to think that there can’t actually be people out there who justify paying £400 plus for a kitchenaid food mixer?

just received a load of special offers from qvc for kitchenaid products. there are items such as

toasters for £295. coffee makers for £615. Food mixers upwards of £400 up to as much as £700! Shock

Surely nobody in their right mind actually pays those kinds of obscene prices? Grin

If you can afford it and are actually going to use it regularly, I don't see why not.

About 10 years ago I managed to find an original early 1950's Kenwood chef. It works brilliantly, has all the mincing and other attachments too. The modern kitchen aid looks a lot like it in terms of style.

My sister has asked me to leave it to her in my will Grin.

SsimTee · 08/07/2013 13:21

I don't drink, I don't smoke. I hardly ever go out. I'm not interested in clothes, shoes, handbags, etc. So if i want a £400 KitchenAid I just go out and buy it without giving it a second thought to be honest. I'm not a spender, I've saved my money all my life and I buy things that give ME joy. If anybody dares to comment, I happily point out where they could save £400 to afford a KitchenAid too. By the way, I haven't got a KitchenAid 'cos my kitchen isn't finished yet and I dont' know what colour will I want when it's all done.

BubaMarra · 08/07/2013 13:26

I LOVE KitchenAid.
My mum bought her Kenwood almost 30 years ago, still going strong.

gallifrey · 08/07/2013 13:33

we spent £800 on a coffee machine! I have had cars that cost less than that! Makes bloody lovely coffee tho Grin Grin

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 08/07/2013 13:35

And the kids benefit too :) bake sales at school -10 mins and a lemon drizzle cake knocked up, job done. Not to
Mention home made rolls and muffins for their lunch box. Mums happy, kids happy, win win :o

Morloth · 08/07/2013 13:53

I have one, it is pretty and does a great job.

Happily I am in a position where £500 is not very much to me.

EatingAllTheCrumpets · 08/07/2013 13:56

YABU

I have just bought one Grin

I bought it because;

  1. I've wanted for ages
  2. I bake all the time and have gone through 3 £100 ones in the last 4 years
  3. its beautiful!!

I agree it's a lot of money, but that's what I go to work for!

FishCalledWonder · 08/07/2013 13:59

My red Kitchen Aid is beloved and beautiful. It takes up about a third of the kitchen in our tiny house. As Zachary said: priorities.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 08/07/2013 14:16

gallifrey what did you buy? Ours is on it's last legs and we are looking for a replacement.

Can't agree enough about Kenwood Chefs. I inherited my Grandma's which she was given as a wedding present over 70 years ago. I retired it when I got married and was given a Titanium - that was nearly 6 years ago and it is like new.

TheRealFellatio · 08/07/2013 14:18

I have the Kitchenaid mixer and the separate blender. Suck on that. Grin

OhDearNigel · 08/07/2013 14:20

I run a cake decorating business. I have a kitchenaid and a commercial kenwood. With 3 bowls, natch. I would not be able to function without them and they represent one of the best value for money buys I have ever made.

OhDearNigel · 08/07/2013 14:23

and I used to be a pastry chef - so life without a stand mixer is unthinkable Shock
If it was a choice between a TV and the kitchenaid, the kitchenaid would win, every time

wannaBe · 08/07/2013 14:25

tbh I think that all quality has reduced over the years though. My mum has a cheap £10 mixer that she got from her sister because she had two as wedding presents about 30 years ago and it's still working. She's only just replaced the tumble drier she had before we moved to south Africa (again 30 years ago!) and now the average washing machine is only expected to last about five years.

Things just aren't built to last any more IMO and not even just the cheap things...

There was a thread about toast racks the other day and there was a link to one which cost almost £700. Makes a kitchenaid mixer seem positively cheap with regards value for your money!

javotte · 08/07/2013 14:26

My parents bought me a professional Kitchenaid for my 30th birthday. They ordered it from the USA and my electrician husband made me an adaptator so that it could run on a European voltage.
It will probably outlive me and no £50 mixer would be powerful enough to knead big batches of bread dough every day.
Like SsimTee I don't drink smoke, go out or buy expensive clothes.

gallifrey · 08/07/2013 14:40

Alibabaandthe40nappies we have a Delonghi perfecta (ESAM5600) bean to cup.
It's lovely, wouldn't be without it now :)

afussyphase · 08/07/2013 14:44

Love mine. Got in in the US for 265$ (sale on some of the colours). I think they are generally more reasonable in the US, it's a US company. We run it on a little transformer we bought online... As for toasters, I couldn't agree more, all they have to do is heat up. Mixers have to do a lot more!

aldiwhore · 08/07/2013 14:47

My mum's Kenwood has just died after 35 years, me and my siblings are buying her a Kitchenaid, and yes, it will be around the 'silly money' mark.

She uses it though, constantly.

YABU op it's a bit like me saying "Why would anyone spend £20k on a car when mine only cost £200 and is fine". Why not?

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 08/07/2013 15:15

That is what DH wants, a bean to cup. Maybe Santa will be feeling generous Wink

IsaacCox · 08/07/2013 15:16

Yabu

Dh got me a raspberry ice kitchen aid a few months ago. I do a lot of baking (though not lately for myself as I'm on Slimming World, so it's currently mainly just a beautiful thing to look at and stroke in the kitchen)
I love it and it makes me happy. The price tag is definitely worth it, and it'll last forever.

expatinscotland · 08/07/2013 15:21

I would buy one in a heartbeat.

babybearsmummy · 08/07/2013 15:21

I'd love to upgrade my cheap Argos own £4.99 hand mixer for a kitchen aid.... one day (crosses fingers)!!

flatmum · 08/07/2013 15:25

a girl I work with paid over £1000 for a juicer!

LRDLearningKnigaBook · 08/07/2013 15:26

ohdear - this is one reason we don't have a TV. Or a microwave.

Since I'm no kind of chef this is really indulgent, but they look a damn sight nicer to me. The sight of the TV does not promise delicious, delicious carbs.

Hercy · 08/07/2013 15:27

I have one and I don't see it as burning money or a waste of money at all. It's bloody awesome and I use it every week. I imagine I'll still be using it in 30 years. Have you actually ever used one before condemning it to be a fashion statement?
