to think no matter how hot it is, you should keep your shirt on in public?

Places like beaches and swimming pools excluded of course.

But walking around Tesco? I don't want to see anyone's sweaty nipples! Keep your top on!
(i'm boiling in this heat but trust me, no one wants me to whip my shirt off in the shopping centre!)

I was at the Serpentine today. Looking at the beautiful scene of water, children, boats, art... lovely. Except for one bloke with his shirt off , right on the edge of the water, at lunch with his leg up on another chair, view right up the shorts . As my elderly mother said, "lovely view, except for that man's boobs".

pumpkinsweetie · 17/07/2013 21:51

Completely agree op, sick of the sight of obese men waving their naked jelly torsos about, do they have no pride, especially when ferouisley sweating all over their childs buggy outside a school, eergh just eergh.
I'm no oil painting of a lady and i'm overweight but all my unsightlys are hid away so i expect men like this to have a bit more respect!

alemci · 17/07/2013 21:58

I dont think shirtless is a good look.

Pixel · 17/07/2013 22:25

Seeing topless cycle man made me wince. Imagine coming off your bike. Ouch.

Sparklingbrook, you are lucky, I was accidently subjected to the naked cycle ride the other weekend. Oh the horror. When you see a lobster- red fat bloke on a bike with his willy dangling you know he doesn't make a habit of cycling and is just taking the opportunity to flash his bits. Still, I don't suppose any of his mates will ever ask to borrow his bike Wink.

Sparklingbrook · 17/07/2013 22:29

OMG Pixel you will never unsee that. How odd. Hope he had some Factor 30 on.

Pixel · 17/07/2013 22:33

I know, I keep getting horrible flashbacks whenever I see a bike! The women weren't too bad as you couldn't see much but men seem to insist on cycling with their legs open . Not sure how they are allowed to get away with it tbh when the 'naked rambler' keeps getting put in jail but there you go.

JADS · 17/07/2013 22:43

YANBU.

My fil allways had his shirt off in the sun when he was young. He died of skin cancer last year in his early 60s, a guy who was otherwise super fit, ate healthily and rarely drank.

Just cover up, your life could depend on it.

moominmaiden · 17/07/2013 22:48

I don't understand why it is perfectly acceptable to to call beer bellies and such disgusting when talking about men. If I was to complain about women with flabby arms wearing vest tops then you'd all be up in arms.

It's interesting how many people have commented that they would be perfectly happy for them to go topless if they had a six pack.

Hmm
IamMummyhearmeROAR · 17/07/2013 22:48

At the school I taught at many years back, fathers would turn up bare chested for Parents' Night on warm summer evenings.

Notcontent · 17/07/2013 22:59

Yes, I spotted some bikini tops on the school run. I have to say I was a little surprised. I come from a very hot country and have never come across that....
Have also spotted lots of very casual outfits at work. I think when it gets hot in the UK people get confused about what is appropriate.

Wbdn28 · 17/07/2013 23:11

YANBU

SquinkiesRule · 17/07/2013 23:42

Don't think I want hairy sweaty bodies dripping over my veg either.
Are you all saying UK food shops allow bare chested men to shop?
Are there no "No shoes, No Shirt, No service." signs on every door?
I live near a lake, lots of summer campers and boaters, they are turned away if they come in shirtless. Bikini tops and shorts are allowed though.
Babies in strollers are not expected to have shoes, they aren't walking about usually.
Even my friends 12 year old was refused entry when managed to come shopping with no shoes, how the hell a 12 year old forgets shoes is beyond me. But I agree with the policy.

SamHamwidge · 17/07/2013 23:59

Don't like it at all. In fact I think it looks quite threatening especially when it's 2 or 3 shirtless blokes walking together. It looks aggressive. Should be a law against it!

Sparklingbrook · 18/07/2013 06:42

Yes it does look aggressive en masse Sam that's true.

Moomin beer bellies fine by me I just don't expect to see a naked one while shopping. There are certain areas that should be covered unless on the beach/at the pool etc.

ExcuseTypos · 18/07/2013 06:56

I hate it. Get your bloody clothes on.

Growlithe · 18/07/2013 07:03

I don't care if they have fit or flabby bodies. Just put it away. I also agree with the PPs friend that it is a show of complete arrogance. I was going to say 'male' arrogance but I think the women in bikini tops are the same.

SchrodingersFanny · 18/07/2013 07:15

I don't want to see large quantities of anyone's flesh tbh. The British seem incapable of dressing appropriately in hot weather. I have seen too many naked bellies and flabby thighs. I am overweight, but try to dress appropriately. The sight of most people in short shorts, or what can only be described as a body boob tube is too much.

Chivetalking · 18/07/2013 07:21

Years back (think around the early to mid 70's) I can remember my mother being furious with my brother for walking home from school with his shirt off. He must have been around ten and it was one of those localised-to-particular-schools fads with all the boys thinking it was a good idea Hmm

Men and boys just didn't then. I've always wondered if it was related to the rise of the package holiday and Brits absorbing the tiny speedos and gold chain culture round the European hotspots.

I have had my eyes seared by the sight of budgie smugglers and nothing else at all striding the high street but fortunately for those of a nervous disposition (probably all of us) that particular look seems to have stayed rare. If this weather keeps up though, who knows? Maybe we're getting off lightly Shock

Ledkr · 18/07/2013 07:22

The only good thing about seeing people's flabby bits is that it makes you feel a lot better about your own Grin

Onroute66 · 18/07/2013 07:33

Yanbu, someone guy round here keeps doing the school run topless.

Chopstheduck · 18/07/2013 07:36

yanbu, I've seen it on the school run too.

I also object to our neighbour going shirtless in his garden, with his massive belly hanging out. Which would be fair enough really, except they told me that they objected to neighbours sunbathing in bikinis 'Oh we don't really like that sort of thing...'

Rosa · 18/07/2013 07:40

Yanbu at all.. Its rude IMO other day town centre guy in 3/4 shorts and no shirt in Boots . It would be an offence if I walked in in my knickers .

ZingWidge · 18/07/2013 07:44

YANBU

well I don't mind a teenager on a bike ( although I cringe at the thought of him falling off and no protection to skin) or younger kids out and about.

but adults keep your tops/shirts on.

Abra1d · 18/07/2013 07:47

I think it's awful. And it usually tells me all I need to know about the men I see doing it: avoid.
