To not understand why people pay for sky?

CanAnybodyMakeSenseofThis · 26/04/2013 22:20

Due to technical issues, I'm running my tv through an old sky box I found in the loft. I don't have a subscription so can't watch any of the sky channels. However, I can see the listings.

It's so much poo it's unbelievable. Why do people pay for this?? Are they mad?

My Sky+ box is the best gadget I own and I am a gadget queen!

£20 ish pounds a month and worth every penny imo, if only for Nick Jr that came in very handy when DD4 was ill as it shows Peppa Pig/Ben and Holly around the clock!

LadyIsabellaWrotham · 27/04/2013 21:04

We have a PVR which does all the stuff a Sky+ box does. Quest (Mythbusters), BBC4 (everything), BBC2 (docos, GBBO, GBSB, QI, University Challenge), BBC1 (Mastermind, HIGNFY, Pointless, Formula 1, Strictly, Homeland), CBBC (everything), E4 (Big Bang Theory) and ITV4 (classic Marple / Poirot) offer more than enough telly to fill our time even without the big "event" shows.

Every now and then there is a US drama on Sky which I really want to watch. House was one, now Game of Thrones. I buy them on DVD for 30 quid a year, because I refuse to stream pirates versions. Being one year behind the spoilers for GOT is going to drive me mad, but not enough to give 600 quid to Rupert Murdoch.

Have got rid of my sky subscription; still have the dish so will be getting a freesat plus box.

Selks · 27/04/2013 21:20

Just googled PVR box, could not make head nor tail of what it actually is.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 27/04/2013 21:24

Personal video recorder, so Sky+ or equivalent.

littletingoddess · 27/04/2013 21:38

I like Sky for Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire and True Blood. DH likes sport. Lots of sport.

Arisbottle · 27/04/2013 21:40

I pay for sky, I am very common , the kind of woman most MNers would avoid and love trash .

LadyIsabellaWrotham · 27/04/2013 21:48

But surely there's loads of trash on the non-sky channels arisbottle? ITV2, Channel 5, 5*, Pick TV, More 4 and Really must offer far more junk TV than there are hours in the day? Or do you have very specialist tastes?

Genuine question - I like a bit of trashy telly myself, but I've never felt the need to pay extra for it, because apart from anything else, it doesn't really matter if the episode of Freaky Eaters you're watching is brand new or a three year old repeat - you're not going to miss the plot.

LippiPongstocking · 27/04/2013 21:54

We have a Humax which has Freeview (in essence like a Sky+ box, pauses and records etc) and we have a Roku to watch Netflix, IPlayer etc but our main telly is a SmartTV, and also has Youtube, 4Od, Lovefilm etc built in. We haven't missed having Sky in years!

Arisbottle · 27/04/2013 21:55

If you are especially trashy and common like me , I guess you are willing to pay extra to get more poor taste TV.

trianglesaregood · 27/04/2013 22:08

Sport and sky+. keeps the whole family happy.

Moonstorm · 27/04/2013 22:30

Those people without Sky. What do you do for broadband and line rental/ phone calls? It's this on top of the TV hat makes it worthwhile for us.

Bunbaker · 27/04/2013 23:35

Our telephone, line rental and Broadband come to £25 a month from Utility Warehouse. We also get our gas and electricity from them, but because we have solar panels our FIT payback means that our monthly utility bills are vastly reduced.

Moonstorm · 28/04/2013 20:59

I've never heard of Utility Warehouse. Are they a national company?

Bunbaker · 28/04/2013 21:47

Utility Warehouse are always in the Which top 3 recommended energy suppliers. We have been with them for about 4 years and are really pleased that we switched to them.

Sallyingforth · 28/04/2013 23:20

Nothing wrong with BT's phone and broadband service. Sky only sub-let BT's service anyway.

Nehru · 28/04/2013 23:21

madmen

sweetestcup · 29/04/2013 07:22

Would never go back to BT - good when it worked but the minute we had a problem it was a nightmare. Lets just say it took 6 months to sort out and we had the worst customer service we have ever had thanks to the Indian call centres for broadband refusing to accept we had a problem, cancelling engineers when they were finally booked etc etc. On the plus side we got £500 compensation it was that bad, but I would never go back! At least Skys customer service is better.

Goldenhandshake · 29/04/2013 10:31

For the fact I can record the programmes and watch them later on, currently watching/recording:

Game of Thrones
The Following
Once upon a time

DH loves it for the sport, and DD loves the Sky Disney movies channel, plus Nickelodeon.

valiumredhead · 29/04/2013 10:36

Sky Atlantic is FAB.

Sparklingbrook · 29/04/2013 10:37

LeaveTheBarSteward · 29/04/2013 10:53

I pay £24 per month for the basic package, no sports or movies. Think I'm paying too much, need to give them a ring.
I love it though, have freeview in the kitchen and its crap compared to sky+

VitoCorleone · 29/04/2013 11:28

I had freeview for years, dont know how i ever coped without Sky.

I wouldnt give up my Sky+ for anything now

cuteboots · 29/04/2013 12:13

I have the tv/phone and broadband package from Sky and think its a bit expensive . American shizzle really so I think it may be the next thing to go in my house. I only have the basic package but £75 a month is a bit steep I feel
