We're taking family out for dinner tonight. Do wanted to go Italian, I thought it would be a bit expensive so we booked local place instead. Dbil texted to say we couldn't go to where we'd booked as he thought owner is an arse. So we book Italian instead. Mil then says, "oh, can't we go somewhere nicer?"
I was brought up to believe that if someone is taking you out you are just grateful and don't moan about it? (Italian place is lovely, mil just thinks it's wrong to pay for some pasta and sauce...)

Tell MIL it won't be a jar of Dolmio and a pack of dried pasta :o.
Yes, very rude - and actually I had this conversation recently with DS2 who was wingeing about the choice of restaurant PILs were taking us to recently. I pointed out if someone is buying you a meal then you eat it and are grateful - but then DS2 is 14, not an adult.
