AIBU - No sweets or squash

AIBU to not serve squash or give out sweets at a children's party?

Just wondering what parents would think of going to a children's party where there was only water to drink and just birthday cake to take home. For us that would be normal and I wouldn't think anything of it but just wondering if parents would be surprised at not seeing squash or sweets?

Thank you - you have all made me laugh.

Now I have a vision of little kids running in all directions, high on squash and wearing spag bol orange beards....

Jewcy · 29/04/2013 15:17

Yes, Nehru?

HamletsSister · 29/04/2013 15:18

As long as you don't complain when you come to my party where we will ONLY be serving Haribo Tangfastic and Coca Cola. The taps will be disconnected and anyone complaining will be told, in no uncertain terms, that IT IS A PARTY!

notso · 29/04/2013 15:18

Surely Spag Bol is safe child food.
This thread is so typical of the fickleness of AIBU if OP had put AIBU planned a nice BBQ party but one of the guests Mums has told me her DC will only come if I serve Fruit Shoots and Greggs there would be a different outcome.

Not without mess no Ehric - DD has a long way to go before she will hit civilisation at the dinner table. Hence plastic bibs. It would have been much less messy to serve bowls of Wotsits and Haribo, but hey it's a party, it's not all about the adults is it???

Jewcy · 29/04/2013 15:21

Hamlet, can I come to your party, please? I'll bring my smacked-up clown Grin

usualsuspect · 29/04/2013 15:22

I've never been to a kids party in my life where squash, fizzy pop or a few sweets weren't on the menu.

Jewcy · 29/04/2013 15:25

Now THAT'S a fucking party

seriouscakeeater · 29/04/2013 15:25

How very dull! Its a party for gods sake!

Get real fruit juice and cakes, feel sorry for your dcs and the friends that that turn up! how old are they?

Jewcy · 29/04/2013 15:26

I've done a fair few parties for the DCs. I've put plenty of sweets in party bags, but never served any with lunch/tea, wouldn't have crossed my mind. Some of those parties have been bbqs with just cake. In fact, one of the things most popular at the first bbq I did was corn on the cob - I'd only bought a few for the adults. I made sure I had at least one piece per child after that and they've always been eaten.

Can't see the point of just water - as many posters have pointed out, some kids just don't like water and my aim at a party is generally for things to run as smoothly as possible and for everyone to be happy. Kids upset because they're thirsty and 'can't' drink the drink I'd provided would not be my idea of running smoothly. Water isn't the only healthy drink. Having said that, I did a snow tubing party one year. It was very very hot and everyone was absolutely dripping with sweat. I had only brought water for the activity (afterthought, bought on the way) and no one made a murmur!

I think your thread became a bit derailed as it initially read that you were only doing water and cake. Missing out the entire BBQ element in your original post was a bit of an oversight and created a lot of the party one-upmanship comments IMO.

ilovexmastime · 29/04/2013 15:30

I think at the age of 5 you can get away with no sweets, but I think you should serve an alternative to water just in case. One of my DSs will not drink water and if it's a hot July day (ha ha ha ha ha) then the children really need to drink.

Ps. What's so bad about squash (in moderation obviously), I genuinely don't know. ...

Jewcy · 29/04/2013 15:31

Just for JuliaScurr

JuliaScurr · 29/04/2013 15:32

Kirsty would make (by hand) some embroidered bags
in each one she would lovingly place
a Greggs sausage roll and a fruit shoot

likeitorlumpit · 29/04/2013 15:34

heres your clown lol vulcanicnews.com/wp-content/uploads/funnypic/pack05/Clowns_On_Crack.jpg?9d7bd4

HamletsSister · 29/04/2013 15:37

Smacked up clowns welcome. I might offer Irn Bru as an alternative if some of you are fussy about what you drink and, perhaps, ordinary Haribo for those who can't cope with a bit of tang. After all, they have eggs in them (but are they free range....?)

Jewcy · 29/04/2013 15:38

Likeit, I'm howling!

Julia, I reckon Kirsty and most of the worthies on here would do just that and then - after booting the kids out as early as possible - go and sit under the stairs with her hoard of chocolate eclairs, Haribos and gin squash.

Jewcy · 29/04/2013 15:39

Hamlet, I know a magician with anger issues who would actually saw the children in half.

JuliaScurr · 29/04/2013 15:40

plain Haribo of course
what are you, an animal?

yummytummy · 29/04/2013 15:40

you know what, op i personally would be fine with no sweets and water and would applaud you but then thats because i am a dentist so a bit fanatical about treats. and all the ones saying their dc's dont drink water, well if its hot and they are thirsty and thats all there is then of course they will drink it. if there was no squash or other drinks offered to them from the start then water would be no problem. there is a reason why only water or milk are recommended in schools!

likeitorlumpit · 29/04/2013 15:40

my kids just walked in the door and asked what is wrong with me cos im laughing so hard at this thread :)
