AIBU?

To think that the British just don't know how to dress for summer?

Me included.

During the heat wave, I don't think I've seen a single person dressed nicely/appropriately. Same when I've been abroad. I fully accept that it might just be where I live/go on holiday, btw.

I just don't think that the British can do summer clothes very well. Maybe because we don't get that much of it? And what is this thing for men wandering around public areas without a top on? When did that become acceptable?! Confused You don't see the men of Greece or Italy wandering around the streets without a top. It makes for grim viewing.

Am I being a miserable twat?

I saw a group of teenage girls yesterday, walking 4 abreast down the high street, strutting their stuff, it was hilarious as they'd all obviously used the same (extremely dark and shiny) instant bronzer all over and they were wearing those tiny denim shorts Mad and crop tops. It was like a line of pepperamis walking down the street Grin

EXACTLY Coco.

It's irrelevant what the body type is. I would recoil at even Ryan Gosling if he was schlepping about the streets without his top.

WHY?! Why do men think that it is OK? It is not OK, men. It is not OK to look like you have forgotten an important item of clothing.

LOL at how Ryan Gosling is the benchmark for men on this thread Grin

I thought 'You have never been on Mumsnet have you?#"

Actually just roared Grin

What's with the arse cheeks hanging out of denim shorts? Makes me turn into Mary Whitehouse when I see them. Next year you'll be no one unless your actual piss flaps are on view.

Ok Mary, probably never used the term 'piss flaps'.

And men in flip flops, my brain can barely process the horror

Squoosh I may have the answer to this problem. My puppy loves to chew flip flops. We could round up all the flip flopped men, perhaps offer them a go on a bouncy castle. When they are bouncing around I could set the pup on the flip flops if he gets 1 of each pair it would be a start

I know how to dress in warm weather - but I don't spend money on lots of summer clothes as we get so few hot days so I can struggle.

Yesterday I had on knee-length khaki shorts and a floaty white top with white sandals... now that top's in the wash I'm in a normal tshirt which isn't as smart or as cool.

I'm 39 weeks pg, so just getting dressed is worthy of admiration Grin I'm down to 2 suitable outfits that fit, including one dreaded maxi. 2 yr old DD has it sorted though - she just wants to run around the garden naked.

So what is the consensus on short people wearing a maxi dress, I have wanted a naice for ever but I'm only 5ft and fear I would look like a child that had played dress up in an adults clothing. Is it possible to pull it off?

Its all about dressing appropriately for the weather AND your figure AND what you're doing.

I would no sooner wear a boob tube and denim cut offs in the privacy of my own garden today than I would in the middle of winter - I don't have the figure for it but I'm preggers so have an excuse Equally, even if I had a Kate Moss frame, I wouldn't wear boob tube and denim cut offs in Harvey Nichols or the office. But I might wear that at a festival (if I had the figure).

A lot of British people don't know how to dress full stop, but at least in the winter people tend to hide their fat rolls and don't have lobster skin!

Cotton or linen trousers or knee length skirts are a god-send in the heat!

Definately agree re men in flipflops

My DH insists on wearing them despite my best efforts to convince him not to. He has horrible gnarly, hairy toes. My feet aren't objects of beauty but I do shave my hairy big toes before inflicting them on the world Grin

I am about to go out. Dreading it because I hate the heat. I will be wearing a West African printed loose tunic and a loose maxi skirt.

I will look like an ill-defined pile of laundry, but it's all I can bear to wear to keep my body cool.

Short people in maxi dresses, it can work, but make sure it's not too long or too billowy or you will end up looking like Yoda from Star Wars.

Hopefully not facially though.

I just woke the baby with my snort @ MrsD [grin[

I'm fat, hot and breastfeeding. There are no summer clothes in my wardrobe.

I just went to Asda and bought a black, shorts, playsuit (think that's what its called) and a maxi-dress.

I probably look a sight but other than walking naked down the street, ive no other option [sadface]

No, Feegle that's LOVELY. Very '70s. I would wear that.

You have to remember it's a combination of fabric, hideous prints and cut that is irking me.

DH also wears flip flops. Ones that are two sizes too big for him Confused so he ends up tripping all over the joint, as well as looking like a Hobbit dressed for Ipanema (he has very hairy feet)

Now I don't normally judge what people where but there was a man probably late 40's or early 50's wearing sort denim shorts and no top with a belly piercing.
I meanwhile am wearing a classic summer dress.
