it has taken me to age 34 to twig that there are NO female characters in Thomas the Tank Engine

I don't know if I am more astounded by the fact there are actually no female characters, or the fact that it has taken until yesterday for me to realise, despite watching it practically daily as a child. I always loved watching it (still do )

Clarabelle? Clara? I'm sure there are two carriages with names like this

Aren't the carriages girls? Annie & Clarabel (my son isn't sure but he is 13). Emily is a green train & there is Mavis.

However I agree no real characters.

I can think of Molly, Emily, Annie and Clarabel.

Rosie?

Emily, rosie... ikwym though.

There's rosie and belle too

But... No main characters

What about Annie and Clarabel,(Thomas's carriages) and Daisy (a diesel engine)? I'm sure there are a couple more.Plus there are other newer female characters,now.

There are Annie and Carabel in the 1920s (?) originals.

And later addition in 1990s such as Emily.

An example of how attitudes can and do change? (Even if the original cohort of characters was too settled for many inroads to be made).

And Mavis. We have some early Thomas books with Mavis in them.

And Mrs Topham Hat. And Dowager Topham Hat. And the people that travel in Spencer are a couple.

Emily the green engine? Mavis the quarry diesel? I don't count the carriages as they are so passive it seems wrong from a femininist perspective. Don't get me started in the troublesome trucks. If you deconstruct it from a Marxist perspective they are basically the working classes.

ok, others have beaten me to it but there are lots. What's more, according to the song, "Emily really knows her stuff"!

I don't think I have ever watched a full episode of Thomas (DS hated it) but even I knew about Annie and Clarabel!
