What adverts? I have adblocker Wink

OutragedFromLeeds · 04/06/2013 22:45

Am I the only one who only ever sees the children running away Aviva ad? Are MNHQ trying to tell me something? Confused

livinginwonderland · 04/06/2013 22:48

I just use adblock.

LastTangoInDevonshire · 04/06/2013 22:49

I don't see any ads any more because I downloaded Ad Blocker. But they really did drive me mad.

olidusUrsus · 04/06/2013 22:51

Get AdBlock

Kleptronic · 04/06/2013 22:52

Does AdBlock block that Mensch woman? I have Ghostery and that didn't.

SuiGeneris · 04/06/2013 22:54

Subscription used to be something like 5gbp to use private messaging. So many people just avoided pms (I think- I certainly did).

Are ads surveys really that bothersome? I quite like surveys, don't really notice ads and would rather MN stayed free to use. As for LM, presumably it is easy enough not to click on her webchat?

Kleptronic · 04/06/2013 22:55

But she's smirking at me! Look! >

Mintyy · 04/06/2013 22:56

Actually, I do have adblock on my laptop.

Its more the association with LM that bothers me. Its like hq endorses her or something.

Kneedeepindaisies · 04/06/2013 22:59

What's the LM thing?

I'm on the app so I only have the Just Giving ad at the bottom. Tbh I hadn't really noticed it until this thread.

Tweasels · 04/06/2013 23:03

I was a bit baffled when I saw Ms Mensch's smug face looking out at me this afternoon. I'm sure we could all chip in 50p to have her removed Grin

Aside from that, the ads don't bother me, I can just ignore them. I know what you mean about paying Mintyy but it'll just never generate the same revenue as the adverts do.

joanofarchitrave · 04/06/2013 23:06

There used to be regular appeals to subscribe - any amount, minimum £10 suggested I think - IIRC the payment for personal messages was separate and lasted longer. It was like the Wikipedia appeals.

I don't really remember what it looked like without adverts but yes, it was very nice, calm, quick to load (but then it was a lot smaller).

It was quite nice not having so much PR stuff going on too. But I prefer adverts to emotional appeals to give money and imagining Justine awake at night worrying about how to replace the server.

musicposy · 04/06/2013 23:07

Who is she? Where do I see her?

I too only ever seem to see the aviva ad telling my my children are about to run away. I did post that I'd had to phone the police the other week as DD2 hadn't come home (unintentional, I must add, she got on the wrong bus) and I'm sure it targets you somehow.

I'm obviously only fit for social services type ads!

Most of the time I am on my tablet, and has been said, you don't get any of this popup/ dropdown/ flashy box rubbish. If it wasn't that it takes so long to type on it and makes me look illiterate, I wouldn't bother to go on mumsnet on the laptop at all.

GreenShadow · 04/06/2013 23:18
  1. Ads are actually quite unobtrusive - I genuinely don't notice them.
  2. There aren't that many surveys are there?
  3. Louise who?
Buzzardbird · 04/06/2013 23:24

The only ad I can see is asking me if I get enough sleep...its seen my 3am posting obv.

NorksAreMessy · 04/06/2013 23:25

Sorry, mintyy I couldn't disagree more.

Advertising is a very simple and effective way of generating revenue for a brilliant resource.
It is easy to ignore or block if you relly want to, but I regularly go the opposite way and click on all sorts of random stuff to 'donate' money to MN to keep it ticking along. Costs me nothing, helps MN, and I sometimes even like the stuff I click on.

I Counter your campaign with a 'keep MN free at the point of use' campaign of my own ( which might just need a snappier title :) )

Elquota · 05/06/2013 00:34

Set up your browser to block images for this particular website?

StuntGirl · 05/06/2013 00:42

kleptronic I absolutely did not notice that awful Mensch woman 'til your post pointing her out! I won't be reading any of the drivel she spouts, wonder how popular her blog has been?

I have ad block so don't see any of the adverts. I could just about live with the ones on the mobile site at the bottom of the page but those bloody awful ones midway down a page - fuck that.

I agree a Mensch blocker would also be nice! She popped up on The Guardian last week too, would be nice if I could delete all traces of her from my web browsing!

Littleballofhate · 05/06/2013 00:44

Long time lurker here. If mumsnet became a subscription site, I would not be able to access the great information I find here everyday.

The good old days when you had to pay so that people could say "CAT me, you cunt".

I don't care about the ads and I presume they help pay to keep the site running don't they?

MrsWooster · 05/06/2013 02:53

Keep it free. Ads schmads; it's wotth it for the bonkers variety of opinions and views.

carlajean · 05/06/2013 04:36

I do mn on my Nexus, so never see the adverts
