AIBU - No sweets or squash

AIBU to not serve squash or give out sweets at a children's party?

Just wondering what parents would think of going to a children's party where there was only water to drink and just birthday cake to take home. For us that would be normal and I wouldn't think anything of it but just wondering if parents would be surprised at not seeing squash or sweets?

Confused. Surely everyone knows what squash is.

CheerfulYank · 02/05/2013 06:58

I'm sure we have something similar but we don't call it squash in the States. :) Squash is a vegetable or a game.

pumpkinsweetie · 02/05/2013 07:00

Let kids be kids and let them live a little!
Water Shock no sweets !!!!- It is one day, their teeth will not fall out overnight and neither will their bellies explode if you allow them treats at a birthday party.
If my dc came to this party, they would wonder where on earth the real party is Grin

Healthy is good, water is good, sweets are bad BUT this is a party!

Sirzy · 02/05/2013 07:00

Juice which you add water to to before you drink it.

Cordial.

CheerfulYank · 02/05/2013 07:02

And no Ribena...I learned about it on a different thread. We don't have anything black currant flavored...anything purple tastes like grape.

CheerfulYank · 02/05/2013 07:04

Wikipedia says we don't have anything really similar to squash. We have powdered drinks like Kool-Aid or Tang, but that's not the same.

We do have "juice drinks" that taste sort of like fruit but aren't really. But you don't add anything to them.

CreatureRetorts · 02/05/2013 07:04

Unclench.

Let them eat sweets, cake and shit.

AnneEyhtMeyer · 02/05/2013 07:32

I'd say Tang is the closest, CheerfulYank. As a child we lived in the Middle East and the shops sold a lot of American stuff for the Westerners and my mum bought Tang as a squash substitute. I can still smell it now, takes me right back! The only real difference is squash is a liquid, but you only put a small amount and dilute it with water - about 1 part squash to 10 parts water.

CheerfulYank · 02/05/2013 07:36

Okay. :)

I haven't had Tang in forever ...my grandma used to have it but it was never in our house. We loved it!

AnneEyhtMeyer · 02/05/2013 07:50

I hadn't thought about it in ages, but I want some now! I think I'll have to hunt it out next time I'm in the US and bring some home!

Grin Jewcy

VikingVagine · 02/05/2013 10:46

In response to your question three pages back Jewcy , I usually do a couple of cakes and offer fruit juice or water, nothing outrageous there. I may have shockingly stretched to a bottle of ice tea one year.

When you go out for an evening do you feel obliged to get very drunk to have a good time? Just curious.

pollywollydoodle · 02/05/2013 11:10

i would wonder if you knit your own shoes

and would be disappointed not to get any sweets to eat on the way home

pollywollydoodle · 02/05/2013 11:13

liking there is a difference between feeling obliged to get drunk and making sure everyone remains sober

pollywollydoodle · 02/05/2013 11:14

viking , i mean

notso · 02/05/2013 11:29

I hardly think children drinking squash is equivalent to adults drinking alchohol!
Water AND squash AND juice are all normal drinks none of them are more exciting than the other ones.
All the people saying it's a party crack open the weak Robinsons are being no different to OP saying only water.

ifitsnotanarse · 02/05/2013 11:39

First proper B-day party I attended with DH's family was for DN then 3. Sweets, lollies, crisps, chocolate, fizzy orange/cola laid out on table for nieces and nephews. When they had finished (and high as a kite on sugar) the table was cleared for the adults who sat down to a roast dinner.

I was Shock & Angry. No proper food for the kids at all during the 6 hours we were there.

This happened at every party until I put a stop to it with family party for DS1. All the kids got proper food as well as treats. Think DH's family thought I was a bit mean and up myself but have to admit that since then they now feed the kids (almost) proper food before the treats appear. Smile

Jewcy · 02/05/2013 11:58

viking, for your information I am teetotal but when I go out I do tend to jump on every cock in sight (I put my squash down first, of course, so as not to spill owt).

Jewcy · 02/05/2013 11:59

Wow, ifitsnotanarse, you must feel like a real trailblazer Hmm

  • Knock, knock..
  • Who's there?
  • It's Annabel. Sorry I'm late for the party but I had to stop off at Ocado so that Magnus has bottled water to drink and dandelion houmous to eat at your working-class party.
  • Fuck off
seriouscakeeater · 02/05/2013 12:09

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha jewcy Grin

Jewcy · 02/05/2013 12:10
  • Knock, knock...
  • Who the fuck is that now?
  • Hi, it's the dentist and I've come to lecture you on the effects of squash on your ill-educated and badly parented children's teeth
iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii · 02/05/2013 12:24

Blimey, some of you are like a dog with a sugar free bone with this thread.

OP has said she was BU and will serve something other than than water. I don't see how she deserves the nasty comments.

notso · 02/05/2013 12:34

I have been nice to OP and to be fair I think she has probably hidden the thread by now.
This thread is most amusing to me.
