I commute in and out of London daily. I am now very used to seeing women every morning applying a full face on their way to work. I don't do this myself as I like to do my prep in privacy at home.

But.. I am sat next to a young woman with a caked on face who has whipped out the baby wipes. She has wiped off all the make up (before wiping her face on her jumper the dirty moo!) and is now reapplying. The whole lot! With dirty hands! Why?

What do I not get here? Would I be unreasonable to ask her why she thinks this is ok? Am I being a judgey old cow?

Yes, but why are some people so horrified by a woman putting on make up in public? It's personal grooming but it's not inappropriate is it? It's just her face?

TheOrchardKeeper · 21/05/2013 20:45

And why do people care? If you don't like it/do it yourself then why can't you simply overlook it? It doesn't even make a noise. You have to sit there and watch on purpose for it to affect you for a sustained amount of time?

scottishmummy · 21/05/2013 20:45

applying make up on train is slovenly and common
up it away you munter.diiiiiiiiirty unseemly.common
what next change tampon on train as you were in rush leave house

TheOrchardKeeper · 21/05/2013 20:47

Oh, so it's a snobbery issue.

Thanks for cleaning that up Smile Hmm

TheOrchardKeeper · 21/05/2013 20:48

making derogatory comments about other women on a parenting website is common by the way...and yet, here we are

NoelHeadbands · 21/05/2013 20:48

Oh oh oh I LOVE watching people do their make up. It's fascinating in a slightly voyeuristic way (I'm not ashamed). I go into a bit of a trance.

And the sound of rummaging around in a make up bag, love it

Mindyourownbusiness · 21/05/2013 20:48

I hate it too and makes me feel quite stabby and l have absolutely no idea why. Strangely l also absolutely hate hate anyone watching me doing it or even glancing at me if l am in a public loo or something as l just always feel they are looking at me in a negative way - again no idea why, but maybe theres a connection.
l obviously have issues Hmm

Nanny0gg · 21/05/2013 20:48

In my view, yes it is. But then I'm old and in the Old Days it never used to be the Done Thing.

Jeez, the things people moan about on here.

Indeed...

ReluctantBeing · 21/05/2013 20:49

Well said Scottishmummy. I remember a girl at school changing a tampon in the classroom. Dirty cow.

usualsuspect · 21/05/2013 20:49

I never had you down as a snob, SM.

valiumredhead · 21/05/2013 20:50

People do get their knickers in a twist about such non issues...

usualsuspect · 21/05/2013 20:50

I'm old, we used to apply our make up on the bus.

MrsBertMacklin · 21/05/2013 20:50

I don't mind seeing other people do their makeup, it's their concern about the germs, as long as they're not tweezing/shaving/sending anything into the air (bearing in mind the reports about what you can find on train and bus seats anyway). I don't put on anything that involves fingers, as I don't like thinking about the things I've touched beforehand.

This all being said, I think I have the winning/most disgusting instance of this type of thing.

On the bus, about 4 years ago. Woman in front sitting on an aisle seat is dry shaving her legs with a Gillette.

TheOrchardKeeper · 21/05/2013 20:51

I can understand if you're of a different generation etc.

Different things were expected of women (not on but it's how it was).

Still don't see why people can't accept it's their issue and just overlook it. I don't do it personally but wouldn't bat an eye lid and am genuinely surprised people do...

Theironfistofarkus · 21/05/2013 20:51

Another who applies make up on tube. It's dead time so might as well use it. Have always thought it interesting to watch others do it. Can't understand why anyone else would be bothered at all.

usualsuspect · 21/05/2013 20:52

I find people gawping at me on the train offensive ,TBH.

TheOrchardKeeper · 21/05/2013 20:52

Changing a tampon in public view & putting make up on are as far apart as you can get btw...jeez Hmm

usualsuspect · 21/05/2013 20:53

The girl was showing her face, not her fanny.

LittleIllusionMachine · 21/05/2013 20:54

I do my makeup on the train every morning. I already get up at 6 and have to leave the house for 7.30. By the time the 4 yo and I are both washed and fed etc I just have very little time left!

I didn't realise people would even care! It will not stop me though. If you don't like it, don't look!

TheOrchardKeeper · 21/05/2013 20:55

But ladies are meant to pretend we look made up 'naturally' Usual' Hmm

scottishmummy · 21/05/2013 20:55

Actually thinking about it my mother used to always tell me off for looking in the mirror and l remember from being very young if l wanted to experiment with make up or hair as you do when young l would always quickly jump away from the mirror and pretend l wasn't looking in it if she came in.
She would also never refer to it as looking in the mirror but as 'fancying yourself'. E.g. What you doing fancying yourself in that mirror have you got any homework you could be doing' etc etc.
So maybe l'm a bit Envy of people that can openly sit in a crowd and do this to their hearts content without any self consciousness.

LadySlatternlysHoover · 21/05/2013 20:56

It wouldn't bother me. I'd probably be a bit jealous of her steady hand.

I can't even MN on the bus without accidentally hitting the "hide" thread button then wondering why I can't find half the things I was reading.

morningsarepants · 21/05/2013 20:57

I'd do it if I was any good at it but I always end up poking my mascara in my eye....
