to think this woman broke supermarket etiquette

was in Aldi this evening, approached a checkout followed by woman with trolley of stuff, when the operator said she was shutting. We went to move to the next till, with me waiting to make eye contact and be waved in front as per social norms... but this woman pointedly swung her trolley round and avoided eye contact so she could jump the queue Angry I only had two items! (ok it was curly fries and Haribo...)

Who does this, really?! Would anyone admit to it on here? Did she sit in her car reflecting on how much of a turd she just was, or are some people just oblivious? Hmm

Horrid woman.

Should have thrown the haribos at her. But then what a waste of good sweets.

fairylightsinthespring · 10/06/2013 20:57

bad form for the till to shut when people are queuing at it. they should put a sign up at the end of the belt

Ruprekt · 10/06/2013 21:01

Do not get me started on supermarket etiquette!!AngryAngryAngry

Tonight I went for a mooch round Tesco for some salad.

Twas reducing time. Smile

There were 4 women who had FILLED their trolley with things that had NOT been reduced and were queuing up for chappie to reduce them!

That is not right.

Things should be reduced, put on the shelf and THEN you help yourself.

I reported it to the store manager as I was so cross!!AngryAngry

One woman had 15 boxes of raspberries at £2 per box and got them reduced down to 22p per box!!

MogTheForgetfulCat · 10/06/2013 21:03

What a caaaah! Although think the till operator should have served you as you had only 2 items.

FadedSapphire · 10/06/2013 21:05

People keep pushing in front of me lately. Perhaps I am getting more invisible with age...
Did you tut, ignore, confront or make passive aggressive comments?
I have done all three on different occasions depending what mood I am in.

greenfolder · 10/06/2013 21:06

Bad bad form-in our local aldi people offer those with a couple of bits to go the front of the queue.

Shakey1500 · 10/06/2013 21:14

Very rude.

I was clothes mooching today and you know how you look through a rail and pull an item to one side to look at it? I did that and a woman approached the other side and pulled it the other way to also have a look. Whilst I was still holding it Confused Angry

You just don't do that.

LoSiento · 10/06/2013 21:15

Letting people in front of you is a sign of weakness you know.

hurricanewyn · 10/06/2013 21:17

I get really arsey if I only have a couple of things & people don't let me in front in Aldi (obv only if they have lots).

I don't know why it bothers me so much, I don't expect it in Sainsburys, but get properly angry in Aldi.

MyBoysAreFab · 10/06/2013 21:20

Pft, I was in our local shop the other day, had quite a few things and a woman came to the till same time a me carrying only one item, so I said do you want to go first. She agreed then proceeded to purchase about three different types of fags and about six different lottery tickets as I stood there holding six plants a la Crackerjack cabbages game (showing my age)

apostropheuse · 10/06/2013 21:22

I was in a small city centre Sainsbury's the other day - the type where there are a few tills in a row at the door to the shop. I was standing at the side, waiting to be called to the till when a young couple walked in front of me. I was quite impressed when I didn't have to say anything as the assistant told them... "sorry, I'm not serving you, that lady was in front of you".

To be fair to they did apologise. I actually don't know if they just didn't notice me standing there or if they were trying to be - as we Scots would say - sleekit!

Pleasecansomeonereply · 10/06/2013 21:27

I let an older gentleman infront of me today in Lidl. He only had 2 items. Cheeky bar steward didn't even acknowledge it!

I was fuming!

Elquota · 10/06/2013 23:06

This always happens when they close a till! An operator opens a new till, and shouts to the queue "Would you like to come round?" Then the people at the back of the queue go to the front of the new one, and are served much quicker Angry

It should be part of staff training that if you open a new till, those who've been waiting longest are first in line.

PurpleBlossom · 10/06/2013 23:24

Hmm, not sure about this one!

If a new till opens then surely it's first come first serve, because it's a new queue. Anyone can join it.

In the OP's case however the other person was rude because her queue was effectively moved to another till. Which is not the same as a new till opening.

Am I the only one who takes great pleasure in when someone races you to get into a queue first, then they open a new till that you join and get served first?!

I'm clearly an awful person BlushSad

LeGavrOrf · 10/06/2013 23:26

That is BAD FORM in aldi

It is the unwritten law in aldi.and lidl that if someone had a handful of stuff you let them before you if you have a trolley.

usualsuspect · 10/06/2013 23:31

If they open another till, you have to leg it to get there first.

Its a jungle out there.

HeffalumpTheFlump · 10/06/2013 23:37

I know this is a bit different, but I'm sure this is breaking supermarket ettiquette. The man in front of us at tesco the other day spaced out 6 or 7 items over the whole belt, then left another gap and then put the devider thingy on. I stood there looking at it for ages all confused. The checkout lady had to keep asking him if the items were to be done separately! He told her that no, they were all to go through together and stood there smiling like a bit of a loon about it. Confused

Tweasels · 10/06/2013 23:40

Oh I think new till opening is a first come first served scenario. Like queuing at a busy bar, there are no rules. It's every woman/man for themselves.

Ledkr · 10/06/2013 23:43

I like to deliberately not use a shopping divider but merely leave a large gap. It blows people's minds and I love to watch them frantically searching for a divider just in case I steal their satsumas.

Tweasels · 10/06/2013 23:46

I love that too Ledkr.

It really panics people doesn't it. They keep looking back and pushing their stuff further forward. Strange.

lollilou · 11/06/2013 08:42

Tweasels You don't queue jump at a busy bar either do you? I always thought you wait your turn and if someone was there before you you let them go first however annoying the wait is.

Tweasels · 11/06/2013 08:56

lollilou where I live, if you did that, you'd be waiting all night for a drink.

Loulybelle · 11/06/2013 09:24

That is bloody cheeky!!

When i was in the local co op, one of the tills busted and a massive queue on it, i moved over and let the 2 people infront go ahead of me, because they'd been queuing longer than me.

ZenGardener · 11/06/2013 09:33

I had a weird one where I went to a bakery that had two tills, one at either side of the shop. I was standing near the left hand till where a woman was being served, at the right hand till were three women circled around the till discussing something so I stood behind the woman being served at the left hand till to start a queue.

Then a woman from the right hand till comes over and stands by my shoulder. I step forward slightly to assert my position in the queue ahead of her as I was there first.

When the cashier finished serving the woman I stepped forward with my goods only for the cashier to call over to one of the women at the other till and say 'excuse me, I think you were first'. The woman came over and pushed in front of me.

I was really shocked!

I just placed my stuff on the counter and walked out. I boycotted the shop for about a week but their apple buns with icing were so damn good. It seems the dodgy cashier stopped working there anyway.

SuperiorCat · 11/06/2013 09:52

They know how to do it in our Waitrose - when a cashier is about to open up a new till, they approach the person waiting longest and ask them to come with them to the new till, saves the scrambling
