to think our Prime Minister and his family are entitled to a summer holiday abroad?

Heaven knows I loathe the man's policies but surely he and his family are entitled to a week or two in the sun? A couple of nutters murdered an innocent man but he'd just be giving more publicity to their "cause" if he cancelled his family trip to Ibiza?

A bit of 'slumming' it would be a step in the right direction.

Why would it? Who would that benefit?

He's gone to Ibiza FFS, not a private Caribbean island. It might make people who can't afford their own foreign holiday feel a tiny bit better for all of about two seconds before they go back to hating him again, but it wouldn't actually achieve anything.

VerySmallSqueak · 27/05/2013 11:18

kim147 he should take time out,of course.

But this is a true example of there being the right time and place.

ItsallisnowaFeegle · 27/05/2013 11:19

It might just benefit him

scottishmummy · 27/05/2013 11:19

he can have a calm visible prime ministerial presence, visit scene, thank staff
he should be around, involved, and present in aftermath of such tragedy
he could be liaising with multi faith agencies, meeting bereaved family, coordinating strategy

CelticPixie · 27/05/2013 11:20

YANBU. Had he have been on holiday last week when the attack took place and not returned then I'd have understood the outcry, but honestly, it's not like law and order has completely broken down is it? He's entitled to a holiday like anyone e,se.

Totally agree with you OP.

There is nothing he can do at the moment. He"s the PM, part of a politicial party. He's not Superman, able to be here there and everywhere, and personally save the county. He reacted well in the crisis by returning promptly and assuming leadership.

My, people are full of poison today.

he's job not like anyone else.ths isn't the McRegular family,he's pm
this isn't comparable to och families work hard,he deserve a break
you have a significant job,you may be required to change plans, adapt and accomodate

VerySmallSqueak · 27/05/2013 11:23

If a terrorist attack on an innocent man in the streets of our capital isn't a good enough reason to stay and do his job,I really wonder what it'd take.

He needs to have some respect and sort his priorities.

Bowlersarm · 27/05/2013 11:24

VerySmallSqueak do you want him to patrol the streets personally?

kim147 yes it does make a difference.
It sends a very clear message to the victims family and to the general public.

VerySmallSqueak · 27/05/2013 11:27

Bowlers we would be up shit creek if we were relying on DC patrolling the streets personally,,,,,

Yes - lets hope he emigrates and stays there!

scottishmummy · 27/05/2013 11:28

he's supposed to lead,be visible and calm in time of need
he could be thanking staff involved
instead he's off on holiday

MeiMeiMeiMei · 27/05/2013 11:28

Why should he visit the scene- to look at a pile of cellophane wrapped flowers?

What staff should he thank? Presumably those who were doing the job they're paid to do.

Liaise with multi-faith agencies? Do you mean have a cup of tea with Buddhist/Sikhs/Muslims/Jews/Christians/Jedis? And say what?

Co-ordinate strategy. What strategy?

Three weeks ago an elderly Muslim man was murdered in a suspected racist attack. Now a white soldier has been murdered in what was definitely a racist attack. Both murders were horrible and shocking, both were of innocent people who did not deserve to die like this.

But since it is the murderers of the latter victim who are safely behind bars I don't see that the country is any more at risk than it was 3 weeks ago. And I didn't see anybody suggesting that the PM should hang around to support the family of the first victim.

Bowlersarm · 27/05/2013 11:31

He has lead, he is visible and calm.

How do you know he hasn't thanked staff involved? Do you think he should repeatedly thank them on the hour every hour scottishmummy?

scottishmummy · 27/05/2013 11:32

he should go to acknowledge public sentiment, speak,be visible
it's what the flowers signify.they are visible support, acknowledgement
he should be losing with multi faith agencies to listen, show collaboration, and unity of condemnation

Bowlersarm · 27/05/2013 11:33

.....which I'm sure he'll be doing this week.

GeorginaWorsley · 27/05/2013 11:33

Don't have a problem with him taking a holiday at all.
However rightly or wrongly it looks bad,all over the papers, even Tory supporting ones.
Perhaps from cynical PR point of view would have been better to stay at home.

Some sort of crisis happens most times a PM goes on holidays. And there is always these kinds of stories.

Do you genuinely believe he shouldn't go away on holiday with his young children for five (or ten) years?

Deputy Prime Minister is good enough. That's what a deputy is.
