to think that there can’t actually be people out there who justify paying £400 plus for a kitchenaid food mixer?

just received a load of special offers from qvc for kitchenaid products. there are items such as

toasters for £295. coffee makers for £615. Food mixers upwards of £400 up to as much as £700! Shock

Surely nobody in their right mind actually pays those kinds of obscene prices? Grin

I've got one . Yes I paid about £400 quid for it . And you know what ? I'm not even going to bother to justify it , because I don't have to .

If you want to spend your money on a £20 mixer , good for you . You must obviously be in your right mind .

Southeastdweller · 08/07/2013 16:41

I think that with most things you get what you pay for and the testimonies on this thread and on the other KitchenAid ones about these mixers speak for themselves. I would love one and whilst I don't regard one as a fashion statement, I'm not embarrassed to admit I partly covet one because they look divine - I don't ever buy ugly or dull looking stuff.

LadyIsabellaWrotham · 08/07/2013 16:41

I rejected a Kitchen Aid in favour of a Magimix a few years ago because of the increased functionality, but you lot are almost selling it to me ..... If only I had the space.

fluffyraggies · 08/07/2013 16:43

I have a KitchenAid!

It's cream and i loves it. It's powerful, easy to use and looks luurvly.

DDs and i go through spells of using it daily, if we're in a baking mood, or sometimes it sits for a few days without being used. It's always on the work top so it's easy to chuck in the ingredients for Yorkshire pud, pancakes, scones, a quick lemon cake or whatever. The most basic thing i do with mine is the mash if there's loads of us. Makes it creamy and fluffy.

I had some cash to splash when i bought it, had always hankered after one, had no mixer before - all hand whisking, and i don't begrudge a penny. Don't drink much, don't smoke, don't do shoes and handbags over the 20 quid mark - so - why not? I'm hoping it'll see me out and be passed on the which ever DD grabs it first [grin}

Mine was a wedding present from my mother. 11 years ago, and still going strong. I love it, it looks great and works like a dream. £400 bloody well spent.

Technotropic · 08/07/2013 16:44

We went on a Dualit frenzy a while back:

4 slice original toaster - check.
Matching coffee machine - check.
Matching architect kettle - check.

The toaster was the most expensive (£200) but is possibly the best domestic toaster about.

I'm not sure about £400 for a mixer but each to their own. It's all down to what you value shirley. If kitchen appliances/gadgets are your thing then great.

The money I have spent in the last five or six years on buying cheap mixers that have died on me after a year's use would have bought me a KitchenAid. I would love one.

Mama1980 · 08/07/2013 16:56

My mum bought me a kitchenaid 6 years ago for a housewarming present. It's still going strong as is her kenwood that she got as a wedding present 30 odd years ago, that's why people buy them.

I love my KitchenAid and use it about three times a week.

Why do you think it's an 'obscene' amount of money? What should a KitchenAid cost?

If you think it's immoral, where should that money be going?

sparkle12mar08 · 08/07/2013 17:11

My MIL was given a second hand Kenwood Chef as a wedding present in 1972, which despite being second hand, was still a very generous gift indeed. It was about 15 yo then she thinks. It finally gave up the ghost this year - it's lasted over 55 years! I doubt the current equivalent will last 50-60 years, but I'd hope to get at least 20 out of one.

Notcontent · 08/07/2013 17:13

I have one and expect to have it for a very long time.

I think in the past people were used to big items like that being expensive - so people used to save up for a long time for new items and would buy few of them
Now people expect to be able to buy lots of stuff really cheaply.

MrsTerryPratchett · 08/07/2013 18:03

I have one but I waited and bought the floor model so it was less than half price. It is fantastic, I use it at least twice a week and I love it. I'm sure it will outlive me.

MrsTerryPratchett · 08/07/2013 18:05

Also, I know of two relationship break-ups where the man kept the KitchenAid, even though he never used it, because he knew how much the female partner loved it.

Absolutmum · 08/07/2013 18:07

I have A Kitchen Aid mixer. My justification is that I wanted it, I worked hard to earn the money to buy it and I use it regularly.
So there!

Crikeyblimey · 08/07/2013 18:08

Yep - I've got one (cream). I love it. Worth every penny.

I can't understand people paying similar for a handbag but hey, folk are different and isn't that a really good thing?

NettoSuperstar · 08/07/2013 18:20

I fully intend to buy one when I have enough money.
I love them, and I will use it, I cook all the time.

AntoinetteCosway · 08/07/2013 18:27

I am desperate for a good food processor but money is tight at the mo. I am thinking of saving for a Magimix Le Mini but would sell a kidney for a KA with all the attachments.

cuttingpicassostoenails · 08/07/2013 18:33

I have a Kitchen Aid. It is not a fashion statement.

RoxyFox211 · 08/07/2013 18:53

I agree with you, wouldn't catch me spending that on a toaster with people starving in the world but at the same it is up to the people buying it, can't be doing with people being judged all the times for their choices. We all have our little luxuries I guess, some peoples are more extravagant than others

Scruffey · 08/07/2013 19:00

There are loads of people with loads of money - just go to a posh part of your city and look at the cars driving around. We went to a part of our city that we have never been to in the evening last week to do something and we felt like we should be scrubbing the shoes of the people there! They could certainly afford the a few hundred quid for kitchen stuff.

IfIonlyhadsomesleep · 08/07/2013 19:06

I love mine. At the time we bought it, ten years ago, we had disposable income and were not extravagent in other ways. I wouldn't have gone into debt for it, but I use it a lot and enjoy looking at it in my kitchen daily. I fully intend to have bit in use for decades.

Plenty of people spend extravagent amounts or money on gadgets or hobby gear. This is no different. I may not understand expensive bikes, for example, but I get why people who like cycling buy them. It's their thing. This is mine.

RhondaJean · 08/07/2013 19:15

I love my kitchen aid. It's one of the best things I ever bought.

However after years of buying £100-Ish kettles which never lasted put the year, I went in a strop and spent £17 on one in the sale three and a half years ago and it's still going strong. Looks okay too.

I don't know where that leavesme really...

EeyoreIsh · 08/07/2013 19:19

I did. I love baking. I saved up lots of vouchers and money I'd received as presents, and bought one in the sale.

It's great, it should last for years. I would much rather have bought this than have random presents I didn't really want.

So it's not about splashing the cash. It's about investing in something I enjoy.

Compared to some hobbies, it's really quite a reasonable price to pay. especially compared to how much we've spent making this house habitable

didireallysaythat · 08/07/2013 19:48

At the risk of sounding stupid, what do you do everyday with a mixer ? I think I must be missing something but I honestly don't know what you do with one. I have my grandmother's 1950 Kenwood thing which comes out of the attic once a year to make the madeira birthday cake but then it goes back.

I think I'm missing something. I shall look up magimix books on Amazon.

MrsTerryPratchett · 08/07/2013 19:58

OK, things I regularly make with my KitchenAid... Pizza dough, I hate kneading. Pancake batter, quick and easy. Anything that mixes something thin or acid with something thick or greasy, like this. Whisking eggs, making anything where you should be stirring constantly, avgolemono soup for example. Lots of things. It's as easy to clean as a whisk or spoon and bowl so why not?
