis gym bunny types, but that kind of fit body you get from lots of manual labour, all bronzed from working outdoors.
I think by the last lot I was forced to ogle, I may have said " oh sweet Jesus" out loud.
Sorry, what was the question again?
