to think that there can’t actually be people out there who justify paying £400 plus for a kitchenaid food mixer?

just received a load of special offers from qvc for kitchenaid products. there are items such as

toasters for £295. coffee makers for £615. Food mixers upwards of £400 up to as much as £700! Shock

Surely nobody in their right mind actually pays those kinds of obscene prices? Grin

Did they go sort of shiny and gloopy? If so then it is the potatoes not the mixer. I had that problem a couple of weeks ago when I was making cottage pie, and it was the type of potatoes.

The best way to do mash is the drain the potatoes in a colander and leave them to stand for a couple of minutes so they are dry as wet spuds make runny mash. put them in the bowl, chop them roughly with a knife and put the mixer on. I change from the beater to the whisk when they are pretty much broken up, and add a knob of butter and splash of milk at the same time.

We don't need a lot of the things we have. Some people like shoes and have lots of pairs, or very expensive shoes. Some people like clothes, or perfume, or electronic gadgets, or cars, or holidays, or pets, or expensive wine. Some people like cake mixers.

DH bought me a kitchenaid a few years ago for my birthday.

I wanted it, we could afford it.

Problem is????

I think that you actually save a lot of money by having one and using it as much as possible to make your own food. I see these sorts of machines as lifetime investment pieces in good health.

Because I think that for many people if they did go out a lot, drank, spent lots on fashion etc then they wouldn't have the money for an expensive piece of kitchen equipment.
It's to show that their priorites (or what they like to do) are different.

This thread is so sad, why on earth are you all justifying yourselves 'oh well I never go out and I don't drink, and I wear a hair shirt and give all my money to charity so I am allowed a Kitchenaid'?

You want one, you can afford it. You buy it. End of discussion, surely?

I've bought myself a kitchenaid. I don't go out and enjoy cooking/baking. It would cost more to go on holiday and I would rather stay at home and get a kitchenaid!

OK so how do you make amazing mash in it? When I did that it got kind of tough/gluggy...

My mother's Kenwood Chef is still going strong over 50 years later.

I've wanted one all my life. I now have a small child with ASD and a DH who feels he is allergic to touching or preparing food. I love cooking and I grow a lot of my own vegetables. I have recently been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. I think I can now justify a Kenwood Chef as it will enable me to continue making my own food (I hate mass manufactured food) :)

I have a baby pink one that was released to support breast cancer care. I love it, it makes me smile whenever I see it and I use it loads. I have had it for 11 years now and is worth every single penny!

We aren't over weight either Newcupboards infant I lost a substantial amount of weight after buying the KA.

I cook mostly gluten free so i bake bread and muffins and cakes for breakfast and packed lunches most days.
I also make pasta (occasionally, I don't use eggs either so I'm not a huge fan of pasta) Pastry, tortillas, pitas/flatbreads etc.
it's also really useful for batters and dressings.

Emma - I know. They should come as standard - no idea why they don't except that it means KitchenAid can extort another £30. Worth it, though - it halves mixing time cos you don't have to faff around scraping stuff down.

What's the difference between all the lets and numbers after each model?

I don't have one but I want one, my parents are saying that they will be giving us all some money when they sell their house and I am going to buy one when they do. I have wanted one for a long time and cook from scratch so it will be worth it....I think.

ooh, thanks, stealthsquiggle! That is exactly what I need. Why doesn't it come with one of those as standard?

If someone wants one, is willing to pay that price then fair enough.

Personally I don't do enough baking or cooking to justify one. However I do think they look ace - and have heard good reports on them.

Same goes for all household appliances- some folk won't pay more than £12.99 for an argos kettle - others arehappy to pay £200 for a fancy pants design. ?

Money schmoney. I don't care how much anyone else spends - good for them if they have loads.

DP bought me one...worth every penny IMO. Far better than some of the cheaper mixers I've used and chosen based on its motor not its appearance.

I use mine everyday and not just for cakes also make pasta etc. So imo its a functional piece of equipment that happens to look nice rather than a fashion statement.

I have a kitchen aid a limited edition design one and it was worth every penny, IMO.

I bake a lot, almost daily. I make all of our bread, muffins and cakes.

I have owned many mixers, but none even come the kitchen aid.
I had a kenwood one that was good, but it didn't kneed bread very well.

I don't think I could live without my KA.

I've just 'inherited' my mums Kenwood that is older than me Grin - she's not making cakes much now, and thought it was going to waste. It works great, but I do wish it looked a little 'prettier'. Need to give my head a shake - substance over style Eve, substance over style..

My mum bought me a cherry red Kitchenaid three Christmasses ago. I couldn't believe how generous she'd been, I was quite gobsmacked. It's very beautiful but I'm not sure it's worth the money, and I feel bad for not using it all the time to somehow justify the expense.

For one thing I've had to footle about with the callibration so the beaters reach all the way to the bottom of the bowl without scraping it. But it's very sturdy, I can see myself having it for life. And is the best way to make sticky doughs like naan.
