Visited my niece today, and played the wheres your nose/ears/eyes game.

When I said "where is your belly?" my sister snapped, don't say belly, say tummy.

Apparently it's common and said like "bell-leh"

Hmm

Maybe I am unreasonable to say belly, but my niece still pointed to her stomach when I asked where her belly was Grin

Yabu. But I just can't stand the word, other people will not be bothered by it.

squeakytoy · 03/06/2013 22:41

tummy-button would sound and look wrong, so yanbu

CamelBalls · 03/06/2013 22:43

Yabu - I hate the word belly I find it very common

CartwrightMiss · 03/06/2013 22:43

But I just can't stand the word

I don't particularly love the word, it was more of a slip of tongue. The first word that sprang to mind instead of stomach.

I say tummy, belly and tummy button.

Apologies. Perhaps I should have said -

"Fifi darling please indicate where the ventriculus is located on your body"

I don't like belly; it's unfortunately well used in the part of the country where DH is from. They also say 'belly pig' instead of 'belly of pig' or 'pig belly'. I don't know why; it's like they delight in shite English.

I don't know if I'd have a go for the same motives, or even if I would call you on it... but I don't like the word either.

apostropheuse · 03/06/2013 22:48

What makes belly "common" and tummy acceptable?

What a preposterous thing to say. It's just a word.

Next time say abdomen perhaps? Hmm

LolaDontCryOverSpiltEggnog · 03/06/2013 22:48

Every time someone say's belly I hear my dad say "pigs have bellies, children have tummies"

Don't think that there is anything wrong with it but I don't say belly Grin

ifancyashandy · 03/06/2013 23:17

I also hate the word belly. It just sounds so.... coarse.

I say stomach or tummy if it were in the context you write about in the OP.

JugglingChaotically · 03/06/2013 23:22

YNBU - I can be v silly on such things (eg had a fit on ta v thank you!) but on that one - life's too short! Belly button "normal". Tummy v belly v stomach - don't sweat the small stuff!!

Haggisfish · 03/06/2013 23:25

YABU - belly is coarse (I like that!) and tummy button is lovely. Belly - bleurch!

I thought "belly" was Sarf Lahndan.

I'm Australian, and I would say "tummy".

But if you say "belly", I will have no problem understanding which part of the body you are talking about.

usualsuspect · 03/06/2013 23:34

I say belly, tummy sounds a bit twee.

foolmouse · 03/06/2013 23:36

I say tummy but always belly button. Tummy button sounds stupid but tummy sounds better for what reason I do not know. I usually say stomach though tbf although it isn't actually technically my stomach, it is my abdomen Wink.

cafecito · 03/06/2013 23:36

I also hate the word belly. Totally irrational, but it has a similar effect to chalk on a whiteboard to me

snooter · 03/06/2013 23:37

Tummy & tummy button.
Belly pork.

usualsuspect · 03/06/2013 23:38

Tummy button is just wrong.

fieldfare · 03/06/2013 23:40

Tummy, and yet, belly button. I just prefer it that way!

seasalt · 03/06/2013 23:40

I always say belly. I think tummy sounds childish.

cafecito · 03/06/2013 23:41

maybe next time ask where her right iliac fossa/epigastric/left hypochondriac etc anterior abdominal regions are? would that be more acceptable [evil]

cafecito · 03/06/2013 23:43

I tell patients I am going to look at their tummy - if I said belly I'd probably fail

CamelBalls · 03/06/2013 23:45

I just find it common - it makes my teeth itch when adults say it either stomach or abdomen!

Belly seems such a "rough" word
