My emotions would have kicked in big time leaving a 9 month old baby.
Doing a risk assessment wouldnt have got a look in.
We never had a baby monitor, because, leaving all the doors open, and not having a ginormous house, we could hear if anything was amiss.
Car wise. We bought cars according to car safety and budget. Nothing much else.
Perhaps posters are willing to take a higher risk than others
Perhaps they risk assess differently
Perhaps the rewards for doing or not doing something are more appealing
I disagree with you on a point Buffy. The lucky/unlucky point.
Obviously you are right to a degree.
But the whole issue isnt absolutely, purely, a matter of luck imo.
Because, if staistically, the risk of something happening is say 1/30, it is going to happen to someone who chose to take the risk for whatever reason, somewhere at some point.
I think Speros point is that the risk is so small as to not worry about it.
I think my point is that the consequences of what might happen are so large and so awful, that I personally didnt do it.
There are always 2 sides to this, the statistical likehood, and the consequence.
I always look at this issue from the consequence side.
People can parent how they want to though.
We all deal with these issues every day.
Risk assessment is a tricky subject.
