DS is 17 months

He goes to nursery twice a week and has started saying 'Hiya' when he sees other people or children

I know it's a not the biggest deal in the world but it makes me a bit itchy and I know he's not picked it up anywhere else

Would mentioning it make me look like a total twunt? I haaaate it :(

According to Urban Dictionary:

  1. A sound uttered when a heavy tune comes on usually heard in garage raves.
Combine with gunfingers for best results. Listen to 'Gladiator' by Alias. You won't be able to help it.
  1. Brap
Sound made to imitate gunshot. Used say after you've just rinsed someone, or as mentioned earlier, listening to a heavy tune. You're so fat, you're going to die young!! braaap!!
  1. brap
Brap is something you say when your bigging someone/something up. Big up ma m8 shyla! brap!

But I think I must have heard it on TV as I don't know any young people and haven't been to a rave in about 15 years

Ta Wink

Never been to a rave. Or a pop concert for that matter. First concert was actually seeing the Hallé at the Free Trade Hall. I think I was born old. There's no hope for my kids...

My cousin was in the Halle so I went to a lot of those :)

But also lots of raves

Now I just go to the park, and sometimes, for excitement, the shops and the tip Grin

I'm not keen on Hiya my son said it for a little while but grew out of it.

I think Ta is awful though. My MIL insisted on saying it to my son over and over - what is the point- he's not learning to say thank you. I had to get dh to say something to her.

He's 2.8 and says please and thank you now and thankfully never had a stage if 'ta'.

I wouldn't bother saying anything to the nursery over hiya but if they start saying Ta I definitely would.

Try having a child who is developing a brummie accent from nursery. Time to move?! Grin

candyandyoga · 27/04/2013 22:16

Really?! You have a lifetime of him saying words or ways or saying words you won't like! Pfb-ititis or what!

GibberTheMonkey · 27/04/2013 22:22

My ds1 used to say hiya all the time to women and only women (from about 9 mths) Men he ignored. So dh took it upon himself to teach him to say 'how you doin' after it in the style of Joey. Very inappropriate but very amusing .

Notnowcato · 27/04/2013 22:24

Mine all went through the 'Hiya' phase. The second one stuck there for ages because she picked up that I didn't like it Grin. The third is now on 'Hewo'. And I wonder if he'll ever be able to say hello, or lemon, or yellow ?

I thought I was picky, but I think I might say "Hiya" myself Blush. DD's nursery clearly avoids using "Ta", so that hasn't been an issue. DD is developing a local accent from nursery which has been commented on by my family & DH's family and I am hoping will wear off as I don't think it is a pleasant accent. It is lovely when your DC starts using phrases that sound cute from a toddler and you realise that they are things you say.

SolomanDaisy · 28/04/2013 08:55

I think hiya is a universal word, they all seem to say it. We know toddlers with lots of different first languages and they all say hiya to each other!

You could introduce PFB to the finger family. My DS loves it and now says "how do you do?" as well as "hiya".

Would you not just be happy he's communicating and happy? Really don't get this!

CouthySaysEatChoccyEggs · 28/04/2013 09:43

Groovee - tbh, my DS1 was praised for having impeccable manners at 7. Now he's 11, it's like he's forgotten how to use them. I know he knows, so I think that is just a developmental stage he's going through!

CouthySaysEatChoccyEggs · 28/04/2013 09:45

My 2yo with a speech delay can say "cheeez" and "Ta-ooo" for please and thank you. He can't tell you he needs his nappy changed mind you, or what he wants to eat, or if he wants a drink...Confused
