We're taking family out for dinner tonight. Do wanted to go Italian, I thought it would be a bit expensive so we booked local place instead. Dbil texted to say we couldn't go to where we'd booked as he thought owner is an arse. So we book Italian instead. Mil then says, "oh, can't we go somewhere nicer?"

I was brought up to believe that if someone is taking you out you are just grateful and don't moan about it? (Italian place is lovely, mil just thinks it's wrong to pay for some pasta and sauce...)

Are you paying? Cheeky snatches. Shock They should be grateful you are being so generous.

Take me, I'm very appreciative Grin Is puttanesca on the menu? Smile

Kind of rude, but you're family so I wouldn't think so. Although if you're not that close then yes it's rude.

Leave your mother in law at home and take me instead. I always appreciate a good Italian.

Tell MIL it won't be a jar of Dolmio and a pack of dried pasta :o.

Yes, very rude - and actually I had this conversation recently with DS2 who was wingeing about the choice of restaurant PILs were taking us to recently. I pointed out if someone is buying you a meal then you eat it and are grateful - but then DS2 is 14, not an adult.

Yes we're paying, and taking 10 of them so not going to be bloody cheap. When mil mentioned that she thought it was silly to pay for pasta I'm ashamed to say I replied, "well, you're not paying are you?"

Wouldn't be ashamed at all to have said that, gin (love your nn). I'm usually v. pro the MILs (I'll be one in 3 weeks) but that is just plain bad manners.

I would have been tempted to say the same!

What did she reply to that?

I'm usually pro mil too, she's usually Fab. She didn't say anything, just asked what time we were picking her up.

We're paying as it's partly for dp's birthday and partly to celebrate a wee windfall (much of which will be spent on dinner)

Why on earth would you waste even a penny of a windfall on such ungrateful people, let alone spend most of it on them?
