YANBU
Re the garlic bread, I've never understood it. Why would you have bread with what is essentially also bread based?
It doesn't do anything for the flavour, either, or the texture - it's completely pointless in every way, as far as I can see.

It'd be like having chips with a baked potato.

I also don't think that chips go with very many things, either, so I'd never, ever have them with pizza. I don't understand why you'd want to, regardless of the carb content.

I think my favourite thing about these sort of threads are those posters who pop up to claim that entire nations eat food exactly the same way. There's always someone claiming that because they have a friend who lived in Italy for 6 months in 1976, they are privvy to the only bolognese/ragu sauce recipe that is legally allowed in the entire country of Italy.

Well, even if the entire Italian nation spurns garlic bread served alongside pasta or pizza, I like it. It may be carb overload and it may not be the healthiest addition to a meal, but it's hardly the most unusual combination. In this country, anyway. Next time I visit Italy, I will obviously know to hide my wanton carbie ways, lest I be thrown in jail.

parttimer79 · 24/06/2013 16:52

Ok I have an Italian friend who puts potato on pizza - shall I tell her she is not allowed under MN double carb rules? Smile

BackforGood · 24/06/2013 17:02

What crinkle77 said (and others before).
Yes, YABU to think it's odd. When we first started having lots of pizza as a nation, back in the 70s, that's how pizzaland sold it - you got a slice of pizza, some salad, and some chips on your plate. Personally I find "just" pizza to be too much, I prefer some pizza as part of the whole meal on my plate.

hackmum · 24/06/2013 17:06

In Wales we have the fine concept of "half and half" whereby you order a curry or chilli served with half a portion of rice and half a portion of chips.

Don't tell the OP. Smile

massistar · 24/06/2013 17:12

When our Italian friends visited, they went home with a suitcase full of coop garlic bread ;-) I also give you the "risotto di patate", carbtastic!

hackmum · 24/06/2013 17:14

All this thread is doing is making me hungry. I am now yearning for a chip butty or a pizza with a side order of garlic bread. And I haven't eaten either chips or garlic bread in ages as I am trying to lose weight. Sigh.

Chandon · 24/06/2013 17:17

It is one of those combo's that foreigners like me find surprising.

I love fatty carbs like chips or pizza, but I fancy a really tangy salad with my chips or pizza, to " cut through the grease" .

I do pizza and garlic bread to make the pizza go further. I would also serve salad or cruditees.

To me a meal without anything fresh, like vegetables or salad, just does not appeal to me. So to me, serving chips with pizza is odd ( too much salty greasy carbs).

However, I have recently been converted to crisp sandwiches...so who knows

Miamiami · 24/06/2013 17:17

This thread is making me hungry. Im off for a huge fry up Grin Am I allowed to have chips with my fry? Grin

Miamiami · 24/06/2013 17:19

Pizza is too cardboardy for my liking, by the way.

sudointellectual · 24/06/2013 17:24

At school we regularly partook of the classic chip barm or chip naan, which is double carb and fabulous. But up in the hills there are chippies that do butter pie barm. This is a buttered barm cake containing a pie containing mashed potato and butter.

It is obviously amazing.

mymagaret · 24/06/2013 17:28

If your eating pizza your obviously not fussed about the carbs , so whats wrong with double carbs once in a while? Never heard of a chip butty? Or a Mcdonalds in a bun with Fries? Totally normal to me , as long as its a treat and not every night ! I think you need to get out more if this is what bothers you in life!

WafflyVersatile · 24/06/2013 17:32

Because it is carbtastic.

I expect they do know but they don't care. Not once in a while anyway.

mymagaret · 24/06/2013 17:35

Actually laughing out loud at JUDITHOFTHEPIECE

ScarletLady02 · 24/06/2013 17:38

Every restaurant that serves pizza that I've EVER been too (and that includes naice Italian ones) also serves garlic bread so it can't be THAT odd surely??

FWIW, pizza is my vice. I try and make it from scratch mostly as it's much better for you, but Dominos is luuuuuuuuuuuuuuush. I usually have it with garlic bread and salad.

Chips with pizza is a bit much for me, but again, not odd really.

EMUZ · 24/06/2013 17:38

I prefer a pasty barm to a butter pie one Grin meat and potato pasty in a buttered barm with brown sauce. Hangover food

TapselteerieO · 24/06/2013 20:22

This is our usual pizza between three adults and two children, usually have 1/3 of the dough left afterwards, so roughly 40g carbs per person, oh and we have home made (not greasy) baked "chips" with it plus salad, roasted peppers etc...

TapselteerieO · 24/06/2013 20:23

Oh and the great thing about that recipe is you can make garlic bread with the dough too - dc love making it.

ParadiseChick · 24/06/2013 20:25

Mmmmm carbs and more carbs

ExitPursuedByABear · 24/06/2013 20:37

One pizza between 5?

Ezza1 · 24/06/2013 20:51

I've not read the whole thread so apologies if this has been answered but:

What are we allowed to eat with garlic bread? Confused

IsaacCox · 24/06/2013 21:43

What about burger (in a bun) and chips? That's served all over.

Also, what lots of others have said, what do you have garlic bread with, if not pasta?

roses2 · 24/06/2013 21:46

YABU, garlic bread goes with everything!

exoticfruits · 24/06/2013 21:48

I wouldn't want a burger in a bun with chips.
I would have garlic bread with something without carbohydrates.

pourmeanotherglass · 24/06/2013 21:49

Garlic bread is lovely with cauliflour cheese
