Visited my niece today, and played the wheres your nose/ears/eyes game.

When I said "where is your belly?" my sister snapped, don't say belly, say tummy.

Apparently it's common and said like "bell-leh"

Hmm

Maybe I am unreasonable to say belly, but my niece still pointed to her stomach when I asked where her belly was Grin

I'd laugh if a doctor said tummy, I'm not 5

FreudiansSlipper · 03/06/2013 23:47

I do not like the word belly I think of a big fat hairy sweaty beer belly

usualsuspect · 03/06/2013 23:47

Lol at it being a rough word.
MN is full of Mrs Bucket types.

ItsallisnowaFeegle · 03/06/2013 23:47

I say belly. I'm Glaswegian and proud Grin

DoctorAnge · 03/06/2013 23:49

Yuk belly is awful

Salmotrutta · 03/06/2013 23:50

Totally agree with you usual - makes me cringe to hear grown adults referring to "tummy" when speaking to other adults.

Sounds utterly ridiculous and stupid.

Say stomach for crying out loud or abdomen.

Fair enough if your talking to a young child.

ItsallisnowaFeegle · 03/06/2013 23:51

Just for everyone who thinks is common....

.....Belly's gonny get ye! Grin

Monty27 · 03/06/2013 23:52

I loathe the word belly yewww it makes my teeth itch and i get weird about it, I have no idea why. I hate moist as well

There has been a load of threads on here about words that make people cringe. Grin

Another one of mine is nipple, I know I know, but it just does send me into orbit to cringe planet and I have no idea why.

Salmotrutta · 03/06/2013 23:53

I'm sorry but I couldn't help hearing - Belly seems such a "rough" word

as if it was said like soppy Anne from The Famous Five...

timidviper · 03/06/2013 23:54

I really hate the word belly, I have no idea if it is common or not and to be honest I hate that kind of snobbishness but I still hate the word so YABU

cafecito · 03/06/2013 23:58

I'm just training, but yeah we are taught we have to say tummy Confused sometimes I say abdomen, usually I say both. I would quite enjoy a patient telling me off for words I use though. Some of the catchphrases are ridiculous but we have to use them. I'd still never say belly though..

Salmotrutta · 03/06/2013 23:59

Fair enough if you just don't like the sound of it - like "slacks" or "panties" .

But people saying tummy, when they are adults, to other adults, need to stop being coy and use proper terms.

Salmotrutta · 04/06/2013 00:01

Training at what? Medicine?

I bloody hate it even more when Doctors or nurses say "tummy"!

And you are told to say that?! Confused - even to actual grown ups??

usualsuspect · 04/06/2013 00:03

Tummy is a very childish word,it makes me cringe.

Salmotrutta · 04/06/2013 00:05

I know, I know.

I think you're secretly me usual Grin

usualsuspect · 04/06/2013 00:08

I can't imagine telling a DR I had tummy ache.

Futterby · 04/06/2013 00:08

We say belly where I'm from O.o stomach is formal, tummy is childish. And thus, belly was born.

saintmerryweather · 04/06/2013 00:11

fucking itchy fucking teeth again ffs

tummy is for 5 year olds and belly for commoners and stomach for adults. however having read them all so often on this thread i can only conclude that actually they are stupid words, all of them! look and sound rather meaningless now

cafecito · 04/06/2013 00:25

yep salmo, we have to say it to adults 'I am just going to do an abdominal exam.. this will involve me looking at your tummy ' - any deviation = failed osce...

cafecito · 04/06/2013 00:27

stomach is not interchangeable with abdomen, it's just an organ. It's a bit like meddling tongue and face up, or something

KikeriFreedomCastle · 04/06/2013 00:31

Yes, belly is coarse and vulgar, apparently.

Salmotrutta · 04/06/2013 00:58

Coarse and vulgar.

Hah!

I might start saying it.

Salmotrutta · 04/06/2013 01:00

And yes, I do know that abdomen and stomach aren't interchangeable cafecito Grin.

But "tummy" isn't a bloody proper word! It's a contraction of stomach surely? Grin

cafecito · 04/06/2013 01:01

Grin that's a good point!

it's worse, most of us say ' I'm just going to examine your tummy mr bloggs'
