To think that the British just don't know how to dress for summer?

Me included.

During the heat wave, I don't think I've seen a single person dressed nicely/appropriately. Same when I've been abroad. I fully accept that it might just be where I live/go on holiday, btw.

I just don't think that the British can do summer clothes very well. Maybe because we don't get that much of it? And what is this thing for men wandering around public areas without a top on? When did that become acceptable?! Confused You don't see the men of Greece or Italy wandering around the streets without a top. It makes for grim viewing.

Am I being a miserable twat?

There were a few people with backless dresses with their bras showing. Doesn't wearing a bra with a backless dress defeat the object of wearing a backless dress?

Depends how old you are. I'm middle-aged and it seems wrong to me but it's fine with young people today. I now leave my pretty bra straps showing but I don't feel entirely comfortable with it.

probably a heroin addict, you can spot them in the heat, the ones wearing jumpers and overcoats.

And old people. Old people wear coats and hats in a heatwave. Of course, age is no bar to drug addiction. I'm going to look at them in a different light from now on.

Unless a backless dress goes down all the way down, most backless dresses only show bras if the bras are the wrong back size. :)

the heat went to my head today and bought a long dress.. tshirt material, simple, nice to waft around in. At home I noticed that 'my hips don't lie'
how can I hide my hips bulging? on a long straight plain dress???
Summer style + me = bonfire material

below knee shorts are the greatest thing ever for me - I have never had the legs for anything shorter whatever my weight.

although from yesterday's photo, a looser top or a little less eating would have been better. However I have just discovered how to tinker with the photo!

T-shirt material is clingy, because of the way it's woven.
You need hang straight material, choc.

You may also need something that isn't straight, but has a bit of a waist.

it was in the sale, I'm such a pear shape it's loose round my chest, then tight on my hips/butt

Today was 29 deg here. I have a selection of knee length dresses, one sleeveless navy polka dot, pink with zip front, etc. Shorts with sleeveless blouse, flatforms, and wedges. I look fucking fabulous so ner!
And yes to addicts still wearing hot clothes. I had the dubious honour of seeing one today who had soiled herself through her trackies, and vommed on her jumper. Felt most sorry for her, truly.

I'm tempted by this, rather.

Freudian, it's not about the colour but the shape. :)
The top doesn't look too big to fill.

But, anyway, something that defines the waist, but leaves room for the hips.

Maxi dresses can look fab but only if you are wearing the right underwear. I am seeing loads of low droopy boobs and VPL. Please girls do the 360 degree check and wear a good fitting smooth full cup bra. Your underwear really can make all the difference. Alicia x

I think one problem is that we don't have a long enough summer for people to find it orthwhile investing in a decent wardrobe so they just chuck on what they wore last year in Majorca! Flip flops, cheap vests - all fine on the beach, on the tube? No thanks.

I was on a beach in dorset the other day and out of all the people there, it was a woman in her sixties whose outfit I coveted the most. She looked so much more elegant yet comfy than the clothes I saw most of the younger (very hot looking) people wearing!

Just been admiring a 80+ lady in a floral tea dress. Bright colours fresh and cool, and modern. I could've worn the same dress happily, at 50 years younger. Oh, and it looked new (think Cath Kidston), so was throughly modern looking.

Who says we can't dress for summer? I want to be her when I grow up!

It's extremely difficult to find decent summer clothes in the British shops.

T-shirts (and anything made of jersey) are exceedingly unflattering in the heat.

Just so you all know, today I'm wearing 3/4 length stone coloured cargo shorts/trousers, a grey long vest top and a cropped nave thin cardi.... Hope it doesn't cause offence, none of my wobbly bits are showing! Wink

I'm wearing a lovely flowery dress, big print.

I keep almost crashing the car looking at people after this thread. I almost complimented a lady in Tesco today on her dress Blush
