DS is 17 months

He goes to nursery twice a week and has started saying 'Hiya' when he sees other people or children

I know it's a not the biggest deal in the world but it makes me a bit itchy and I know he's not picked it up anywhere else

Would mentioning it make me look like a total twunt? I haaaate it :(

Sorry I don't understand the issue.

wonderingsoul · 27/04/2013 15:59

yanbu

but please do report back on what they say Wink

RollerCola · 27/04/2013 15:59

What were you thinking of asking the nursery to do?

VinegarDrinker · 27/04/2013 15:59

Er, yes, YWBBU and very PFB.

TidyDancer · 27/04/2013 15:59

In the nicest possible way, is this serious?

2cats2many · 27/04/2013 15:59

You'll look a total twunt.

Honestly. Don't say anything to them. Just correct him at home.

SauvignonBlanche · 27/04/2013 16:00

Hilarious! Grin

LibertineLover · 27/04/2013 16:00

What's wrong with Hiya? Confused

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 27/04/2013 16:00

He's talking and you want to complain???

Least it's not "ta" :o

MoaningMingeWhingesAgain · 27/04/2013 16:01

I think it's fine to hate it. But a bit too PFB to mention it.

You could try teaching him to say 'Good morning, how do you do?' instead Grin

I am trying to encourage my DCs to not shout PooPooHeadFatFace all day just now.

pinkyredrose · 27/04/2013 16:01

um . . . what?

BabyMakesTheYoniGoStretchy · 27/04/2013 16:01

Most tots say Hiya. It will pass, and yes you will look like a twunt.

VinegarDrinker · 27/04/2013 16:01

I think hiya is meant to be "common" Libertine ... (I only know this from MN)

crazydrunkevilhamster · 27/04/2013 16:02

Hmm Confused

Please have my first & second Biscuit Biscuit

ppeatfruit · 27/04/2013 16:02

What are you going to do when he comes back saying fuck? YABVVU get over it.

doublecakeplease · 27/04/2013 16:02

Haha - you'll look like twunt - but please have a word and report back!! Any other words you hate?? My DS constantly says 'hiya' to people, dogs in the street, the odd bus stop....

BabyMakesTheYoniGoStretchy · 27/04/2013 16:02

Teens around here greet each other with 'Story' so cherish the irritating Hiya.

MrBloomsBloomers · 27/04/2013 16:03

Are you going to police everything anyone says to him for the rest of his life just in case he picks it up? What a twonk.

wonderingsoul · 27/04/2013 16:03

or you could encourage him to do the "hiiiii ya " with jazz hands.

purely for our amusment.

HollyBerryBush · 27/04/2013 16:04

What do you say OP? "Greetings Earthlings" ? Because I'm not entirely sure which planet you're currently orbiting

UniqueAndAmazing · 27/04/2013 16:04

they do.

it's a developmental thing.
it's because they physically can't say the proper words.

same as they say "ta" because they can't say "thank you" - it turns into "tanks" and then into "thank you" - not because you've taught them that, but because that's the way their language control develops.

"hiya" is what DD (16 mo) says whenever someone comes into the shop. I always say "Hello" and DH and I say "hello" all the time. She's trying to say "hello" but her mouth can't form it properly. so it becomes "hiya" until it can.

if you complained to the nursery, they would probably laugh at you.

UniqueAndAmazing · 27/04/2013 16:05

she also said "aaaamm" instead of "amen"

don't worry CG, it'll be fine Grin

MissyMooandherBeaverofSteel · 27/04/2013 16:06

Yes please do complain, I'm sure they will send letters to the other parents stating their child will be excluded for saying 'hiya' to yours.

Grin Grin the ultimate in PFB Grin Grin

catgirl1976 · 27/04/2013 16:07

Ok....I would look like a total twunt and I won't say anything

I'll just correct him at home and wait for him to grow out of it

Thank you for the perspective :)

(PS It's not like I want him to say 'how doyou do?'.....'hello' would be just fine :)

Come on now, settle down folks, the op said she knows it's not the worst thing in the world but she doesn't like it. I'm interested to know how you've been considering mentioning it to the nursery op? Do you think they can nip it in the bud? Wink
