You get pizza and chips in Italy but it is a tourist thing. However Italians do double up on carbs frequently. Potato in pasta dishes etc and there is often more than one pasta dishes out on a table in family homes.

I love a carb double up! Chip butties! What about french bread pizza!? A fave of mine from student days. Pizza topping on french bread, with a potato salad side!

Eat what you like in moderation is my suggestion.

On the Italian campsite we stayed on last year, they served pizza with chips on top. Fairly sure it was aimed at the German tourists though as the campsite was roughly 80% German, 10% Dutch and 10% British.

DS had one on the last night and said it was lovely!

arabesque · 24/06/2013 13:22

I don't think its odd; it's not a traditional combination in Italy but has been pretty standard over here for years, so I don't see how it can be considered strange or odd. Obviously if you were doing it on a regular basis it would be unhealthy, but as an occasional treat I don't think there's anything wrong with it.

YABU

Carbs are great and white carbs even better.

I love chips and garlic bread with pizza. It may be a lot of carbs but I agree with previous posters in that 'moderation' is the key word.

CharlotteBronteSaurus · 24/06/2013 13:38

YANBU
if you need chips, you're simply not eating enough pizza

chip butties, on the other hand...double carb perfection.

LillethTheCat · 24/06/2013 13:38

Did anybody else ever try that Lasagne Sandwich that Tesco sold a few years back? It was absolutely lovely. They didn't last for long, but if I could Id buy one again like a shot.

livinginwonderland · 24/06/2013 13:39

To those saying "you wouldn't have it in Italy!" - there are Italian pizzas that come with potatoes on top as a standard topping, and spaghetti dishes with potatoes and pesto.

WorraLiberty · 24/06/2013 13:50

I hate people wanking in about carbs all the time. Suddenly everyone is a freaking nutritionist

I don't understand it either

At one time food was just something everyone cooked and ate...and never thought too much about.

Nowadays it's more like a science lesson when you ask someone what they're having for lunch.

farewellfigure · 24/06/2013 14:16

If you can't have garlic bread with pizza or pasta what can you have it with?

How about quiche with new potatoes? Is that OK?

squoosh · 24/06/2013 14:22

Quiche and potatoes? Only if I was going to plough a field by hand afterwards.

flatpackhamster · 24/06/2013 14:24

HeySoulSister

No they haven't.... Hence obesity exists

Wasn't there an article in the paper the other day about how actual calories consumed per person per day have fallen in the last 40 years? Pretty sure it's down by about 400 per day. But we're moving around an awful lot less.

TapselteerieO · 24/06/2013 14:25

So would you eat Spanish omelette Squoosh?

farewellfigure · 24/06/2013 14:25

Seriously though... what can you have garlic bread with? Why was invented? Why invent something so amazing if you're then not allowed it with pizza or pasta? Am sad at the thought of no more garlic bread. Garlic bread and salad?

livinginwonderland · 24/06/2013 14:32

Garlic bread has to be eaten with spaghetti bolognese.

TooMuchRain · 24/06/2013 14:35

I don't think it's odd but I don't like the combination personally - pizza only goes with pizza for me

Lulabellarama · 24/06/2013 14:42

TapselteerieO Spanish omlette doesn't have pastry, while quiche does. It's not a good comparison.

squoosh · 24/06/2013 14:59

Spanish omelette is just potato carb wise.

The only times I double carb is when I'm drunk or if there's stuffing to go along with my roast potatoes. Deeee-licious.

squoosh · 24/06/2013 14:59

Garlic bread is delicious but I literally feel as though I'll explode if I have it with pasta. I save it for soup.

TapselteerieO · 24/06/2013 15:27

And soup, with bread, as long as it isn't potato or minestrone?

TapselteerieO · 24/06/2013 15:33

The no-carb-quiche brigade would have a heart attack if a chef served them this?

squoosh · 24/06/2013 15:35

Hmmmm, I might be able to chomp a slice down, just to be polite you understand!

I can also be polite when drunk and scoff a chip butty. Wink

Crinkle77 · 24/06/2013 15:44

It depends how much pizza you are having. If you are just having one slice then I don't see the harm in having a few chips. Similarly if you are having small serving of pasta or rice then a couple of slices of garlic bread is ok. It's all down to portion control.

BobblyGussets · 24/06/2013 15:53

I know of a food abomination far far worse than chips with pizza: What sick fuck dreampt up cauliflower (the devil's own cock wart) cheese as an aceptable accompaniment to roast dinner? Or roast dinner with cheesy leeks? Roast dinners have gravy on them, sometime chicken gravy. Would anyone seriously tell me they would eat a gravy based meal with cauiflower cheese or leeks?

Just for those bashers of low-carbers: I just had celeriac chips with low carb mayo and it was delicious. Probably better than real chips Grin

nellyjelly · 24/06/2013 16:31

I'm skinny. I need carbs so double up regularly! Agree with cauli cheese on a roast dinner though. Bad combination taste wise.

Personally don't like fruit in savoury dishes. Hate it in fact.
