AIBU - No sweets or squash

AIBU to not serve squash or give out sweets at a children's party?

Just wondering what parents would think of going to a children's party where there was only water to drink and just birthday cake to take home. For us that would be normal and I wouldn't think anything of it but just wondering if parents would be surprised at not seeing squash or sweets?

Nkfffff how old we're these kids who all sat down and ate spag Bol together? I am genuinely boggling at the thought of a gaggle of 5 year olds being served spaghetti and sauce! What a mess that would be!

Punkatheart · 29/04/2013 14:59

I did sandwiches but I cut them into funky shapes - flowers etc. At an alien-themed party, I served 'weird' food in takeaway cartons. Alien eyeballs (grapes) etc. Like politics, it's a question of spin.

I kind of miss children's parties but I am aware that I always went OTT!

forevergreek · 29/04/2013 14:59

Sweetestcup- the thing is its never possible to please everyone anyway. Out last party had children who were vegetarian/ vegan/ Jewish/ Muslim/ dairy free/ etc. I try and choose something ok but it's never going to suit everyone.

mamab30 · 29/04/2013 14:59

We would do spag Bol.

I hate warm weak kia-ora, egg/ham/jam and meat paste sliced bread sandwiches and jelly but I don't think I ever went to a friends party when I was a child that didn't have them.
I still went to parties and managed not to die of hunger/thirst!

Since when has a barbecue been twattish behaviour?
Can't believe all the posters who seem to think a party isn't fun without squash.

TartyMcTart · 29/04/2013 15:03

So, for those of you who only serve up food that your own kids like rather than that which the party guests would like - would you cater for your (adult) guests if you had friends round for dinner? Or would you pick something you like yourself and just serve it up knowing that at least you'll enjoy it?

Nehru · 29/04/2013 15:04

ohserve what you like at a party fgs - but I think it is polite to make an effort to cater for your guests tastes.

ALso OP - what if ALL they say at school is " your party was crap we had stale bread and pond water"

worth bearing in mind

Jewcy · 29/04/2013 15:05

...or a magician who shits his pants 'cos he's so pissed.

Jewcy · 29/04/2013 15:05

...take that, Julia! Grin

likeitorlumpit · 29/04/2013 15:07

dont forget to cancel the bouncy castle and order the yoga mats for the fun and games .

In what way Thurlow? Ehric my DD was 3 and had three 3 year old friends
and cousins between 4 and 9 there. I honestly don't think spag Bol is weird, all children like it! Plus cousins have a fairly long journey so needed a proper meal. I would add that they all had water but have come across as enough of a nutter

Nehru · 29/04/2013 15:09

Blimey guys!

anothermadamebutterfly · 29/04/2013 15:09

I wouldn't care and probably wouldn't even notice.

Jewcy · 29/04/2013 15:10

Grin at likeitorlumpit. I wonder if all the kids will be wearing hi-viz vests to play in the garden..

EhricLovesTeamQhuay · 29/04/2013 15:10

Hahahaha
You had a group of three year olds all eating spag Bol nicely with no mess? Really? Are these magic children?

Nehru · 29/04/2013 15:12

Jewcy...

insanityscratching · 29/04/2013 15:13

My dd only drinks water or milk and doesn't eat sweets, not because she hasn't ever had the chance because she could have them both if she wanted she just doesn't like the taste. At her party though I served squash (and milk and water for those who wanted it) and her party bags had a few sweets in. Dd still didn't drink the squash or eat the sweets but it's not up to me to dictate what others want for their children.

usualsuspect · 29/04/2013 15:15

I would think you were one of the worthy mothers.

Thurlow · 29/04/2013 15:15

Just the name, it looked like a corking NC to me.

I don't think anyone is implying that a party isn't fun without squash. People are saying, as Nehru says best, that it is polite to make an effort to cater for your guests tastes. To me, at a kid's party that is providing as broad a selection (relatively) of food and drink as you can afford to cater for most average tastes and dietary requirements. So BBQ food with some salad, say, is a great choice as most people will eat either burgers, sausages, veggie kebabs, and then a few dessert items like fruit, ice cream/frozen yoghurt, and a birthday cake. Then for drinks that would mean water, fruit juice, milk, something fizzy, and squash.
