i think I have thrush in my breast. Occassional stabbing pains and general pain so bad I can't lie down. Shivering and very cold though breast itself is hot to touch.

DS haS Had it in his mouth for ages and on secnd lot of treatmebnt. I've been using canisten on my breast but its not helped.

Don't know what to do. Chemist said take paracetomol and see gp but can't get appointment before monday.

actually considering a&e I'm in so much pain but i know its the wrong thing to do :(

Poor you - sounds like mastitis. I had this a lot with ds2 and I felt horrific.

Sometimes it went away on its own with hot baths and expressing in the bath, but sometimes I needed antibiotics. If you're at the shivery, feverish stage you probably need some tablets. You won't need to stop bf and you should start to feel better within 24 hourse. Try and see a doctor asap. Hope you feel better soon!

gohound · 01/06/2013 20:16

Go to A&E or a walk-in. Don't mess around with the OOH or NHS direct. Just go get some anti-b's and fast! Loads of sympathy and get well quick quick.

Slobberedupon · 01/06/2013 20:20

Kelly mum has great advice, keep breastfeeding, try expressing that breast as well, warm compress before feeding/expressing, get antibiotics, rest etc. kellymom.com/bf/concerns/mother/mastitis/

Slobberedupon · 01/06/2013 20:23

Posted too soon, if you don't keep trying to keo the breast empty then it could develop into an absess. Good luck and hope it goes away quickly, it is horrible. It will really hurt to feed on that breast but preserve as baby feeding is the best way to empty a breast effectively.

TeaMakesItAllPossible · 01/06/2013 20:23

Keep feeding. You should feed through and you need antibiotics.

The baby, once you've got ABs, will help clear it up quicker by sucking clear the blockage. I have memories of DS suckling through blood and green gunge I'm afraid. Grim. But doctors will treat as an emergency. If you have OOH, drop-in or NHS direct use them. If A&E is your only option because you can't get treatment elsewhere I'd go there.

I hope it clears up soon. Mastitis is very painful

thefuturesnotourstosee · 01/06/2013 20:24

phoned 111 and they've made me an appointment for 9.40pm at the local out of hours. will have to get taxis and leave children with dp but needs must.

No doubt I'll be waiting there anyway bet a saturday night clinic does not run to time :(

the 111 lady was very kind and very sympathetic and helpful though

oh and thank god for our amazing nhs. At least I'm only worrying about taxi fares. It could be doctors fees or worse

It sounds exactly like mastitis. I called my out of hours GP and they arranged an antibiotic prescription over the phone.
I kept nursing and after 24 hours of ABs I was already feeling much better.

lljkk · 01/06/2013 20:27

It will be worth the hassle. We all feel for you.

nextphase · 01/06/2013 20:32

Hope you get AB's soon, and can feed through your problem.
Also, once you start antibiotics, especially if DS already has thrush, you are likely to pick it up aswell.
Can you take some probiotics to try and limit the effect, and get the pair of you treated for yeast infection?

GirlWiththeLionHeart · 01/06/2013 20:34

Hope you feel better soon op, sounds bloody horrible

ellroygal · 01/06/2013 20:34

Massaging the breast armoit to nipple way helped and then i was desperate. So drank some Apple cider vinegar it worked for me and I didn't need any antibiotics. Cabbage leaves may give relief until the doctors.Get better soon

SaltaKatten · 01/06/2013 20:38

Does the breast feel hot or lumpy, any red spots? Try feeding from the affected breast first each feed even though it hurts. Massaging and as was suggested above, warm compresses are good as well. If you can feel a lump, try stroking it gently towards the nipple as the baby is feeding. Mastitis is absolutely horrible but will hopefully not last long.

RainbowsFriend · 01/06/2013 20:50

Sounds odd but the best thing to di until you get antibiotics is to feed off the affected breast by kneeling on all fours over your child so the breast hangs directly down.

Honestly.

I've had mastitis 3 times and each time I've managed to avoid antibiotics by doing this.

And stay in bed/ drink fluids / take paracetamol / get someone else to do absolutley EVERYTHING that is not bfeeding for at least 3 days. No nappy changes . Nothing.

Also check your nipple for tiny white plug/spots and try and flick them out if you find any.

elfycat · 01/06/2013 21:02

can you take your temperature? I bet you've got a high temp and you need to take a couple of layers off to help.

I thought that as soon as you said shivery. A high temp can leave you feeling freezing and wrapping up won't help.

Paracetamol can help bring a temperature down and is OK for BFeeding. You're going to want 2-3 days of being looked after and no hassle if you have an infection.

thefuturesnotourstosee · 01/06/2013 21:02

sounds like bliss Rainbow but with a 7 year old to care for as well and DP being away for work Monday to Thursday its very sadly not going to happen.

will try the all 4s bit though

feeding ds and it really hurts. taxi in 20 minutes

Mastitis is awful. You need antibiotics, to bf as much as possible and to be sure nothing compresses the breasts. You need someone to look after your older kids so you can sleep it off and bf your little one.

gohound · 01/06/2013 21:05

Glad you're being seen! Hope the meds kick in very soon.

marriedinwhiteagain · 01/06/2013 21:15

Anti-biotics, plenty of feeding, paracetamol for pain. Get checked for thrush - often goes hand in hand and you and bubba need treating. Fourth dose and it subsides.

Spuns silly but if you can get year hands on a savoy cabbage - tear leaves off till they get brest sized, bung the leaves in fridge, when right sized ones atre nice and cold wrap over breast, shove pn bra, soothes and tkes the heat out, replace with another when it goes soggy - the third or fpourth won't go soggy.

Rest and look after yourself 'tis lis shit - like the flu with pain and baby led exhaustion and no time to rest. The AB's will mean twice the naps but just keep feeding to flush pout of you and bub.
Love xx

PicaK · 01/06/2013 21:35

OMG this happened to me. Same time of day etc.

Please do not let anyone in a&e squeeze your boobs to see if they can 'clear the blockage'. Caused me no end of problems as the infection went everywhere. Skin went red and peeled off. Breast scans showed murky pools everywhere.

Basically if you squeal with pain tell them to stop. Anti biotics do good but if it's got hold you may need them iv. If you are not better in 2 dasy go back.

You can breastfeed through it but you can also stop. I kept going but it was hard.

Big hug. It's awful but it will go.

Nanny0gg · 01/06/2013 23:48

If no-one has mentioned it yet - cabbage leaves in your bra (as well as, not instead of, medical treatment). Savoy fits well!

Not old wives tale - really cooling and soothing on the breast (keep in fridge until used).

Nanny0gg · 01/06/2013 23:48

Ooops - just seen someone has!

Hope you're feeling better now OP.

Hope you got some treatment last night OP and are having a rest this morning

thefuturesnotourstosee · 02/06/2013 10:45

thank yo everyone. I was seen by a lovely doctor just gone 10pm. She took less than 1 minute to diagnose mastitis and thankfully was very gentle with my poor sore booby. I sat in waiting room shivering and crying. I think receptionist was glad when I went. I managed to find late night chemist so started ABs last night. Still in awful pain but temperature coming down.

Feedinhg ds again
