not to buy summer clothes 'till summer arrives?

Went shopping yesterday, admittedly in Crapsville (it's where I live), to get some summery tops and dresses for dcs and me, only to find the shops half empty. Few crappy bits of sale stuff and the start of the autumn but not a lot else. Next had even taken lots of its display racks out.

Considering most people go on hols in August, is everyone else freakishly organised? Do you all buy clothes months ahead? I never know what size my dds will be!

I've ended up trawling the boden sale and spending £££ when all I wanted was a few cheap things!

Primark and asda still have lots of summer stock out where I am.

FIFIBEBE · 17/07/2013 17:42

M & S had 5 pairs of linen trousers left on Monday, when I asked about the whereabouts of more, I was told all the autumn stuff was coming in now.

Geeklover · 17/07/2013 17:51

I get caught by this every year. I can't afford to buy shorts and things if we are going to end up with bloody snow in August and the summer stuff wasted.
We must be weird wanting to buy weather appropriate clothing when we are actually on the season itself. I think it must be weirder in England who aren't even on school holidays yet.

aldiwhore · 17/07/2013 17:53

This is one thing that makes me angry beyond red mist.

I don't want to THINK about Autumn yet!

ladymontdore · 17/07/2013 18:03

Glad it isn't just me! I'm sure the shops are missing sales by stopping selling holiday stuff three weeks before everyone leaves, although I do understand they don't want lots of stuff left over.

I'm same - desperate to buy some summer clothes but too late! I refuse to look at autumn clothes in August!!

fatlazymummy · 17/07/2013 18:28

I find this very annoying and wish the shops didn't do it . I needed to buy some new boots in March as it was still bloody freezing, I couldn't buy any as our shops had already started stocking summer clothes.
It's got worse over the last couple of years as winter has lasted longer and summer seems to last till October. I find it even harder buying for my kids because I'm not psychic so I can't predict what size they will be in 6 months time.
Sort it out, buyers.

ceramicunicorn · 17/07/2013 18:31

Does my head in too. Needed to buy ds some thick trousers in March when it was snowing and the shops were just full of shorts. Now in July it's 32 degrees and all you can buy are jeans and woolly jumpers.

littlewhitebag · 17/07/2013 18:33

I want to buy shorts for my holidays and cannot find any anywhere. So annoying. It is boiling here. Why do I want autumn clothes?

mumofthemonsters808 · 17/07/2013 18:36

New Look, Sainsburys, Asda all still have summer clothes. It's ridiculous how far ahead the shops operate.

TheCatIsUpTheDuff · 17/07/2013 19:36

I'm having the same problem with maternity clothes. I have a choice of New Look,Mothercare and Mamas and Papas in the next town, about 12 miles away, and didn't want to buy too much summer stuff in case the weather wasn't fit to wear it. Now the weather's here, most of the size 12s have gone.

RobotBananas · 17/07/2013 19:39

I desperately need some summer maternity clothes but theres nothing anywhere. I don't want a fucking jumper, its 30C. Grrr

Tittypulumpcious · 17/07/2013 19:40

I agree, went shopping for summer stuff a few weeks ago to find just a few crappy tops in size tiny on the sale racks..however in my size were jumpers, coats and winter dresses. WTAF. It's bloody July why can't we buy summer clothes in sodding summer? I don't want to buy them in February I want to buy jumpers then because it's still bloody winter!!

BadgersRetreat · 17/07/2013 19:43

oh this drives me mad too. I need a new winter coat and just know i'll have to go shopping for the bloody thing in September when it's still bloody boiling Angry

KobayashiMaru · 17/07/2013 19:44

Summer arrived months ago, its practically autumn now! Who waits til mid july to buy shorts?

FinallySaidMama · 17/07/2013 19:46

Yep, had a mooch round M&S whilst waiting for my Nan to get her shopping and all Autumnal stuff! Jumpers and boots Angry

Nanny0gg · 17/07/2013 19:48

Try ASOS.

Tittypulumpcious · 17/07/2013 19:49

Summer didn't arrive months ago, it's been pissing down and freezing up until a few weeks ago!

TooTabooToBoo · 17/07/2013 19:50

Summer arrived months ago

I think we still had snow in May?

Who waits til mid july to buy shorts?

The British Grin. We normally get a week of short-worthy weather in July and then if we're lucky another week and weekend (not together - separated) in August.

I was on the verge of moaning about the heat earlier, then I realised I needed to shut up Grin

Lj8893 · 17/07/2013 19:51

Shops don't want to be full of leftover summer stock that they can't sell once autumn hits though. And vice versa.

I've seen plenty of summer clothes in the shops still, and the majority are in the sale which is a bonus!

Yes, they are selling out quick but then no shop could have predicted this heatwave.

KobayashiMaru · 17/07/2013 19:52

Summer starts when it starts, irrespective of the weather! 1st of May.

You might have had snow in May, I know I didn't.

GrimmaTheNome · 17/07/2013 19:54

Oh bugger... I'm planning on going shopping tomorrow, including for a swimming cossie or two, being 2/3 of the way through the shred and feeling in better shape.

Oh, and the other thing about swimming costumes? Do shops not realise that people swim in pools all year round and we don't all want sports type speedo things, and so if we wreck the ones we've got while on holiday we may want to buy some in September?

EndoplasmicReticulum · 17/07/2013 19:56

Yes, you have to be that organised that not only do you know what size everyone will be in 6 months time, you also need to predict the weather.

Not sure we had snow in May but we did have sleet.

Last year we didn't really get out of jumpers. This year need shorts!

You have to buy school uniform before they break up or there won't be any left.

caroldecker · 17/07/2013 20:18

Shops have to order clothes 3-6 months in advance as they are made in China (generally) - they therfore have to guess the stock they need - they obviously understocked this year following a couple of years when no-one wanted anything cos too damn cold. Most shops wish they had more summer stuff in

Eastpoint · 17/07/2013 20:24

Summer doesn't start on 1st May. Summer starts on 22/23 June in the UK. Don't you remember the old saying 'Cast ne'er a clout till May be out'?
