To wonder about the age you give your kids alcohol?

so, this started with my Auntie and Uncle saying when you're 14 you cna have an alcoholic drink with a meal in a pub. Then we got talking about how old we were when we had our first glass of alcohol, my feckless Dad gave me homebrewed wine aged 8 and I was sick as a dog. Anyone have any under age drinkers?

Cross posts- the recent posters seem more of a relaxed bunch than the ones I had read before I typed!

DD was invited to have a glass of wine with us from about 14 or 15 but rarely did as she didn't like the taste.

I think there is a huge difference between allowing 5/6/7 yo some alcohol or 15/16/17 yo tbh.

Fresher's Week is a fine example of how culture shapes what seem acceptable - that kind of a university 'initiation' just did not exist in my home country so was not a concern.

Cetus my childre are still very young (though older than many of the regular drinkers mentioned on this thread!) but I have never said I won't let them drink before 18. I suspect I'll start allowing small amounts from say 14. But they will be of at least secondary age

DS(10) had a sip of beer at a festival last summer. Has shown no interest in having any since. Didn't like wine after he got a glass knocked over him as a toddler and some got in his mouth! Have no plans to make it more widely available until he is well into his teens.

Stealth, coke is also a drug, caffeine is extremely bad and very addictive. Your coke every couple of months is probably worse than my watered down Baileys once a year.

And no, I wouldn't give my child a cigarette, because that would be illegal. Baileys isn't.

As for why? Well because DD asked if she could have a glass, to join in with everyone (16 people) around a table all who were having a drink after a huge Christmas dinner. She liked it, it took her about an hour to drink it, she's never asked for it again (although she does like baked baileys cheesecake)

Personally apart from the odd sip I won't be letting my son have alcohol until he's a teenager. With that said- if he is going to drink before that and is determined to do it i'd rather he did it in my front room then on a street corner doing god knows what.

Stealthpolarbear · 23/11/2014 20:15

I realise coke isn't ideal and have worked out last time ds had some was summer. SO I'm not GOING TO STRESS?
THIS IS ABOUt giving children alcohol.
Children drinking alcohol is a serious public health problem. COKE Is as well, in another context
I can kind of see the if of them asking for it but I think I'll continue to say "no, when you're older" till at least secondary
Again apols for stupid typing

EveDallasRetd · 23/11/2014 20:38

Your dodgy keyboard is quite funny stealth - I couldn't understand why you were shouting STRESS at me! Grin

Like I've said before, each to their own. I'm not worried about it so DD will have one on Xmas day if she asks, you are worried about it so will say no. Neither practice will cause fireworks for us Smile

m on an iPad, think it's the internet connection
I see what I've typed ten mins after
I think sometimes it types the words before it takes the caps off iyswim
Very annoying, wasn't like this a day or so ago

Stealthpolarbear · 23/11/2014 20:53

Think I might give mn a break for a while as this is too frustrating
I'll be BACK IN THE SUMMER when we've had A CHANCE To change providers and I've told orange. What I think
That's ORANGES for anyone who missed it first time
