To think this was really rude...

So it's been a lovely sunny day, my DD has been playing out on some communal grass which is situated outside mine and another ladies house all day.
There is around 7 children on the street who are around the same age and who play together.

I decided to bring out a chair at 3pm to sit and watch them play, today it was just me and DD in the house and I had done all the jobs in the house so we had some sandwiches out there and I had a cider. The lady who lives next door came out and said can I put my chair next to yours? I said of course, I know her quite well but not to say she is a friend.

Forward till 8pm and we are still there enjoying a drink and talking to the children. My DD had eaten her tea of cottage pie at 6 ish, sat on a blanket with us. I didn't eat then as wasnt really hungry, this is only a one off as such a nice day and both of us at home alone. Then with the neighbour being friendly and making an effort I didn't like to go inside.

So at 8pm I said to her are you hungry? And she said yes I am , so I said well there is lots of cottage pie left should I get us some? Yes that would be lovely she said.
So I emerged with 2 bowls of food, forks ect. I sat eating mine, she had one folk full then proceeded to lower the bowl onto the floor , towards her little dog that had joined us. She then looked at me and said " do you mind? "
I actually was go smacked, she was feeding my fucking tea to the dog, my lovely slow cooker lamb cottage pie to the dog.
I just said er no. As the plonked my bowl down on the grass and the bloody mut wolfed the lot down.

Now I don't begrudge the dog a meal, just not mine!! That could have been frozen for another day.
When the bowl was empty she said I hope you didn't mind I just can't stand cottage pie!! It's the texture, it's like baby food.
AIBU to be fuming.?

The woman a) accepted your generously offered meal and ate one mouthful, she then b) used your crockery to feed it to her dog in front of you, and c) compared your food to baby food. I'd say its pretty clear she has limited social skills - I wouldn't start a neighbourhood spat over it, but I wouldn't be positioning my chair next to hers next time there's a sunny day. Ridiculously rude!!!!

Queazy · 02/06/2013 10:27

Just read some posts saying you gave her cottage pie not shepherds pie! She didn't like it because it was 'baby food' not because it was lamb AND fed it to a dog. I would think it rude if someone fed tit bits from their plate to the dog in front of me. I think this one is just YANBU - no great learnings, just a rude neighbour who was half cut on wine Smile

Everythingwillbeok · 02/06/2013 10:27

Right snooter ill cook it for you anytime and you can be the judge!!

Wow. YANBU.

chillinwithmyyonis · 02/06/2013 17:14

Very rude but it made me laugh, sorry!

YesIamYourSisterInLaw · 02/06/2013 18:22

Incredibly rude my first reaction was that she realise it was lamb and doesn't eat it, I wouldn't but I wouldn't have given it to my dog either.
I understand you we're shocked in the moment but I would have said that I really didn't want her dog eating of my bowl bleugh I hate that it makes me cringe!

YesIamYourSisterInLaw · 02/06/2013 18:23

Realised*

I know someone who gives her dog half her cups of tea, I never drink anything when I'm there

The recipe for my dog-worthy cottage (shepherds) pie for the poster who asked is:

Lamb mince
10 shallots
Salt/pepper
4 carrots
Cup of red wine
Rosemary
Veg stock cube
1 Knorr veg stock pot
Cornflower
Tomato purée
Water
Pinch of mixed herbs
Clove of garlic.

Just throw all in slow cooker, mine was in there around 7 hours, stirring every hourish then do the mash separate then put into a casseroles dish and cook in oven till the meat juices bubble right up though the mash.

Only on MN would this thread be answered by "Actually, cottage pie is beef...."
