AIBU?

To think that the British just don't know how to dress for summer?

Me included.

During the heat wave, I don't think I've seen a single person dressed nicely/appropriately. Same when I've been abroad. I fully accept that it might just be where I live/go on holiday, btw.

I just don't think that the British can do summer clothes very well. Maybe because we don't get that much of it? And what is this thing for men wandering around public areas without a top on? When did that become acceptable?! Confused You don't see the men of Greece or Italy wandering around the streets without a top. It makes for grim viewing.

Am I being a miserable twat?

Feegle that dress is lovely, very 70's
I love those Warehouse dresses too that Twatters linked too.
I tend to sick to skirts and a top, they are more forgiving. I bought a load of Laura Ashley linen skirts in the sale a few years ago and wear therm with a plain white top. You can't see sweat strains on white Blush
Classy, me.

I think there is some degree of double standards too. Men who have a beer belly feel perfectly fine getting it out inpublic but if a women over a certain size put on a boob tube and let her stomach hang out she would be vilified.

I never dress for the summer and have no summer clothes so to speak. I just try and stay as cool and covered as possible.

I'm a big fan of the current fash for long vest dresses, ie vest shaped at the top, but ankle length. Superdry have nice ones in, but the one I bought is plain black from Asda.

It does need big knickers to smooth the hips, but other than that, v comfy, cool and forgiving whilst being dignified and stylish too.

If it's sunny in Friday I hate to see the state of some of the inhabtants of my town. It's the Orange parades, copious amounts of cider and lying around in the sun in spaghetti strapped tops, or topless for the men Shock.
By 3pm it'll look like there's been a spillage of prawns on grassy areas.

Drunken, angry prawns.

You know what I hate the most? Men with no tops on or vest tops who reach across you in a shop for something and dangle their sweaty, hairy armpits in your face. Bleugh.

YABU. I think it's just too expensive to maintain a summer wardrobe. It's hot only for 2 weeks or so in the UK. I think a lot of people have the same summer wardrobe for many years. I'm sure British do know what to wear, if given unlimited money/time/space to actually have a summer wardrobe for 28+ degree temperature.

I find Summer dressing tricky. I'm a 10/12 but only 5 ft 5 so maxi dresses make me look like a dalek, linen trousers look frumpy and as for strapless tips exposing mummy arms - forget it.

I tend to go for the knee length skirt, fitted T or long sleeved fitted shirt combo. I do rolled up jeans too but not when it's this hot. I love dresses but they always expose do much shoulder, arm and back. If they have sleeves I end up looking like I'm going to work.

I struggle and OP YADNBU.

I keep my summer clothes in a suitcase. If its hot, they come out. If not, it takes me about 5 minutes to pack for a holiday Grin

Linens, leggings, tunics, maxis, three quarter length trousers, vest tops, knee length dresses, sorted.

Today I am mostly wearing wafty silk skirt. I have enough sleeve to not offend with my fadubadas.

I have seen a few folk wearing coats today, I shit you not. If you poked a meat thermometer in the midriff area, they'd probably be done to about medium rare.

Oh I really like that dress, Peace. Envy

I'd LOVE to be able to wear dresses like that. I love sixties fashions but they are not cut for my fat bod.

If you like things like that and you say you are skinny/pale, I am imagining a Jane Birkin type of lady. That frock would look smashing on you. You cow. Wink

"There are midlength dresses with wafty sleeves to be had in Debenhams Mantaray department, Marmalade, but the prints they come in may offend your sensibilities"

Oh crikey. I caught myself looking at the Mantaray department last week and thinking "Hmmm that looks comfy"

I'm old, weary and feeble and only go out to walk my little furry dog in the fields and walks 3 times a day. But I know how to dress to stop me passing out.

Braless so ribs and upper stomach free to expand to be able to breathe.
wide loose sleeves and body in viscose/elastane which drapes away from the skin and moves as you walk, thus creating more air movement for the skin . Thin viscose/elastane leggings, sun cap.
Walk in a relaxed leisurely manner.
Do everything in that manner - no rushing around.
Have my shopping home delivered.
Drink loads as always thirsty in the heat, but cold drinks not hot.
Fizzy drinks do not quench your thirst - plain water is best.

Looking at the ASOS site these are nice summer dresses in different styles:

grecian
jersey
midi1
midi2

You want light fabrics, in cotton or linen, preferably flowy and loose, in light colours.
Jeans are not good enough.
Avoid leggins.
And try not to bear a lot of skin, particularly if standing in the sun. You'll need some shade.

For trousers: these, although not in white, or these

I think I look quite suitably dressed for this weather, I'm still very warm but that's because I'm pregnant. If I wasent pregnant my outfit would be nice and cool for me.

I'm wearing a grey jersey maxi skirt and a white embroidered t-shirt. No lumps and bumps showing (apart from the huge one in front!!) and I'm a size 18 so hiding my lumps and bumps is never easy!

I've had several compliments on my outfit today which is nice.

I have seen some lovely dressed people in this weather, I have equally seen some right frights!!!!

A skirt - patterned, not short, on the knee, its a bit sticky outy. T-shirt - clingy, not tight - with just a hint of sleeves and a wide but not low neck, flesh coloured flats. Going to put sandals on when my toe nail polish has had some attention. (you did ask)

I'm a bit tanned but no burn.
