DS is 17 months

He goes to nursery twice a week and has started saying 'Hiya' when he sees other people or children

I know it's a not the biggest deal in the world but it makes me a bit itchy and I know he's not picked it up anywhere else

Would mentioning it make me look like a total twunt? I haaaate it :(

"Hiya" doesn't need corrected. It is a normal word for your son to be saying, it is easier than "Hello" and plenty of adults say it anyway If you are terribly worried that you will be stuck with a frightfully common child don't be. If "Hello" is used in your house that's what he will end up saying by copying you.

I can't believe that your little boy is just learning to speak, greeting people in the park and you are saying "No...". Great way to encourage him to communicate!

harryhausen · 27/04/2013 16:31

Oh, pleeeease mention it. Then tell us what they say. Please?

Still18atheart · 27/04/2013 16:32

What's the problem with hiya?? I can understand it's slang but I don't see the issue

chattychattyboomba · 27/04/2013 16:36

Whenever someone leave a room DD says 'see you tomowoh!!' Which is not only wrong phonetically but factually incorrect so she can't have picked it up from anywhere but nursery... Should i report it? Grin LOL!

malteserzz · 27/04/2013 16:36

I say hiya myself sometimes ! And ta ! I must be very common Grin

LibertineLover · 27/04/2013 16:37

I'm extraordinarily common by MN batshit standards

fragola · 27/04/2013 16:54

When ds1 was two he went through a phase of saying "heeyyy, pretty laydeee" when he saw a woman. Now that was embarrassing. And I have no idea where he got it from!

Happiestinwellybobs · 27/04/2013 17:00

My nursery call my DD an abbreviated version of her name. No one else shortens it. It grates on me, but I would be too embarrassed to say anything.

UniqueAndAmazing · 27/04/2013 17:06

no, that's not a PFB.
that's just bloody annoying and wrong.
You can't just take it upon yourself to call a child something else than their name.

nicknames are for peers, not teachers/nursery leaders

crashdoll · 27/04/2013 17:16

"When ds1 was two he went through a phase of saying "heeyyy, pretty laydeee" when he saw a woman. Now that was embarrassing. And I have no idea where he got it from!"

Grin That's hilarious!

Exhaustipated · 27/04/2013 17:20

Hiya,

YABU! But I see you realise that now :)

See ya...

catgirl1976 · 27/04/2013 17:23

Loving *heeeeeeey, pretty laydee'

:)

He communicates fine, he's got about 60 words at the moment, so I'm not worried that I will stunt his speech by saying 'hello' firmly when he says 'hiya' you'll lynch me if I tell you I've got a spreadsheet won't you

But I have accepted I am being U to make this an issue. I will just dislike it silently :)

It's a lot easier to say than 'good morning, it's a pleasure to make your acquaintance'. You're being a bit daft. Grip... a... get... to... need... you. Sorry. Wine?

DeskPlanner · 27/04/2013 17:56

Confused Biscuit

NishiNoUsagi · 27/04/2013 17:58

If it helps, I could lend you my charming ds2 (nearly 2) who has started responding to questions with a very loud and shocked sounding "HUH?!", somewhat as if you've just told him a unicorn has eaten his pants. At least it would make "hiya!" sound a bit less common Grin

MrBloomsBloomers · 27/04/2013 17:59

Aw, this is one of those threads where people just read the OP and don't realise that a YABU has been accepted and keep being mean :( stop being lazy people!

DinoSnores · 27/04/2013 18:05

I don't like 'Ta' either and DS has said thank you the whole time. I don't think it is anything to do with development as someone suggested.

TiggyD · 27/04/2013 18:39

He's ruined. Sell him for parts and move on.

gobbledegook1 · 27/04/2013 18:40

My DS has started saying 'thanks' which I assume he picked up at nursery and it irritates the life out of me too, I just correct him at home that its 'thank you'.

SuePurblybilt · 27/04/2013 18:44

Arf at Tiggy. Double arf at Jazz Hands. Could you also train him to do when saying it?

I'm with you. I would did have issues with 'ta'.

catgirl1976 · 27/04/2013 18:44

But who will buy him even for parts he's tainted

Grin

Send him back and ask for a refund, catgirl.

missmapp · 27/04/2013 18:46

Both my boys have recently started dropping their t's in words e.g lille for little - it drives me mad- I keep correcting them ...... and then comes the terrifying realisation

I HAVE BECOME MY MOTHER!!!!!!!

catgirl1976 · 27/04/2013 18:48

He might go for showbiz fingers

He has some astoundingly flamboyant and camp actions so it should be right up his street

OP posts:
ItsYoniYappy · 27/04/2013 18:48

Aww this has brought back memories of DS1 he would say

Tank ooo for thank you.

DS2 used to say 'hiya' to everyone, I wouldn't mind but they feel compelled to talk back, it took forever to get anywhere with DS2.

He would get progressively louder until people answered him.

Hiya, HiYA, HIYA

It was when a neighbour passed and he said :

OOO wook at that man

It was a woman....... [cringe]
