to think our Prime Minister and his family are entitled to a summer holiday abroad?

Heaven knows I loathe the man's policies but surely he and his family are entitled to a week or two in the sun? A couple of nutters murdered an innocent man but he'd just be giving more publicity to their "cause" if he cancelled his family trip to Ibiza?

Of course he needs a break now and then, but not this week, surely.

One of the main problems with his profile as PM is that people see him as disconnected from what ordinary people go through. The pics of him and Sam enjoying a lovely meal on holiday yesterday were juxtaposed against those of the raw grief of that soldier's family as they collapsed on the streets where he died. I can't see how this will do him any favours.

ChaoticTranquility · 27/05/2013 11:35

Personally, I think he should stay in Ibiza...permanently.

BobblyGussets · 27/05/2013 11:36

There are already two threads about this; why another?

According to the link, it's a 3 day break over the Bank Holiday weekend.

No I don't think the PM or anyone else is entitled to a holiday abroad. Everyone is entitled to time off work and of course he ought to be spending time with his children. I think PMs and MPs would set a better example if they had holidays in their own country to encourage people to have holidays here and also avoided flying for the sake of the environment, particularly flying for such a brief trip. He could have gone to Bournemouth and relaxed and been 3 hours from London. If he's PM for 5 years, that's 5 years out of his children's childhoods, hardly a lifetime if they - horror of horrors - don't have a holiday abroad whilst he's running down the country.

I don't really see the terrorist incident last week as a particular reason why the PM shouldn't have a holiday over the BH weekend. It's not like he's left the country for 6 months. Though I wonder how many police officers have had leave cancelled recently due to the incident.

I'd be concerned if we had a PM who used Sun newspaper holiday vouchers if that meant the Sun was his choice of newspaper!

VerySmallSqueak · 27/05/2013 11:39

Leather he is pm.
For 5 years I would expect him to only take holidays when the timing is appropriate. And in these times of austerity I would expect them to be in this country.

I wouldn't expect him to take no time off at all - as someone else said, that would not be sensible in such a powerful position.

manicinsomniac · 27/05/2013 11:39

MissBetsey - if not this week then when? Something as bad as this or worse happens every week!

VerySmallSqueak · 27/05/2013 11:42

If he doesn't want the job and what comes with it any more,he can step down and go on holiday then if he wants.
It's not like most of us voted him in anyway.

edam · 27/05/2013 11:42

It'd be nice if the victims of his policies could have a holiday too. Rest and relaxation are important for everyone, not just filthy rich PMs.

Pan · 27/05/2013 11:42

Hasn't this circus of desperate politicians gone on long enough? A really tragic circumstance for the soldier and esp his family who have to get along with life without him.

But the blanket coverage and eeking out of every patriotic statement is a reflection of the Coalition struggling and Tories running scared. (and the opposition parties being too scared to say "hang on folks, let's get some perspective here!"). Cobra, review of the Prevent strategy, speaks to a party political weakness and not security.

There's nothing like a war to galvanise the dominant population behind an incumbent political party, which also unfortunately means other innocent people (in this case the muslim population) are getting damaged, and possibly will killed as a result. (fire bomb attack on a Grimbsy mosque yesterday?). Cameron has a to do what he can get garner maximum political opportunity.

MeiMeiMeiMei · 27/05/2013 11:44

Bobbly - because I didn't get to see the other two threads, what with there be thousands started on MN every day.

MissBetsey - yesterday I strolled through the city centre and saw hundreds of families seated at outdoor cafes enjoying the sunshine like the Camerons ... totally disconnected from the soldier's family's "raw grief". That's because we are disconnected, it is their tragedy and we should let them grieve in private.

Remember the Camerons are grieving parents too; it's only a few years since they lost their boy and I'm sure it's something they won't ever get over. So maybe they need some time away once in a while to help them cope.

What does he need to be doing here? I'm perfectly happy for him to fuck off abroad. Not so happy at letting him back in.

NorthernLurker · 27/05/2013 11:51

He's taken office staff etc with him - so we'll be paying for that I assume?
Of course he shouldn't have gone. He needs to sack his PR if they couldn't foresee photos of him relaxing would be juxtaposed with photos of a murdered man's mother collapsing in the street.
He's entitled to a holiday but not this week. HIs situation as a bereaved parent has nothing to do with it. I hadn't realised Ibiza was a wonderful cure all for lifetime grief Hmm

I love a good debate to get the juices flowing. Grin

I just asked DP his thoughts on the matter and he's with the opposing argument. We're now having a great wee discussion about it. Grin

Spartak · 27/05/2013 12:05

If he had gone at another time, there would no doubt have been a DM article accusing him of being a terrible father for taking his children away in term time.

Pan · 27/05/2013 12:08

True Spartak.

Cameron these days must be thinking "What would Nigel Farage do?"

comedycentral · 27/05/2013 12:10

YANBU at all!

Dawndonna · 27/05/2013 12:12

. So maybe they need some time away once in a while to help them cope.
There are many of us with disabled adults and children in our families. Due to his vile cutbacks and pernicious little narrative, we won't be getting holidays and we'll have to cope. Hmm

scottishmummy · 27/05/2013 12:12

dc isn't like ordinary families.hes pm,an extraordinary role.that involves stepping up
all these inane oh gosh bet he needs hol are risible.no he needs to act like pm
he's in a role were he required to suspend personal preference for overall politics, country

VerySmallSqueak · 27/05/2013 12:19

We also need to take into consideration the people who have to miss their holidays because of situations like this.
How about the police who get their leave cancelled or have to work extended shifts/overtime?

It's part and parcel of the responsibilities when you are working in certain professions, and if you can't stand the heat you should stay out of the kitchen.

VerySmallSqueak · 27/05/2013 12:24

There are loads of people who can't go on holiday at certain times of the year in their minimum wage jobs because of the needs of the business.
There's loads of people who have to enter into a free for all with their work mates to book school holidays for childcare because only a certain number of people can have time off at once.

I know these over grown public school boys have had everything their way most of their lives, but they really need to get a grip and enter the real world that the rest of us inhabit.
